Summary: Try Again John!!!
Review: I read the Summons in about 3 days. It was boring and the end was even worse than the entire book. I am a huge Grisham fan and I believe he was asleep when he wrote this! He is so very capable of 110% better work. I really did not care what happened to Ray in this book. What's up with Nathan Bedford Forrest...Forrest Gump??? It was not a thriller at all...like I'm used to. There was really no suspense. Usually, Grishman's books are hard to put down. I know that he can write better that this. Try again John!!!!

Summary: Grisham churns out another sub-par book
Review: I had been waiting for Grisham's next novel, but I was little disappointed in "The Summons." The book lacks real character development of the major characters. We know more about the Judge than we do about Ray or Forrest; and the Judge is dead for most of the book! I believe the story line is there, but it isn't developed well enough to involve the reader in really caring about the characters. If you want to read Grisham at his best, pick up "A Time to Kill." You won't be disappointed.

Summary: A Bit on theThin Side
Review: I usually like John Grisham books. However, "The Summons" didn't meet my expectations. The most colorful character ,the judge, is dead. The main character, Ray, is very white bread. The book felt like it droned on in some places then quickly and unsatisfactorly came to its end. An ending I had already guessed. I love Grisham but not this new Spartan type of writing. I would love his next book to be plump and ripe with full characters and wildly dangerous and delicious plots.

Summary: The Summons
Review: Very disappointing, shallow story, too short. Mr Grissom has apparently forgotten what got him to be a best selling author. He has lost me as a customer.

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: PREHAPS NOT HIS BEST BUT STILL VINTAGE GRISHAM
Review: "The Summons" is not the best John Grisham novel. I reserve that for "The Firm," "The Rainmaker" and "Testament," but this new legal thriller is still vintage Grisham. A good fast read with twists and turns along the way.

One note: this is the least "legal" of Grisham's legal thrillers. Yes, the main characters are a judges two sons and there are other lawyers and legal types through out the book but the main story does not take place in a legal setting, no law firm offices (except for a tort lawyer's yacht, if that counts), no court rooms, etc. This is a story of human greed that really could be told in any setting.

Still Grisham delivers and you won't be disapointed as long as you don't set your hopes too high.

And a point of irony, another book about two brothers and three million dollars is on the best seller list: "The Millionaires." Nothing shows just how bad "The Millionaires" is by reading what a master of his craft can really do with his story as Grisham does in "The Summons." Even medicore Grisham is better than anything you'll read in "The Millionaires."

Bottom line: while not the best novel he's written your in safe hands with Grisham and in for a enjoyable time. Think of "The Summons" as Grisham Lite.

Summary: Insipid ...and boring.
Review: This is by no means an "adult" novel. Probably
a good one for middle-schoolers. Although neither
age group is likely to learn a new word or
a catchy phrase after reading.

JG should stick to writing about law.

Summary: Not his best
Review: I didn't read his last two books because, quite frankly, I love Grisham legal thrillers, not just Grisham books. So, I'm sad to say that this one was a disappointment. Not horrible (one or two stars), but certainly not praiseworthy either. There wasn't any reason to root for Ray - he really didn't have much of a life - and I just couldn't imagine anything improving for him as a multimillionaire. His brother left alot to be desired, even in the end. The ending was one of those that makes you go "HUH? That's it?!?" I hope his next gets back to what makes him a best selling author.

Summary: disappointing
Review: I found this book to be disappointingly shallow, short, and without much substance. Finished it in a few hours. Neither characters nor plot had much substance. Grisham is riding on his reputation.

Summary: Disappointed grisham fan
Review: I am a big fan of Grisham. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed with this book. The story developed very slowly which was boring at times. And the ending, even though unexpected, is just not your usual Grisham's ending.

Summary: When will we return to Grisham's yesteryears?
Review: Oh, how I would love to fall in love with a Grisham novel again. It's been years! The runaway Jury was the last one that captured me. I liked Grisham's sidestep (a painted house). It was a well written book, but nothing I can't find with other writers. Grisham writes legal thrillers, so why is his last book no thriller? The story gets interesting around page 260 and the end is ok, but why must we sit through the motions of burial, lunch and sleepless nights? It's spring, I wanted to fall in love so much, but it's not there, the groundhog saw his shadow (and this book), 6 more weeks of winter.
