Rating: Summary: The best Dirk Pitt I've read so far Review: The best by far. I've previously read Vixen 03, Iceberg, and Shock Wave. But Sahara is the best. Cussler has done a great job tying together three seemingly obscure story lines. For some reason I didn't think the villian (General Kazim) or the love interest (Eva Rojas) were necessarily the best, but it was the plot and all the hidden gems along the way that make this a great read.
Rating: Summary: Stupid beyond belief. Review: This was my first (and last)Clive Cussler book. The book started with highly improbable scenarios that almost made me quit reading before the prologs were done. The bad guys were really bad; the good guys were too good to be true, endowed with super human strength, pearly white teeth and breath that never stinks. The inevitable love story culminated in the most unlikely setting. Every scene in the book was painfully predictable, with trite segues and just in the nick of time rescues. Perhaps the most irritating feature of Mr. Cussler's writing were the insipid dialogs where life long partners would explain everything to each other - including metric to standard conversions for distances and weights - all while not having had a drink of water in days. If I wasn't stuck on an airplane, I wouldn't have read more than the first five pages.
Rating: Summary: Horrid Choice At The Airport Review: I had read, years ago, many of the earlier "Dirk Pitt" adventure stories, and while they were certainly not Thomas Pynchon, they WERE entertaining reads. Growing up in Ottawa, Canada, the notion of Cussler's "United States of Canada" was eminently entertaining, albeit rather politically incorrect, especially as I sat a couple blocks away from the seat of the Canadian government!I picked up Sahara at an airport as "waiting-for-planes" material; I _hope_ this was written by a ghostwriter, and not proof-read by anyone. While the "traditional" Dirk Pitt novels provided somewhat caricaturic adventure, Sahara read as a VERY BAD caricature of "Dirk Pitt." (What's with the "Dirk Pitt(tm)" everywhere???) The older books had some entertaining "What if?" scenarios (including "What if the US had bought title to Canada?"); this one was more like an action-adventure parody of Space Opera. The E.E. "Doc" Smith "Space Opera" was entertaining, and, at the time, NEW. Sahara has lots of "formula," but is too much of a parody... Run away. Very, very fast...
Rating: Summary: A wonderful book full of action Review: I thoroughly enjoyed "Sahara". It was the first Clive Cussler novel I have read and I'm certainly coming back for more. The reason I liked it is because of it's full-blown action - how it is very hard to put down and how it has a suave yet clever hero, Dirk Pitt. It was interesting to me how Cussler could tie together those three events - President Lincoln assasination, a pilot that dissapeared over the desert, and a deadly amount of red tide that could threaten the world's oxygen supply - that gave me more respect for the story. And, though it was not or does not carry much of a message, I would reccomend it to action-loving readers who enjoy a grand adventure and story like I do.
Rating: Summary: Can anything be so bad? Review: What a waste of time. Cussler's Dirk Pitt is the most ridiculous character ever.
Rating: Summary: Another Fine Mess Review: Again Pitt and his NUMA buddies must act quickly to save the world. So far, I enjoyed this book over the others. Cussler does a wonderful job with his research and is outstanding in his ability to put it into a fictional setting. His writting style reminds me of Franklyn W. Dixon, the author of the famed Hardy Boys. It flows well and keeps you on the edge of your seat. It does seem that Pitt ends up facing the same calibre of baddies and only their names change. This is the reason for the four stars instead of the five. I am particularly amused with the white haired gentleman with the craggy, smiling face that always seems to appear when Pitt is out of clues or ideas. I know I've seen him before, though I can never remember this guy's name . . .
Rating: Summary: Strongly recommended Review: Great book if you want to spend a night full of excitement. It is hard to give a break to reading. The delicately planned political issues and the fast-running adventure takes you away...
Rating: Summary: audio massacre Review: This is a classic Dirk Pitt action novel, but, the audio version is so heavily abridged that large parts of the plot are missing. Stick with the print.
Rating: Summary: Cussler strikes gold again Review: of the five dirk pitt adventures i have read, sahara is without a doubt the best. the constant flow of action and intriguing plot line had me reading this book into the late hours of the night. although i was totally not into how the story ended, from beginning to finish this book had me on edge. the characters were well developed, the villians had the necessary quantities and if you're a clive cussler fan, this is one book you wont want to miss!
Rating: Summary: Atlantis Found Review: Atlantis Found is Clive's best work to date. It is well written as are all his works. His characters are well thought out and well put together. I did not want to put it down. He has a way of taking you right to the scene. You can see the imagery as you read through the book. By taking you back and forth to the different events that bring the story together is a masterful way of story-telling. I have read all of his works and I think Atlantis Found is a must read for any adventure seeking person. If you like to become one with the story, all you have to do is to pick up a Clive Cussler novel. You will not be disappointed...I never have been in any of his stories...
