Summary: Wowzers , Lords of Dicipline is a great book
Review: The Lords of Disipline by Pat Conroy is an excellent book. Conroy uses great lyrical passages and believeable character developement. This novel is beautifully written and the plot keeps the reader begging for more. This book has made me look at friendships and military schools in a different way. This novel shows the importance of doing what you believe is right. The Lords of Discipline deals with honor and the allies that men have to make to survive military shool.

Summary: An amazing book
Review: For a book assigned by an English teacher, it is definitly the best book I have ever read. Most of the books I have found boring, but I could not put this one down. Especially in the last few chapters. It was awsome. I highly recomoend it to anyone. Pat Conroy is gifted with his style of writing. The plot was wonderful, and the end shocked me.

Although some of the reviewers were upset about the language, it's based on what thruly happens. In any military academy the language is just as bad. Granted, it's not something one wants to hear everyday, but it added to the truthness of Conroy's story. Yes, there is a lot of strong lanuage, but the book is so wonderful, it's easy to overlook.

I can not wait to read some of Pat Conroy's other books, he is one of the most gifted authors of our time.

Summary: Great, captivating book.
Review: I've read this book a number of times. Three, four, I can't remember offhand. Each time I read it, I've found myself seeing different parts of it in a new light. This time, I'm more affected by Will McLean's romance with a tragic, Old Charleston girl than I am about his battle with the Institute. The lryical writing style is easy to jump into, and the characters are well drawn and are likeable, hateable, or pityable depending on their role and situation. Great book. Read it now. You won't regret it.

Summary: A good read, but not for everyone
Review: I've read lots of the reviews here and most people seem to talk about the good parts, not the bad. I chose this book to read out of a list for school, and I feel it was a good choice. The book has everything I enjoy: comedy, action, a love story, and drama. The last 50-70 pages of the book I couldn't put it down. I'm not going to go in depth in the book, just explain my dislikes.

First off, the language. While it is pretty much accurate with how people would act in that setting, it makes this book not for kids.

Next, is the sex. While there isn't really much in it, they do reference dirty type jokes, sexual acts, and even one sex scene. Another non-part for kids.

Some parts of the book I thought didn't really add much to the story and broke the flow of the pace, but other then that it was a good read.

Overall, it's a good read, but for mature audiences. If you're not a fan of strong language in a book, this is not for you.

Summary: One of the greatest books I've ever read
Review: I've read this book perhaps 5 times. It is one of the greatest books I've ever read and is definitely in my top 5 best reads list. I won't tell you the plot as other reviewers have, but I would like to quote the first line of the book "I want you to understand why I hate the school with all my power and passion. Then I want you to forgive me for loving the school. You see, I wear the ring." I am currently a 3rd classmen at a federal academy, and this book is very real. Although a bit more brutal than I remember things being...I wouldn't be suprised if it was entirely true for the time period it was written for. You must read, you won't regret it.

Summary: No Pat Answers in Conroy's Novels
Review: I've never been disappointed by a Pat Conroy novel, so I'm not sure why I waited so long to read "Lords of Discipline," but when I ran across the excerpt of McLean's "Great Teacher Theory" twice in a month, I decided it was time to read the book. Conroy's protagonists always resemble one another--but that isn't a fault in his books. I always feel like I'm revisiting someone I met before and wanted to know better. Regardless of age, they are Southern men who both fit and defy the archetypes. Their depth lies in their ambiguity. Will McLean is no exception. At least at the point where he relates his story, he is very self aware. He hates the system represented by the Institute--but he busts his tail to meet the standards it imposes. His attitudes on war, love, authority and friendship shift--but he doesn't quit examining himself. The only frustrations with the book was my realization, as I finished reading, that now I have to wait for Conroy to write another book.

Summary: a great military tale
Review: I have to admit my fondness for all military tales -- I loved Dress Gray, and almost every book I've ever read about military discipline. This one though is one of my all time favorites in that genre. It's brutal at times, but a major page turner. Great plane or beach reading -- just make sure no one interrupts you until you're done. As an aside, because of the vivid pacing and compelling plot, this is a great book to give to kids (especially boys) who are reluctant readers. All students I've recommended this book to have loved it.

Summary: from a military person
Review: While I do not attend the citadel, I do Attend North Georgia Military College in Dahlonega. This book affected me so deeply because of my military background, but it goes beyond that. It is a story of love between men, honor, courage and loyalty. It is also the story of sadism, racism and brutality. This book gave me two heroes for me to attempt to strive to be like. While Will was the moral courage Mark was much more, he was the moral force of the group. The example of his life gives me something to strive for in the future This book is simply great, books do not get better. This is not simply a mans book, it is a book for the ages

Summary: A Powerful, Enduring Story
Review: This book succeeds on so many levels, it is difficult to define in 1,000 words. It is a gripping story, one that keeps the reader guessing until the end. It is also a profoundly moving story of love, loyalty, and honor. And finally, it is a love letter to the city of Charleston. When Conroy writes about Charleston, he is at his poetic best. Those passages beg to be read aloud, so you can feel the weight of his words in your mouth.

Get it, read it, and treasure it. I've read it more times than I care to admit, and I'll read it again soon.

Summary: Incredible!
Review: I don't generally enjoy reading books dealing with military topics, but I'd read a 200 page book on how to make a pancake if Pat Conroy wrote it. One thing about Conroy's writing--things are never quite the way they appear. He always surprises you!

This book makes you wonder what Conroy was like during his days at the "Citadel." One can only assume that he most probably was not the "model" little "soldier." His novels make me wonder if his personal experiences have been as amusing as the experiences he writes about in his novels.

Great novel--well worth reading.!
