Summary: SOLID GRISHAM
Review: I actually enjoyed this book - the set-up of the cash-find was intriguing, the protagonist's reaction was understandable, things developed plausibly and there was an excellent explanation for the money in the end. As always in his legal thrillers, Grisham takes the reader behind the law and into the South in a way no other author can. On top of that, his prose style is so crisp, so intelligent and reader-friendly that he deserves an award just for that. A very good novel that's definitely worth a look.

Summary: Not completely horrible, not great...
Review: If you're a fan of the early Grisham novels, you'll be a little bummed out about the lack of depth in this book. I was able to figure out the mystery long before the story ended.

Although The Summons read like a junky "McBook" (i.e. short read, not terribly taxing, somewhat predictable), I was still entertained.

I'm hoping the next one will be better.

Summary: The Summons
Review: While the book was good and kept me interested, it is not the best John Grisham book. The plot was intriguing but predictable and the ending was anti-climactic and a bit dull. I do recommend it but don't think you should get your hopes up too high before reading it.

Summary: The Least Entertaining Grisham Novel
Review: I have read every Grisham novel and always buy them without even perusing them first. I guess I will have to examine them more closely in the future. This book features a sketchy plot that seems to ramble along wishfully looking to pick up our interest with very few developments. I read it to the end, hoping for a redeeming climax, but .....

Summary: The story lost steam!
Review: I didn't like this book much. It had a lot of potential (like The Testament), starts off with a bang (like The Testament) but loses steam about half way through and you just can't wait to get to the end so that you can at least say that you finished the book! It got very boring after a while, Grisham unsuccessfully tries to build suspense around totally uninteresting characters (The most interesting character, Judge Atlee, dies in the beginning of the book). Grisham can do much better than this. Because his books are usually so good, I haven't given up on him yet and will await the next book. I gave this one two stars simply because it kept me going until about the middle of the book.

Summary: Summon the Summons
Review: What has happened to John Grisham? Usually the writer of intrigue and mystery, "The Summons" is blatantly predictable and certainly not up to this author's standards. His only attempt at suspense is having an unbelievable amount of money shuttled thruought the chapters (when any sensible person would have found a bank safety depository--but then there would have been no story!) Stay tuned for a sequel as the ending leaves the reader without an end. Let's hope Mr. Grisham is not becoming a "run of the mill" writer, since his prior publications have reflected his juristic talent and "The Summons" appears to be cranked out for profit.

Summary: The Summons
Review: If you are an avid Grisham reader, this book will be a great disappointament. The lack of action and plot line is frustrating to read. Without the normal excitment that fills other Grisham books, The Summons is difficult to read completely through. This was definitely not Grisham at his best.

Summary: Is this what Grisham works are about
Review: The first Grisham book I read. Not what I've heard about Grishman at all. easy read and a waste of time. the plot was weak and underdeveloped. Actually there didn't seemed to be much of a plot that could be further developed. Moral is good. It states that greed will drive one to extremes and an unpleasant life, however it's not worth your money not to mention the time.

Summary: Terrible
Review: Reading this book was a waste of time and money. Must have run into an editorial deadline.

Summary: Summon a better book
Review: John Grisham sometimes has a magical way of sucking you into a slickly developing plot while at the same time giving you characters that you become attached to. His Earlier books, the Firm, a Time to Kill ect... could hook you in on page 3 and not let you go until the final senatnce.

Unfortunatly, The summons is NOT like those books, in fact it does not even seem to have been written by the same person. I wonder if, having success with books outside the legal arena, Grisham lost interest in the genre and was merely writing this book to fulfill a contractual obligation. The characters were paper thin, the small town in Mississippi was a pale shadow of the town in a Time to Kill, the supporting characters had the potential to be interesting but never made it past characatures, and the ending was tacked on and did NOT explore easy options that even a non-lawyer would have been able to see.

The basic plot, two brothers are summoned home by their honored old judge-father head back to their small Mississippi hometown. The father is sick, dying, and wants them to come back to deal with his estate. When the main character gets home he finds the father dead, a new will written leaving an estate consisting of the house and $6,000,... and $3,000,000 in cash hidding in a closet that is not mentioned in the will. The son is worried about three things, one that the money is the result of something illegal, two, that somebody else might know about it, and three, that his drug addict brother will find it.

Should have been a good story but but it seemed as if Mr. Grisham was taking a , not undeserved, rest from writing during the writing of this book. I just wish that on the cover it has said "Grisham Lite" as a warning to book buying public.
