Rating: Summary: Moore's book is a waste of paper and ink. Review: Moore shows a total lack of understanding of economics, corporations, unions, and almost everything. His premise is that corporations' sole function is to have obligations to their employees, and that employees' sole function is to be provided a job by corporations. If you want a mishmash of rewarmed Marxism, and if you think someone owes you a living, buy this book. Otherwise, don't even accept it as a gift.
Rating: Summary: Words from the naive Review: I bought this book because I had heard that Michael Moore was funny. I'd give it only 1 star except that his views make one think hard on their own positions and often strengthen one's own views (which are usually in complete contract to Moore's).It's pretty apparent that Moore knows nothing on business or economics. Living in Detroit, I'm well aware of the issues the auto companies face, one of Moore's favorite targets. The simple fact is, supply and demand determine the value of something, not Moore's arbitrary judgement on who should get paid what. What's worse, Moore undercuts his own arguments by wandering around attacking other targets that have nothing to do with the topic of his choice. He only ensures that we know him for what he is, the stereotypical liberal who represents much of what conservatives attack: irrational, uneducated, people who don't live in the land of reality but instead in a magical world where the government could wave a wand and take care of all social ills if only those evil companies and conservatives would quit interfering. A complete waste of time for anyone looking for humor.
Rating: Summary: Mild Review: I just finished "Downsize This" by Micheal Moore and I must say I found it somewhat mild in terms of creativity. There was some interesting material, but most of it was simply his thoughts on political issues (and it was very dated). I guess that is why he called it "Random Thoughts". I really think that I could have done just as good of a job myself. So why is it that Michal Moore can get a book contract and I cannot? I thought that perhaps the publisher would offer him a contract beacuse of his track record, but after "Downsize This" I realize that the publisher knows that people like me will think "Hey that Micheal Moore guy that made that great movie Roger and Me now has a book out. I think I'll go buy it." They don't much care what Micheal has to say as long as he completes a book they can sell. Funny how alot of things come down to money (with the exception of 'Roger and Me' which, incidentally, I think is one of the best movies I ever saw).
Rating: Summary: Fantastic Reading! I loved every devilish page! Review: Michael Moore is one of the leading liberal writers of our times. In a time when Liberalism is a four letter word, he makes you proud to be one again!!!!!
Rating: Summary: Social & Economic Justice in America vs Predatory Cynicism Review: After financial success from his documentary film, "Roger [Roger Smith of General Motors] and Me" made in an American factory worker's nightmare, a.k.a. Flint, Michigan, Michael Moore looked into the national scene for his book "Downsize This!." Although casually and loosely written [minus one point out of 10], Moore manages to record what is wrong with America during this period of bottom line ideological fundamentalism. After decades of loyalty to motherhood, apple pie, the American flag and country, and American corporations lots of workers are getting screwed as their "rewards." Moore documents the lives and work of the screwees and screwors. He also pokes holes in the mythological formula: American corporations = American democracy. The main "crime" that this book commits is to be unashamedly sympathetic to the screwees; the American workers who are downsized (thrown out of their jobs) to produce bigger profits for shareholders and corporate CEO fat cats. This book will of course offend the toadies of corporate greed and phony American patriotism. But in the spirit of "Down Size This!" screw 'em.
Rating: Summary: Nice Review: Good intentions, exposing the hypocrisy and evil of the Republican Party, but without the sophistication of Al Franken's "Rush Limbaugh is a Big Fat Idiot."
Rating: Summary: Moore's no expert, but who says the CEOs ARE? Review: Michael Moore provides great satire in "Downsize This!" Beneath the humor, he does strive to construct a moral perspective on corporate America and its overemphasis on maximized profits, greed, environmental trashing, etc. It is no shocker to say that Moore tends to oversimplify many of the issues. Even so, why do some readers jump on him so ferociously for that? You don't typically see the same kind of indignation when those in charge of the corporations make "bonehead" statements to the media. We need Michael Moore and his satire, however flawed it might be, because, let's face it, the "big boys" who wear the suits, sit in the suites, and think that Langston Hughes is an upscale men's store -- they've been having their say far too often and for far too long.
Rating: Summary: Downsize Michael Moore! Review: I was willing to dismiss this book as just a tongue-in-cheek satirical commentary by another "Hollywood type." That is until Mr. Moore began appearing on television shows acting as an expert on economic and social issues. Something he clearly is not. And anyone that even casually reads this book could plainly see that.
Rating: Summary: An inspirational yet somewhat disturbing outlook on the US. Review: Never have I read a book that has made me laugh and feel somewhat disturbed at the same time. Downsize This! continues in the tradition of TV Nation and Roger and Me in spotlighting what's wrong with our country in a satirical manner. Moore is a true political satirist whose views may be a little outlandish at times (see the chapter on OJ Simpson.) Moore's witt is responsible for turning very serious topics into comedic and interesting reading.
Rating: Summary: Downsize This is the best book! Review: Not only does this book have a great sense of humor unlying this story, but a great sense of morality to go along with it. Where else can you learn about the abuse of the planet and the american worker all while being entertained? Michael Moore is one of the funniest and most intelligent people I know. Keep upu the the great work
