Summary: Best Romance Novel I've Ever Read!!
Review: My childhood best friend and I discovered this book in junior high school. I can still remember my math teacher Mrs. Brown yelling at me because I was secretly reading this book in her class (ah, what memories!!).

I passed this on to my dear friend and she read this book in one setting. This would be an amazing book to read with your lover on a snowy winter weekend or listen to on audiobook.

I can't recommend it enough!

Summary: A Page Turner.
Review: The beginning of this story is terrific. Of course, every woman's fantasy is to have a knight in shining armor, so the story's idea is beautiful. The setup read is quick, heavenly, humorous, and fun! Then the author makes a fumble.

Dougless Montgomery is a modern day woman, but a weak individual. She allows people to walk all over her. She is trying to hold onto a wretched man - a wretched man with a wretched daughter. In a rare moment of strength Dougless disagrees with the obnoxious daughter. The result - Dougless is left behind -- stranded in the English countryside. Heartbroken Dougless breaks down in tears and cries out for a knight in shining armor - presto, Nicholas Stafford, a knight from the sixteenth century appears.

Now Deveraux has great fun with her reader. We explore the twentieth century with Nicholas. Dougless may be a reluctant guide but she is hooked -- hooked on this adorable, handsome man. Of course, Nicholas and Dougless fall deeply in love - a love that has dire consequences. These consequences force our lovers back to the sixteenth century.

Now the reader explores Tudor England with the twosome; however, this exploration is not nearly as amusing. Nicholas Stafford does not remember their initial attraction and the couple is forced to begin anew. The results? The reading becomes long. Nicholas' denial grows tiresome. When our duo again finds love, Deveraux also takes control. The author now writes some of most romantic words I have ever read -- sigh! Yet this is not a happily-ever-after story. Dougless and Nicholas do not remain together. Deveraux chooses another romance path? Nicholas dies in the sixteenth century and Dougless returns to her time. Still Deveraux does manage to convince her reader -- every woman needs a knight in shining armor!

Summary: 3 and 1/2 stars--Good but not great
Review: This is the first book that I have read by Jude Deveraux and I ordered it based on the rave reviews from the customers. Mine is obviously the minority opinion here since this book is rated 5 stars by customers with over 350 reviews, but I was disappointed and almost did not finish reading the story (an unheard of event for me since I frequently whip through a novel a day!) My problem was less with the book's plot(which was rather good) and more with the writing style. The writing and sentence structure, particularly at the beginning of the book, was distractingly uninspired and it really detracted from my enjoyment of the story. Towards the end of the book, things got a bit better (perhaps because the story became more engaging.)
The story itself is a romantic fantasy with entertaining elements of time travel and a theme of enduring love. Unfortunately, the heroine, Dougless, is a spineless doormat at the beginning of the tale (another problem with the book, in my opinion) and the hero is a bit too conceited and high-handed in his treatment of her (I mean, after all, he was supposed to be her *soulmate* "Knight in Shining Armor" pulled by love through over 400 years to be with her--he could have been a *little* bit nicer to her...) I suppose that compared to everyone else in the book, Nicholas (the hero) was *relatively* nice to Dougless, but only because the rest of the characters treated her so appallingly bad. On the plus side, she does gain some self-respect by the end of the tale and Nicholas eventually does become the kind of lover that one would be willing to travel 400 years to meet.
This book is wildly popular, so clearly my complaints are not universal; however, for a truly fabulous and well-written romantic time travel story, I would go straight to "Outlander" by Diana Gabaldon.

Summary: Best of All TIME!
Review: This was one of the first romances I ever read and I find that it is still my favorite after 10 years of devoted romance readership. This book, filled with adventure, heartbreak, love, loyalty, time-travel, humor, and intelligence, is one of the most deftly told and engaging works of fiction I have read.

The heroine, Douglas, is gutsy and smart, vulnerable but strong enough to fight and survive. The Hero, Nicholas, is strong and arrogant but altogether charming and lovable. I fell in love with them both and still enjoy the intracay of their romance after too many readings to count. Jude Deveraux is the Master. A must read and a keeper for All WOMEN!!
