Rating: Summary: Wonderful story Review: I wish someone had shown me this book when I was child. I found it to be a wonderful fairy tale type story. A nice change of pace to read about a "good" orphanage, as well as a happy ending.
Rating: Summary: A book for younger kids Review: This book is a great book for younger kids. I have leaned alot from that book. Mandy is an orphan at a orphanage in London. She has not seen her parents for the last 10 years. Eventually, she is adopted by a loving family with a brother.
Rating: Summary: Every little girls dream Review: I could so easily put myself in this story. I think every girl has longed for a place to call their own and Mandy is no exception. She does push the limits, but her longing is stonger than her guilt. It is a sweet and sometimes predictable story that makes the reader feel good. I t is also age appropriate with lessons to be learned about what can happen with hard work and determination.
Rating: Summary: Enchanting story for children of all ages Review: I first read "Mandy" when I was about nine years old, and absolutely loved it. Mandy is a strong, intelligent, courageous ten-year old girl who lives in an orphanage. More than anything else, she craves something or someone to love and take care of. One day, she is out for a walk, and discovers an abandoned cottage. I loved reading about her long hours restoring the cottage, her life at the orphanage, and her other adventures; and admired her strength, determination and perserverance. Julie Andrews Edwards demonstrates she is a gifted a writer as she is an actor and singer: I only wish she had written more books like this!
Rating: Summary: Great Childhood Memories! Review: I first read this book when I was 12. I found it at school during after school daycare. So I sat down and read. Wow! This book was perfect for me! I had quite the imagination! I used to draw pictures of Mandy and her adventures and even add me in there sometimes! I returned the book and never saw it again but I NEVER forgot it. To this day I have searched libraries and never found it. I'm so glad I finally found it! I'm going to order it and read it again, at the age of 22, then save it for my kids!
Rating: Summary: The Best Book Yet Review: This was a great book about Mandy an orphan who finds a cottage on the other side of the orphanage wall. She keeps it a secret but she has had some mysterious things coming to her but she didn't know where or from whom. Then one day Mandy gets very sick in the cottage while it was storming, but her special friend who gave her the special things she saved her life. It has a very happy ending(read and find out). i am sure you will love this book and it is very adventurous so i would advise you to read it if this is interesting!
Rating: Summary: A book 'girls' of all ages should read! Review: The book MANDY was bought for me by my aunt when I about 9 or so. I owned it for a few months before I was able to actually sit down and read it, and when I was done I was thrilled with the satisfying feeling that my time had not been wasted. This book is one that I think all females can relate to, no matter their age, and is a great example of a book from childhood, that will never leave you. MANDY is a story of an orphan who dreams of something that she can call her own living a world where everything is shared. There is a wall in the back of the orphanage where Mandy lives, and she wonders about the tremdous possibilities of what could be beyond everything she has ever really known in her short life. But the real question is does she ever get over the wall, and end up with all that she has ever wanted, and more? Read the book, and you will find out, and I promise you will not be disapointed!
Rating: Summary: Charming Review: Here's a beautiful book for the escapist in us all. No, I'm notbashing the book -- I'm an admitted escapist, and when I can't get tothe woods somewhere or another hidden corner of the world, I love to wander into a book and travel with characters such as Mandy -- who, like us all, does eventually return to reality. However, children (and adults who haven't forgotten how to return to simplicity and purity for a while) will enjoy escaping into this book over and over again.
Rating: Summary: A great book for all ages Review: An orphan girl goes through adventure. To her secret hideout shereally wants parents. This is a great book for all ages toenjoy!Anybody who likes to have an imagination should read this book!
Rating: Summary: Insipid and insignificant Review: I apologise to all the sugar-addicts out there, but this is more than just a spoonful - it the whole darn sugar canister is one lump sum. Andrews-Edwards' writing style is stilted, unnatural, and boring. The plot is almost non-existant and ridiculously predictable. There are no issues explored or presented in this book. There are so many wonderful children's authors out there - Jerry Spinelli, Kathryn Zeatley Snyder, Sharon Creech, Gary Paulsen, Lois Lowry, David Almond, Louis Sachar, and many, many others. Mandy is nothing more than airy cotton candy for the reader. Let's give our children more nutritious reading matter than this.
