Summary: One of the best books I have ever read!
Review: I think Pat Conroy deserves an award for this incredible story. I was not only succumbed into Will's life but I was also stunned to find out the truth about the Ten at the end. I recommend this book to anyone. I found only one flaw in the book, there were many times when I was confused on who was talking. Everything else outweights that flaw. I think everyone should read!

Summary: Some writers just had a way with words
Review: When I was applying to the University of Chicago in the winter of 1998, one of the questions they asked was (approximately) for me to describe a few of my favorite books, movies, music, or other works and why they interested me. This book and this author was the first and only one that came to mind. I think it is because of the way he treats his writing. It is not all about plots or characters, but about the way he uses his language. Some of his passages are among the most beautiful that I have ever read. This is not to say he neglects the other elements of writing. The plot is exciting, and his human insights are keen. Especially intriguing is the main character of Will Mclean, who I identify with, perhaps because I feel like I too am going through a time of change in my life. This book is well worth both your money and your time.

Summary: Absolutely riveting
Review: This was a fantastic book. I enjoyed it all the way through, but towards the end, I absolutely could not put it down. I just spent the entire day curled up in a chair reading it; I had to find out what happened. And, the ending was a definite twist, and not at all what I was expecting. One thing that I really enjoyed in this book was Conroy's gorgeous descriptions. His words verge on poetry when he describes things. This is the third book I have read by Conroy, and he is fast becoming my favorite author. I strongly recommend this book. Read it; you won't be disappointed!

Summary: It never fails...
Review: I say that it never fails, and it never has. I've offered large sums of money to anyone who can put this book down and just stop reading in the last one hundred pages. So far, my bank account has never dwindled, and no one has been able to leave the final, crucial events. I've even heard amazing stories of how some folks have gone to extremes to keep themselves awake at 4AM- not willing to miss the concluding moments for the mortal needs of sleep for any reason. Would you like to read the ultimate book on friendship, laughter, caring, love, hardship, honor, concern, betrayal, emotional stability, and death? The Lords of Discipline has it for you. It's set in the times when racial bigotry was much more prevalent, and in a small southern military college where four roommates get a chance to battle the odds and explore the relationships between themselves and with others. It is NOT simply a book about four guys who go to a military college. It IS a book about what it feels like to be a part of a group who counts on his friends for his daily needs, as well as for his ultimate survival. No controversial issue is ommitted, and no emotional response is forgotten. If you've never left home and you've never become dependent on others for your survival, then this is a wake-up call. It's as real as it gets.

Summary: AMAZING!
Review: This book was overwhelming moving. It made me laugh, made my heart race, made me cry... Pat Conroy is a master of words, you will not be able to put this book down. (Unfortunately, some of the other customer reviews tell you too much - it may spoil the entire novel for you).

Summary: The Lords of Discipline
Review: This is a truly excellent book. Conroy is a masterful writer who put his reader in the shoes of Senior Private Will McLean. The reader feels Will's pain as he watches one of his friends commit suicide and his love abandon him. Never have I been so vividly brought back to my own time at The Citadel. Conray deserves full credit for an amazing work.

Summary: A military Masterpiece
Review: Pat conroy is frighteningly truthful in this must read novel about a boys experience in a tough-life military school and his transition from boyhood to being a man. Will Mclean is the narator and hero of this novel. He expresses all the horrid details, all the touching revelations, all the tear-wrenching loyalties involved in this literary work of art. The book is filled with mystery and feeling as Will Mclean, a cadet at Carolina Military Institute, overcomes challenge after challenge and watches his fellow classmen fall out of the ranks of the school. His survival is based on his instincts, his dedication, his friendship. But all of these come under jeapardy as he is torn between friends, the institute, his dreams of love, and his commitment towards the destruction of a malevolent secret force known as The Ten. One of Pat Conroy's best works. You simply cannot put this down after you open it.

Summary: Best Novel I ever read
Review: Assigned to me for summer reading I read this book in 2 days -- the first time I ever read a book of half this length within a week! I couldn't put it down. Strongly recommend this to any one who wants to be engulfed in a story that teaches great lessons amid a few falters of morals

Summary: Lords Of Discipline Near Great Book
Review: Pat Conroy does it right with the story of the Carolina Military Institute in the late '60's, based heavily on The Citadel. Conroy, a 1967 graduate of the Citadel, is best at geography and the description of the landscape, and being a geography buff, that's what makes this work so enjoyable, alongside the fact that the book is possibly based on truth and, keeps you on the edge of your seat the entire time. Conroy's descriptions make you feel that you are sitting in the barracks, or in a statley mansion South Of Broad Street. The only down point is the heavy language, some of which I find offensive, and seems to be the only shadow over Conroy's work.

GOD BLESS YOU ALL!

Summary: Edge of the seat, nail-biting, intense story.
Review: This is an EXCELLENT book to listen to on tape. Wow what a story! I don't know how it compares to the unabridged book, but the tape is something that will definitely keep you awake while driving. Randy Quaid does a great performance in his reading of this book.
