Rating: Summary: Mike is Number 1 Review: In spite of comments by the likes of Michael Gerber, the left has a great sense of humor (Al Franken, Katha Pollitt, Molly Ivins, etc etc) but Michael Moore is one of the funniest. The best thing about Moore is that he has the power to shake people out of their stupors and say "hey, I really can make a difference" and "hey, there's no divine right of corporations to make a buck at any cost to society" and then go do something about it. If you don't believe that Michael Moore has influence, then you aren't aware of his campaign to kick out the Republicans this past election - which was pretty damn successful.
Rating: Summary: Finally! Review: Finally! A true progressive who has remembered the people who progressives used to care about! Many in the American left would do well to learn from Moore that liberalism should not only be about trendy social issues (Republicans are not the only ones with a litmus test on abortion) but standing for the people of this nation whose lives are being crushed by the callous indifference, and outright hostility of corporation's drive for obscene profits at any cost. It is time someone reminded America that labor creates all profit.
Rating: Summary: A MUST READ!!! Review: A very insightful and thoughtfull book, I just saw his movie "the big one" and its just as good as the book. Any one who tries to say he is wrong IS probably the "bad guy" himself. Very funny book and movie! a must read!
Rating: Summary: an absolute must to read Review: This should be mandatory reading for school students No I take that back. It should be mandatory reading for anyone who no longer desires to be in a comatose state about the direct connection between big business and government. Many thanks to Michael; for the information and making last years Christmas shopping so easy. Copies of "Downsize This" for everyone.. I didnt know whether to laugh or cry while reading it. Michael has a way of informing us of some pretty gloomy realities with just the right dose of humor. As always I look forward to the next movie or book by him. By the way I am a member of L.U. 103, IBEW out of Boston, Our local newletter has had rave review on different things he has done in the past and I always enjoy seeing the word getting out at such a level.
Rating: Summary: Totally lacking in thought and critical analysis. Review: My Popular Culture in America class read and discussed this book in depth. We differed widely in opinions, but a number of us thought that this book is a discredit to socially conscious citizens. Michael Moore exposes himself as a racist (see chapter on the Germans) and an advocate for violent retaliation (see chapter on the LA Riots). He rants and raves and offers no viable solutions to any of the very real issues he rants against. The only positive thing I can say about Moore's book, is that it gets our attention and anger focused on the social problems created by downsizing and corporate greed, and makes us want to do something about it. But with no rational analysis! Sorry, Mike, torching Beverly Hills, as you suggest, just isn't an option for most of us, and not very amusing, either. I'm disappointed in Moore. I liked "Roger & Me" -- until I read this book. If you want to read a book that's thoughtful as well as entertaining, read Jim Hightower's book, "There's Nothing in the Middle of the Road but Yellow Stripes & Dead Armadillos." -- it has plenty of amusing comments, no unhelpful ranting -- and lots of credible commentary.
Rating: Summary: A sorely-needed point of view Review: With the glut of right-wing political tomes that have flooded the market over the past decade, it was high time for a die-hard liberal to start shooting back. Michael Moore steps into the role nicely, and the book is worth reading if only for balance after your latest Rush Limbaugh paperback. Moore puts forth incredibly convincing arguments that jibe nicely with the corporate hypocrisy shown us daily. He also presents the most convincing arguments you will ever hear one way or another about the O.J. Simpson trial. In fact, this is expanded in the paperback edition, making it the better buy.
Rating: Summary: jampacked with the awful truth; delightfully sardonic! Review: We've long suspected the truths that Michael Moore clothes in well-researched data and stats; and presents so wryly, sardonically, satirically that the book is very difficult to put down. I read it in two sittings. I gave copies as gifts last Christmas to all my friends with (l) a social sense, (2) the ability to read, and (3) an appreciative if not creative sense of humor. I will eagerly buy, read, watch and listen to any product of the mind of Michael Moore; and I am currently trying to find where I can purchase the videotape of THE BIG ONE because I live in a benighted part of the planet (Monmouth County, New Jersey) where we don't have a prayer of being able to see THE BIG ONE at the movies. Could somebody from Amazon or Miramax or DogEatDog Films please let us "only occasional" users of the InterNet know, on the InterNet, how to order this videotape by mail? what address, how much money?
Rating: Summary: Bold, Insightful, and best of all, funny Review: While it is true that my own views of politics and economics have been conservative, I must say that Michael Moore has indeed helped me to see just what 'the other side' thinks. I have read some of the negative reviews that have said that Moore knows nothing about politics or economics. I would like to tell these people to get a life! This book is a satire. One does not need to be an expert in politics and economics to believe that some things this country is doing are wrong. In this book, Moore is utilizing something that he [and millions of Americans] has. It's called common sense.PS- They never should have cancelled TV Nation.
Rating: Summary: A crime fighting chicken: "Hey everybody, I wrote a book!" Review: Mike says he saw one day of the OJ trial, the Furman Tape day, and overall he was convinced "White America" unjustly convicted OJ with no evidence. His entire book reads the same way. He saw one instance, so here is the world according to Mike. A couple of cogent sentences here and there, with creative license, and justified angst at GM and other major corporate polluters...a well placed satire on former Nixon-dirty-trixter-turned-CNN-idealogue Pat Buchanan...not a bad read if you have an hour or so to breeze through it.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Book!!! Review: This book is great. While Moore is not an expert in economics and business as far as having an educational background, he is an expert at living real life. Most of the time this book is a riot, a lot of the time it makes you think. This is humor. Warning: If you think Ronald Reagan was a great president you may want to avoid this book, too many big words...
