Rating: Summary: Susan Elizabeth Phillips is back in top form Review: I've never disliked a SEP book but I thought the last effort, First Lady, was a bit flat. Well, SEP has returned to the Chicago Stars and this may be one of her best. I devoured this book even as I wiped away tears (of tenderness and laughter). In Molly, SEP has created an incredibly likeable heroine. Molly is a great mixture of spunk and wild imagination with a fragile interior. Kevin is a complicated jock who is still dealing with childhood baggage. Other authors try to write this combination into their characters, but SEP really makes it work in this book. I loved Molly's imaginary world with Daphne the high fashion bunny and Benny, the wild badger. Even the real world secondary characters are colorful without being unreal. The plot is probably only a four star effort as it's a bit contrived. Still, I liked Molly and Kevin so much that I stayed up way past my usual bedtime just to find out how they were going to straighten out their complicated romance. And for all those romance publishers who say the jocks can't be heroes, if this is an example of just how good a romance about athletes can be, then I can only hope that more publishers will get on the bandwagon.
Rating: Summary: This Heart of Mine has love, laughter and tears.... Review: I loved this book. Within the first few chapters I was laughing out loud and there were a few tears as well. SEP is a master at mixing the funny-stuff in with heart tugging moments. I liked the way she wove bits of Molly's 'writing' into the story--very clever. This book is exactly what a romance should be. It is a keeper along with all of Ms. Phillips work.
Rating: Summary: Ms. Phillips delivers again Review: After reading all of the football series books (just recently finished the first by backtracking) I was happy to find Molly and Kevin's story in hardback. SEP had me hooked! A must read for all SEP fans.
Rating: Summary: Ahhh!!! Review: I just love a happy ending! And this is definitely a keeper in the Chicago Stars series. I rarely buy hardbacks as I can't afford to do so very often. But I did buy this one. Then didn't read it for a month! Not because I didn't want to but because I wanted to prolong my association with these people. LOL I know that does't make sense at all. But I read "Heart of Mine" this past week and fell in love all over again. So nice to re-visit some old friends of other books. And I always did have a soft spot for Kevin Tucker who was in "Nobody's Baby But Mine". My favorite in the series. Followed by "Heaven, Texas". But this one is definitely up there. I loved how Molly has evolved from the angry teenager she was when she first came to Phoebe. And Kevin is heartbreaking in his search for something to fill the void in his soul. They are so great together. I wish them a long and happy life together. Buying an SES book is a no-brainer. You are getting top quality writing and story telling. Thanks, Susan, for sharing your talent with us lesser mortals.
Rating: Summary: Audiobook is an excellent abridgment of a wonderful story Review: After complaining bitterly about novels being condensed into one or two measly casette tapes, I was thrilled with This Heart of Mine. I read the hardback edition first, then listened to the abridged audio book and did not feel cheated on story. In fact, the only misstep by the narrator was her Ricky Ricardo impression when Kevin was demanding an explanation from Molly. Heaven Texas is my favorite SEP book, but all of them I've read have been great.
Rating: Summary: Classic Susan Elizabeth Phillips! Review: Susan Elizabeth Phillips has got to be one of my all time favorite authors. Her unique combination of belly laughs and tears has earned her many fans and her newest book, _This Heart of Mine_ is just as fabulous as her previous books. It definitely has some parts that are harder core and it is not as sugar coated as some of her earlier books. But, _This Heart of Mine_ is definitely heartfelt, well written, and thoroughly engrossing. The characters jump off the page and right into your heart. The plot moves right along and never stays in one place too long. SEP's writing is still as fresh and funny as it's always been. One addition to her book that I really enjoyed was the clips of Molly's writing stuck in at the begining of each chapter. The last book in SEP's famous Stars' football series (_It Had To Be You_, _Heaven, Texas_, _Nobody's Baby But Mine_, and _Dream a Little Dream_), _This Heart of Mine_ ties everything up quite nicely. There are a couple lovely scenes with old characters from the other books that feel like visiting old friends. _This Heart of Mine_ is a great book for old fans and it will definitely earn her some new ones.
Rating: Summary: Love, laughter and fun! This is a goodie! Review: I'm almost ashamed to admit that this is the first Susan Elizabeth Phillips book that I have read, but I can guarantee you that it won't be the last! I found myself laughing out loud while reading this delightful story, and was sorry to see it end. Phillips truly proves why she is known as the Queen of Romantic Comedy with This Heart Of Mine. Can't wait to see what she has in store next! This is a great springtime or summertime read!
Rating: Summary: Nobody does it better Review: Nobody does it better in writing a romance. Author Susan Elizabeth Phillips is the best that there is in her genre. Predictably, THIS HEART OF MINE is a sweet and engaging novel, grabbing its readers and holding their attention all the way to the book's inevitably happy ending. One charming distinction of this novel is that author Phillips opens many chapters with quotes from the children's books that her heroine supposedly writes. These characters, Daphne-the-rabbit and Benny-the-badger, are altogether endearing inventions. Susan Elizabeth Phillips cannot write a bad story. THIS HEART OF MINE will delight her existing fans and earn her new ones.
Rating: Summary: More of the SEP formula...but it still works Review: Ever since reading "Nobody's Baby But Mine" SEP has been on the top of my list of romance authors (with Lorraine Heath and Stephanie Mittman). Her books are funny and tender and always endearing. I have yet to not enjoy one. What you should know, however, is that with rare exception SEP tells the same story over and over. Luckily, though, it is a good one. I am not sure how much more milage she can get out of it, however. For the first 100 pages or so of this book I thought she was retelling the plot of an earlier, and connected, novel...until it the story thankfully took a twist. Still though, in her string of "short" novels since "It Had to Be You" her male characters have been virtually the same person (except in Dream... and, maybe, Kiss an Angel). In this book I kept substituting the name Kenny in my mind for Kevin (who is no longer the really the same character from before; he's been molded to fit the type of hero SEP writes about). Confusing the two is an honest mistake. There is no discernable difference between them. The women at least have different like and dislikes, but they are strikingly similar, too. I would love to see SEP go out on a limb and write about some different peronality types for her next book. I know she can, as her secondary characters and "long" earlier novels have shown. "This Heart of Mine" is a good romantic read. Funny, sweet, and very predictable. SEP's novels are actually less formulaic than some (Julie Garwood, anyone???)but I think I expect more from her. I have seen what she can write. It is worth buying, to return to your favorite scenes, but perhaps not in hardback. It would be worth waiting a few months.
Rating: Summary: A FANTASTIC book... Review: I had just finished reading It Had To Be You - my first experience with Susan Elizabeth Phillips...and I immediately ran out to find another book and here was a sequel to the story I had fallen in love with. I thought This Heart of Mine was fantastic. I loved Molly - her emotions, her mischieviousness, her restlessness - all of it. I thought her personality was well defined and portrayed, and she was someone you could identify with and love. Kevin - he was just the stuff heroes are made of. Tough but with a soft center...someone you could imagine yourself falling in love with. I loved this book. After this book, I am a fan for life.
