Summary: Full of fabrication
Review: Iris Chang wrote, 'On November 19, ------, a Japanese advance guard marched through the gates of Suchow, -------. Once inside, the Japanese murdered and plundered the city for days, burning down ancient landmarks and abducting thousands of Chinese women for sexual slavery. The invasion, according to the China Weekly Review, caused the population of the city to drop from 350,000 to less than 500.'(p.38 of "The Rape of Nanking")

People who read this description surely think that Japanese military troops murdered and/or raped almost all 350,000 citizens of Suchow. But the explanation in "The Study of 'The Rape of Nanking'" by Mr. Fujioka and Mr. Higasinakano is absolutely different. When Japanese troops captured Suchow in November 20, only 500 citizens remained. Almost all citizens of Suchow had already run away. And the reason why citizens of Suchow had run away is because Chiang Kai-shek and Ou Tyou-mei had had declared, on July 31 in 1937, to carry out 'Kenpeki Seiya Sakusen(Japanese pronunciation)'. It is a Chinese traditional tactics. It means that retreating Chinese troops burn down everything and kill all living things including human beings so that Japanese troops cannot ever get anything. Are Mr. Fujioka and Mr. Higashinakano liars? If not, Iris Chang is a liar and readers are deceived by her.

Iris Chang quoted a paragraph from MaCallum'diary. MaCallum wrote in Jan.9 1938. "They(Japanese) threaten and intimidate the poor Chinese into repudiating what we have said....Some of the Chinese are even ready to prove that the looting, raping and burning was done by the Chinese and not Japanese.----." (p.151 of "The Rape of Nanking")

I am thinking that these Chinese might be saying the truth. According to "The Study of 'The Rape of Nanking'" by Mr Fujioka and Mr Higashinanano, "New York Times Jan. 4 1938" seems to carry an article which says Chinese ex-soldiers(a colonel and his men) confessed that they plundered and raped, and faked crimes of Japanese soldiers. And also in "China Press Jan. 25 1938", which was published in Shanghai by Americans, there seems to be an article about "the activity" of Chinese ex-soldiers in Safty Zone. I am not unwiling to admit that Rabe was a good man, but, frankly speaking, I doubt whether what Rabe, who didn't speak Chinese, heard and believed were true. Whether or not they really happened? Whether or not they were really done by Japanese soldiers? Rabe wrote that Japanese soldiers appeared with Mausers in their hands. But, according to Mr. Fijioka and Mr. Higashinakano, in reality, Japanese soldiers didn't have Mausers, and yet, Chinese soldiers and policemen had Mausers those days. And also Rabe wrote in a letter "Futzu Miao are completely burned and plundered down."(There is similar description in his diary, as well). But, according to Mr. Akira Suzuki(the auther of "Shin Nankingdaigyakusatu no Maboroshi"), Futzu Miao were, in reality, neither burned down nor plundered down. Rabe must have heard it from someone, and it was wrong. I think Rabe might be used, without knowing it, by Chiang Kai-shek for his strategy to arouse world sympathy toward China. These are my doubts.

In Iris Chang's "The Rape of Nanking", there is a photograph of nearly ten Chinese women and a few Chinese boys and two Japanese soldiers walking on a brigde. The caption which Iris Chang gave to this photo is "As the Japanese moved across China, they rounded up thousands of women. Many of them were gang raped or forced into military prostitution (Politburo of Military Committee, Taipei)". But, according to "The Study of 'The Rape of Nanking'" by Mr Fujioka and Mr Higashinakano, this photo first appeared in a Japanese photo weekly "Asahi Gurafu, Nov.10 1937" as one of a set of four photos taken by a correspondent of "The Asahi", Mr Kumasaki. The man who found this fact first is Mr Ikuhiko Hata. The original is a large photo, and you can see a girl and a boy are smiling. The original caption is "A group of women and children returning from farm work protected by our soldiers". The reason why the villagers must have been protected by Japanese soldiers is because it was quite common for Chinese soldiers those days to loot, rape, set fire and kill. In the other three photos, you can see villagers picking cotton, villagers selecting cotton and a family standing with Japanese soldiers. Probably most people living out of Japan still don't know these facts. So I write this. Here again, Iris Chang and Penguin Books have been deceiving readers.

Summary: Not for all
Review: The book 'Tara Road', was an enjoyable book, but somewhatdrawn out. It's a tale of a woman's life, Ria, her happy timesand hard times. Ria and her husband Danny, go from growing up poor to living in a mansion, on Tara Road. Ria's friends, Rosemary, who isn't at all what she seems, her friend Gertei who is married to a drunk, and many others whom she encounters in her life. It's about her life, her everyday life. Having children, trying to raise them right. It talks not only for her life, but the problems of her friends and family around her. She lives a fairy tale life; she seems to have everything and anything she could ever want. Many people envied her. Yet her 'perfect' life comes crashing down around her when she finds out her husband is leaving her! For a while she doesn't believe it! But she sorts herself out when she switches houses with a random person. The book, I liked, I enjoyed reading it. But it was very drawn out; it seemed to take forever to get to the end of the book. Then when you finally got to the end of the book it ended really abruptly! It left you hanging. You get used to reading all the detail then the book suddenly ends! But the book was very down to earth. It was mostly realistic. I like the way the characters were introduced into the story. They were slowly introduced, not all in the beginning they're for you to figure out who they are. I enjoyed many of the characters, especially Annie. She being more my age, seemed faced with many of the same problems in life. The book was easy to read, but it didn't really flow, it kept jumping for character to character, and scene to scene. But it was a calm tone; definitely not an action packed book. The book was informing, it not only told a story but let you in on a culture of a different country. It told about Ireland, yet it was compared to the US when Ria and Marylin talked about each other's homes and lives they left behind. It showed that many of the things are the same in both countries. Everyone has their family problems, and just problems that come with life. In this book though it centers on two problems, the one in Rias life and the one in Maylins life. Ria trying to deal with divorce and Marylin, trying to face her secret. It explains many of the emotions that we feel, when going through a hardship. It shows a way of dealing problems, to find a friend. You can learn a lot from this book. Such as some people are not what they seem, and like animals I think you can never fully trust anyone. Yet there is probably someone out there for everyone, which you can fully confide in. But as this book shows you can't be to quick to judge people you think you know.

