Rating: Summary: Intriguing Review: It's an interesting book, but I have to say I'm a little disillusioned in James Van Praagh. Years ago, back around early 1994, before he became a nationally known celebrity, my mother would drag me over to her television to watch JVP on some obscure talk show. I was impressed then by his seeming decency. My mother asked me to write to him for a reading; she was willing to spend the time and expense to fly thousands of miles to see him. He wrote back saying he was no longer able to read personally anymore, and was dedicating himself to writing and lecturing. Understandable. Yet my eighty-year-old mother was very disappointed, and would have given anything to hear from my late father, as she had belief in JVP's ability to do so. But then, what's this? I keep reading now that any celebrity from soap stars to Cher can request a reading from him very easily, with no trouble at all, no waiting list, nothing. It bothers me also to see that on t.v. he's lost that compassionate, unstaged quality, and he seems to be going in for silly initial games as other psychics do "Do you know someone with a H? Sounds like an H?" He seems nervous, and too eager to please, and his book reflects this shrewd quality. It's very fascinating but I don't know how much now is entertainment, that of him writing under duress to make money, and how much really comes from a gifted inner centeredness.
Rating: Summary: HARD TO BELIEVE - BUT HELPFUL! Review: AS A NEW COMER TO INFORMATION RELATING TO LIFE AFTER-DEATH, I FOUND MR VAN PRAAH'S BOOK "REACHING TO HEAVEN" SO FULL OF INFORMATION, I WONDERED HOW HE COULD POSSIBLY SUPPLY SUCH DETAIL OF THE SPIRIT WORLD. I DID HOWEVER, FIND SOME DETAILS TO BE VERY HELPFUL. I RECENTLY READ JENNY CRAWFORD'S BOOK "THROUGH THE EYES OF SPIRIT" AND COULD RELATE TO THE SIMPLISTIC FORM AND INFORMATION SUPPLIED ABOUT LIFE AFTER-DEATH IN HER BOOK. I AM SORRY TO HEAR THAT MR VAN PRAAGH NO LONGER GIVES PRIVATE READINGS TO THOSE WHO ARE TRULY IN NEED.
Rating: Summary: Reaching for comfort Review: After reading many books by several empowering authors such as Betty Eadie, John Edward, Sylvia Browne, and Tiffany Snow, that I am still reading, my life has opened up to me in such a compelling and wonderful way. This new book is well written, and thought provoking. There are great transforming authors, who shift the consciousness of humankind in a way never known before, and have the courage to reveal their paranormal experiences. "Reaching to Heaven" is one of these.
Rating: Summary: Don't have to be a true believer to enjoy Review: I tend to believe that anyone who is so inclined to read this book will do so regardless of what others may say or think of author James Van Praagh latest follow up to "Talking to heaven." Most likely the potential reader will be a fan of his or one who believes wholeheartedly in his work. I myself was neither and read it with a healthy amount of skepticism and open mindedness. After reading this book I can say my position is much the same. I still have no opinion on whether or not he is a gifted psychic or not. I did however enjoy much of the book. Although I haven't decided on his abilities I do believe in life after death. I also believe that there are most likeley those who can communicate with souls that have passed on. In anycase I enjoyed the book for it's discussion on spiritual matters not just the idea of "talking with the dead." In the book Van Praagh discusses such matters as fear, guilt, love, and forgiveness. All of these discussions brought me to reflecting at least a couple of times. Although nothing is said that I really haven't heard already, they are said in simple terms and just the act of reading them again caused me to reflect. One of the great spiritual axioms is that the most important time is the present time. So many people spend their time in the past filled with guilt, or filled with fear about tomorrow. This keeps us from reaching our true potential. This is just one example of the spiritual axioms he discusses. So regardless of whether or not you believe he is the giften psychic he and others claim him to be I feel there is something to be gained from reading this one session read.

Rating: Summary: A Warm and Sensitive Book About the Other Side Review: With empathy and feeling, James VAn Praagh writes on a level of understanding that most readers can experience. His discussions are clear, we follow his ideas and we rejoice in the experiences he shares as he helps others through difficult emotional losses. A helpful book for those seeking more than the traditional religious avenues for comfort and peace. Evelyn Horan - teacher/counselor/author Jeannie, A Texas Frontier Girl, Books One - Three
Rating: Summary: James Van Praagh verified what I got off the Ouiji Board Review: For over 30 years my sister and I have communicated with the dead through the Ouiji Board. We have had many sessions providing us with information on what it was like after death -- the stages, feelings, etc. When I read Mr. Van Praagh's book, I was totally struck with his descriptions. They were the very same descriptions that we have been told over the years through the Ouiji Board. We were told about the studying level, the resting, suicide, the immediate after-life experience, the guidance and many many more that Mr. VP described. My dad recently died and we talked with him too several times after his death. Dad described feelings and "places" to us too. His descriptions coincided with the book's. I was struck, comforted and amazed. Who knows?
Rating: Summary: Daddy, I Know That You Are OK Now & Will Be With Me Always! Review: I had never heard of James Van Praagh until I watched the made-for-TV movie "Living With The Dead" starring Ted Danson. (By the way, Ted did an excellent job playing James.) I was astounded by James' ability to actually see and hear the dead. The movie told his story in such an honest and straight forward way, I was an immediate believer! When I saw "The Sixth Sense", I did not come out of the theatre the slightest bit convinced that anyone could actually see and hear the dead and felt the movie was done purely for our amusement. After seeing the movie about James, I felt spiritually touched and enlightened about many things. Unfortunately, a week after the movie aired, my father (who had been suffering with pancreatitis, emphysema, and a variety of other ailments for a number of years) passed away. I am 43 years old and this was my first death experience of an "immediate" family member. Even though my father had been in and out of hospitals most of his life and I thought I had prepared myself for his inevitable death, I was devastated. My mother stood helplessly by his bed and watched him spend his last 15 minutes leaving this life and entering the next. Then, I got the phone call from her that I had been dreading for all these years while I was at work...my father was gone. A few days after the funeral and burial, my mind went back to the movie about James and I remembered that there was a commercial break that aired which said the movie was based on a book called "Talking To Heaven". I went out and got a copy of the book. All I can say is that it eased the grief and pain I was feeling about the loss of my father tremendously. The book provided "proof" via James' encounters with the spirit world that I had only lost my father in the physical sense...I could no longer see, touch, or hear him. I am now convinced that he "is" with me in spirit...just like God (who I can't see either but have always felt His presence). My only disappointment with the book is that it gives the reader absolutely no way to contact James, even just to say "thank you". If anyone out there knows of any way to communicate with James, please let me know. If I'm really lucky, maybe James will read this and reach out himself.
