Rating: Summary: Conroy Hits it Big Review: This book is wonderful. Conroy gives you a peek of just what goes on in places like the Citadel and was able to do this because he graduated from the Citadel. It tells the story through the eyes of the main character Will McLean and some of his friends. THey together go through hardships, sadness, and laughter. one part that I thoroughly enjoyed was when the boys make brownies using laxatives knowing that when the seniors catch them with the goodies, they will convescate them and eat them. They do and they all come up with diarhea. But the boys planned ahead. They lined the path to the bathrooms with thumb tacks point up and put barbed wire on the door knob. I'll leave the rest up to you to read.
Rating: Summary: O-h m-y G-O-D-!-!-! _GREAT_ Book! Review: Well, I had a choice of reading a book from a list of three-four books, and this being the biggest of them all. My English teacher recommended it to me, and I had a few weeks (three or four to read it). I read upto p.272 the first three, and the last 227 pages, I were to finish over spring break. But, I read over a whole day! It's mega-great!I hated to read, and now, I love to read these types of books! I loved the book--its very alive to you, and something everyone can relate to. The book is SOO interconnected--at the end, you'll find out why Character X said this and why Character Y moved to place Z, etc. ... Its GREAT! Only thing is--if you're offended by extreme language and sex, then well this book has a lot of the first and a little bit of the second. The only word I was offended by was God$*^n--I'm very religious.Good luck, and this is a MUST get!
Rating: Summary: Pass this one along to anyone in need of a great read! Review: Let's just say that Pat Conroy is very familiar with the way the english language works. He is a true literary artist. The way he describes events and characters in this book is unparalleled to any other novel I've read. I can't tell you how many times he sent chills up my spine. Every page is better then the next.
Rating: Summary: Make plans to wear the cover off of this one. Review: Conroy accomplishes something that most authors never grasp. He blends popular and literary fiction into a single story that's as fast-paced as it is enlightenening. The dialogue is the best I've ever read, and his depiction of Charleston may as well be a photograph. The scenario is simply brilliant. In this one story you feel the horror of racism, the value of an incredibly trying pledgship, and the eternal reward of true friends. The characters all have something to prove, and when they clash they do so with an unforgettable resonance. From the very beginning the tension builds to a point that makes you fidget anxiously, and by the end, you'll feel the resolution in your bones, and you'll know that every bit of justice has been properly placed. Make plans to wear the cover off of this one.
Rating: Summary: Marvelous Review: Pat Conroy has written a thrilling and sobering novel, set in a military college in the south, a school struggling to maintain its traditional aristocratic way of life in a very anti-military era of our country's history. Conroy reveals the side of such an institution that the public never sees: life from the inside, from the cadets' point of view. This novel is a bit verbose and overwritten, yet it is thrilling to follow the subplots and themes of love, honor, duty, friendship, racism, loyalty, sacrifice, as they combine to weave a tangled tale of deceit, betrayal and conquest. All in all a spectacular book.
Rating: Summary: Quality Reading Review: This was the best book I've ever read, no questions asked. Constantly gripping from about page 50 or so, the last 100 pages must be read non stop because the book can't be put down.
Rating: Summary: The most excellent book I have ever read! Review: This book will make you laugh, cry, and cheer the characters on in their quest at the Carolina military Institute. Anyone who reads this book will not be disappointed!
Rating: Summary: Marvelously Inspirational Review: I first read this book after reading Conroy's The Great Santini. Lords of Discipline introduces a truly inspirational role model in Will McLean. Conroy's use of plot twists and almost non-stop action did not allow me to put this book down once. His descriptions of the South Carolinian coast are brilliant, allowing one to see, hear, smell and even taste the Charleston experience. It is one of the only novels I've been able to read more than once and still be genuinely intrigued every time.
Rating: Summary: The Lords of Discipline Review: This book is Pat Conroy's finest. I picked it up and could not stop reading. I believe that Conroy as an author best represents my generation of Southerners. Will McLean is, so far the best character Conroy has given us. Read this book!
Rating: Summary: Amazing Review: Tied with "The Prince of Tides" for the best book I have ever read.
