Rating: Summary: Michael's Best Review: Written well before Bowling for Columbine, this book is no doubt Michael's best. Satirical, yet not with the somtimes idiotic and overbearingness of his later books.
Rating: Summary: Brilliant, Funny, Insane! Review: A volley of humorous - often brilliant, sometimes insane - liberal and progressive ideas covering the entire spectrum of American life from the maker of the Oscar-winning documentary Bowling for Columbine.
Rating: Summary: Michael Moore's Best Book to Date Review: This is the first Michael Moore book I read. Then I read his other releases as they came out because I was blown away by the quality of this book. It is a shame that Stupid White Men was the book that he got really famous for, because although it is a great book, this book takes the cake as his definite best. The first reason why this book is better is because it is much more entertaining. It is much more playful in nature than his other books and is much funnier. Stupid White Men had humour, but seemed mostly to me to be a book of complaints against right winged people in America. This book, Downsize This, is first and foremost a satyrical comedy. The best chapters are the ones about masturbation and campaign funding. If anyone has read Stupid White Men and hasn't read this, definitely pick it up, I think you will be pleasantly surprised with how much better it is.
Rating: Summary: Sarcasim 101. The Michael Moore way Review: I seem to encounter two kinds of people when it comes to the work of Michael Moore. Those who were completely outraged by his Oscar speech, and think he is a two-faced blow-hard (because he says he hates rich, corporate America yet lives in upscale NYC & works with the big-wigs in Hollywood), or those who think he is some kind of leader of the new-Liberal movement. i think both sides are taking it to the extreme. Simply put, Moore is someone who 'gets it'. He sees past all the spin that the government tries to put on everything...and he's not afraid to stand up and say they're full of it.This, Moore's first book, stands as his best to date. While "Stupid White Men" and "Dude, Where's My Country" tended to get more then a little preachy on certain subjects...this finds him tackling everything from NAFTA, Pat Buchanan, various Militia groups, to the Bush family, and OJ...tongue super-glued in cheek. His 'dueling' chapters "OJ is Innocent" & "OJ is Guilty" will leave more then a few people confused as to his true opinion on the subject. Which i think was the point. The sections i enjoyed most, are the ones where Moore more then tries to take a humorous take on some serious, and not so serious subjects. His forbidden love for Hillary Clinton, Pat Buchanan cashing a check from "The John Wayne Gacey Fan Club", and my personal favorite, how Steve Forbes is actually an alien. It's when Moore (as so often happen in his later books)begins to get preachy and holier then thou on certain topics, that he looses some of his punch. There are many people who just don't get what Michael Moore has to say. But he definitely makes you think and question what you're hearing/seeing/reading. and regardless of what you may think about his views...discussion can only be a good thing.
Rating: Summary: Extremely juvenile Review: Maybe naive, left-leaning undergrads who have never had to really work will find this amusing. I wonder how many of the "working people" (most everyone I know works) that Moore claims to champion have any interest in reading this or agree with Moore. Moore fails as a humorist and as a political pundit.
Rating: Summary: His funniest Book! Review: If you're new to Moore (maybe after seeing his Oscar speech or Bowling for Columbine) and you're thinking about reading one of his books then start with this. It's his first and funniest book. Stupid White Men is great, but I didn't bust a gut like I did when I read this one. Here's my suggestion: read this one whenever and then read Stupid White Men and Dude, Where's my Country back to back. Also, be sure to watch his films for a more moving expirience.
Rating: Summary: This book made me angry and motivated Review: There's so much talk of whether or not Moore stretches the truth or fabricates his material, but if even 1/4 of what he says in Downsize This is true, it's enough to get you angry and motivated enough to go out and make a change in our world.
Rating: Summary: Michael Moore - couragous american Review: I don't understand why he's attracting so much hate these days. People just don't get that he is fighting for YOU. He's putting up the courage to SPEAK UP, use your RIGHT AS A CIVILLIAN in a DEMOCRACY. Or is it a democracy? Is the USA governed by corporate rich people? Firing people at will just to make MORE MONEY? Downsize This is a book that deals with what everyone bothers, but noone talks about. Why don't more people follow Michael Moore and speak up? You should get this book, and get Stupid White Men, and Bowling for Columbine... because you should see that there is a man out there who speaks up, maybe he's on the "people to kill" list of the CIA.... Don't let rich people ruin your country! Don't let them put up billions of money for the military, because these are billions that will be missed in education, welfare and way-of-life!!! Downsize THAT! Get this book!
Rating: Summary: Unintentionally Funny "Wake-Up!" Call Review: Michael Moore has been catapulted to the position of spokesman for the working folks of America, seemingly taking over the torch for Ralph Nader. Exposing the corporate indifference to the working man's plight, Moore travels America to hear the facts from those who are affected by the downward trend caused mainly by the greed of a few who shamelessly exploit the masses. Labeled "commie", the quick response many die hard "certain party memebers" throw at anyone questioning a corrupt system headed mainly by their own (certain party members), Moore is nothing more than a fellow American who gives a damn. "Downsize This!" is a humerous look at America as seen through the mirror of truth. No FOX News Show can dispute the facts spelled out in this book. The only defense anyone offers is an offense aimed to discredit the work Moore has done. Adding to his many accomplishments is Moore's recent International success "Bowling For Columbine", earning among other awards an Oscar for Best Documentary. Moores "controversial" acceptance speech was cut short, drowned out by early music play-off. Funny, the Best Actor got more than triple the time given to Moore, with hardly more to say. There is a message in all of this, and a considerable part of America is tuning in...and they VOTE!*****
Rating: Summary: Hilarious ! And it might help some think... Review: I do not believe Michael Moore expects any sympathy from anyone. There are just things that bother him, and things that don't. Unlike most of us chickens or lazy people who just like to complain but do nothing else, he decided to take action. His writing and train of thought are very entertaining, his ideas might disturb some people (which is exactly what he expects). If only people would read his books, even just to try to challenge what he says, eventually risking to be convinced, our country would definitely move forward, for once. Still, one thing I don't like about his techniques, is that he uses a lot of "cold" statistics, and we all know you can make numbers say just about anything you want... But I still believe a man like him is a treasure to the US of A, finally someone challenging...
