Rating: Summary: This is the most entertaining of Conroy's books. Review: This is an emotional rollercoaster of the experiences of a boy who is enrolled at the Citadel, a military school in South Carolina. It is about the struggles of the students who attended the Citadel during his stay. This book would be especially suited to high school boys who either go to a stern private school or military school. An exceptional read.
Rating: Summary: A masterpiece! One of the finest books I've ever read. Review: The Lords of Discipline tells the tale of 4 boys on a journey to manhood. It takes place at the Citidel Military Academy in the mid 1960's. It examines the prejudice and cruelty of that time and place. What draws me to the book, however, is not as much the story, but the way the story is told. It is not the destination, but the journey. Pat Conroy has a mastery of the English language that allows the reader to be a part of the story. I could smell the river, taste the food, feel the pain. Conroy has a way of stating simple ideas in a way that brings them to life. From the opening "I wear the ring" to the very last line, the reader is treated to words that have been expertly woven into a story that will touch your every sense and emotion.
Rating: Summary: thought provoking, hilarious at times, brilliantly composed Review: i first read this book when i was 15 and can honestly say i've never read another work that has gripped me as quickly and held my attention so completely in the past 14 years. it's difficult to explain just how beautiful conroy constructs words together to form what can only be considered a true american classic. when conroy describes the day of will's last game against j. mance and vmi it's as if you're there with him as he realizes his youth fading away in the form of a beautifully placed flower. i've recommended this to several friends over the years and without exception all have raved about this book and it's obvious contribution to american literature.
Rating: Summary: Reality smacks you in the face in this Conroy novel. Review: As an avid reader of Pat Conroy, this is probably my most favorite of his works. I grew up in awe of The Citadel, and the men it produced. I have never laughed, cried, and lived so vicariously through a book, as I have with this title.
Rating: Summary: A passionate story of brotherhood and betrayal Review: The story of four young men (Will McLean, Dante Pignetti (Pig), Mark Santoro, and Tradd St. Croix. These four men entered the Institute (Caroline Military Institute) alone. They forged the best of friendships only to be ripped apart by one traitor. A must read.
Rating: Summary: Draws you closer until it leaves you at the end..awesome!! Review: As a student this book grips me at a different level. It was assigned reading but became so much more, the result is that the cover is now well worn. Pat Conroy uses every tactic to evoke all emotions from the reader. I have read many of his other books and this one proves to be the best use of his talents. The military aspect may be a little boring at first but the details keep it from falling into the background as the characters themselves become increasingly complex. This keeps a real edge to the novel, keeping your fingers glued to the pages. This story maintains it's grip on your heart and soul until the end when it leaves you breathless and yearning for more. This book suites everyone and I have never met anyone who hasn't raved over it for weeks. I certainly think it will always hold the title of "The best book I have ever read".
Rating: Summary: Best Book Since "The Catcher in the Rye" Review: This book has reinforced why I am going to become an English teacher. I cannot wait to have my students read this work of art. Emotions will run wild when reading this book, and just when the mystery is supposedly solved of the history of "The Ten," something else comes up--like a huge domino effect. Thank you to Melissa Jensen of Ball State University for recommending this book.
Rating: Summary: God preserve "The Lords Of Discipline", the best book ever Review: "The Lords Of Discipline" is impossible to desribe because of the fact that it is nothing but amazing. Pat Conroy's amazing use of words and emotion exceed those of any writer, whether it be Hemingway or King or Shakespeare himself. This book HAS to be read by people whom respect and love good books. I read this book in five days very easily (I could of read it MUCH faster if I had the time). There is no doubt this book will suceed with amazing grace. Brian Addison, Big Bear, Calif.
Rating: Summary: Shockingly Realistic. A must read. Review: This is by far the greatest book I have ever read.
Rating: Summary: The Best! The movie was great but the novel was much better Review: Definitely the best of Pat Conroy. Language is beautiful. Barbra Streisand did an excellent job of creating a film on a love story with a great scenario, casting and music, but the novel has many places that weren't included in the film, making it somewhat a different focus. It is about family and the novel portraits this in a bit eccentric, but a wonderful way.