Summary: Not for the weak of heart.
Review: "The Forgotten Halocaust" is an extremely appropriate subtitle for this book, and I am shocked that I had never heard of these events before picking up this book. Even moreso because there are so many books written, both fiction and nonfiction, about the Jewish Halocaust, and I have never so much as heard a word about the Japanese invasion of China. Indeed, few people know of Japan's role previous to the bombing of Pearl Harbor despite the influence that it held over China. It is frightening to contemplate the nature of man which leads him to both commit the crime and deny its occurrence. Iris Chang has taken a bold step towards finding the truth, and the importance of her work can not be overstated.

I found this book to be a well-researched work that should be read by anyone who seeks to know the truth about what happened during WWII. It is well-written and neatly structured, and I appreciated her use of various viewpoints to give the reader a more well-rounded and accurate view of events. Her explicit descriptions of the atrocities that took place highlight the need for this story to be told.

I urge anyone who has never heard of the Rape of Nanking to read this book, if only that it may not be forgotten. Although I especially connected to Chang's message due to my Chinese heritage, I feel that her book has more long-reaching implications about the very nature of man when subjected to a certain type of environment. It is an important work which will hopefully pave the way for future research and inquiry into what took place in China during WWII.

Summary: very disturbing
Review: I didn't know anything about the massacre in Nanking before reading this book. And I think that's a shame. So many people have died for nothing, and the only way to give some reason to their death is to not forget their fate.

The approach on Iris Chang to this topic is great: She uses three different perspectives when writing about the massacre, a Japanese one, a Chinese one and an international one.

Above all, I found this great book very disturbing. The first book that made me cry during reading. Serveral times. Not because it is emotional. Because of the facts.

Summary: The truth about WW2 in Asia
Review: I really thought this book was very informative. It really shocked me to see how cruel the Japanese were towards the Chinese during WW2. The graphic descriptions on how the Japanese killed and tortured the Chinese people really came alive in my imagination. The stories of the people from American and European countries helping out the Chinese despite the danger really fascinated me. As a Chinese, I was really appalled to what happened, but I don't hate the Japanese, not at all. This is what can happen if we exalt a leader of a nation as a god like Japan did with their emperor (name? ). Hitler wasn't the only evil during WW2, The Rape of Nanking shows us the other evil of the war. This book is recommended to those interested in facts about WW2.

Summary: Iris Chang Errors
Review: The rape of Nanking was a horrible thing. However, I saw Chang on TV saying that the Japanese killed 20 million Chinese during the war. What she is talking about is the killing between Chinese Nationalist forces and the Communists under Mao. The Long March by the Communist forces was not about tea parties throughout China. Chang has to do more research about China in the 40s. And dear God, what about the Rape of Tibet? Tibet is about as Chinese as France is. Will China pay reparations and allow Tibetans to be Tibetans?

Summary: Horrible and shocking but important
Review: Every time I pick this book up I put it down shaking. It's hard to believe that human beings are capable of doing what the Japanese did in Nanking. The story is made more real by pictures, lots of them and no punches are pulled. Mass murder, gang rapes, using live POWs for bayonet practice and a host of other attrocities were committed by the invaders during WWII. Not suprisingly, many people don't know or haven't even heard of Nanking. That's why books like this are so important. We cannot forget what happened.

Summary: Must Read...
Review: First off, Chang depicts the forgotten battles of WWII incredibly vivid and frank. Very few books have made me stop reading for a moment out of sheer emotion; this is one, however. What makes the happenings of Nanking so horrible is that Japan has never admitted any wrong doing, even to this day. I have been living in Japan for the past year and can say that only one person I have come across knows the truth about the rape. Let us not hold a heavy thumb on Japan...everyone has their atrocities...The United States and slavery as well as atrocities in Viet Nam committed by US soldiers, China and millions starved because of Mao and his "agricultural advances," Stalin and the 20,000,000 plus starved and murdered fellow countrymen, the Nazi regime, Pol Pot and Cambodia. The list goes on and on. The difference is, of all the examples, Iris Chang examines in detail how easily such a massacre has been forgotten. Of the above examples, they were either 1) not governmentally implemented, or 2) the countries have admitted and apologized for their faults (with the possible exception of the Khmer Rouge). Iris Chang...thanks for such an informative and important read.

Summary: Never Reborn in Hell
Review: The content of this book is very respectable. In fact, the reality of the Nanking Holocaust was more brutal and diabolic than the crafty lies that the Japanese emperor complex is trying to make up, and now the press tends to blind the majority of Japanese who are totally ignorant of war. Chang's work should be more focused, and discussed outside of Asia for the sake of the world peace in the future, as well as for the souls of Nanking. They always need your deep understanding, and I hope you will see peace is priceless. I pray that all suffering souls of the holocaust will be safe now. And I really beg more notice on this issue from many other countries. We have to leave from our ignorance. We have to meet at our conscience.
