Rating: Summary: Compelling Review: Of Mice and men is one of the most beautiful stories about friendship. The story is about two Americans. The thoughts and actions of the two southern are made open for the reader to enjoy and judge. The favorite character in the book is Lenny. He came out in the story as and was innocent person with a mental defect. It reminded me somehow of Dostoyevsky's THE IDIOT. The amazing thing about this book is that not a lot of books are based on such unique characters. Another attractive aspect of Lenny is his physical strength and hardworking nature. Yet, despite his meek nature, he was dangerous in the sense that he even killed a woman out of fear. Steinbeck successfully created a philosophical twist to life through this story by bringing to life strong but vulnerable characters that we all can relate to. Rating: Summary: Ellen's Of Mice and Men Review Review: Of Mice and Men was the first real novel I've ever read. It had awesome charaters, that I believe fit into the time period well. I thiknk Steinbeck recreated the life, and living condiotions of migrant workers very well. He paints the picture of the average man going from job to job without anyone permanent in his life well. Not to mention that he makes the main charaters not fit into this average sterio-type. That makes the book even more complex and proves yet again how well it's written. Steinbeck shows with words how hard being a migrant worker really is. Such as when George and Lennie first come to the ranch all the guys think it's really awesome that they travel together, and always have a friend. Being a migrant worker doesn't really sound like it would be that hard until you really think about it. Steinbeck brings out all the small details that makes being a migrant worker hard. The charaters in the book Of Mice and Men were made perfectly. Making complex charaters such as Curley's wife and Silm would be hard enough, but then making them all fit together like a perfectly created jigsaw puzzle is almost impossible. I would say it's impossible but Steinbeck managed to make it work flawlessly. The best part about Steinbeck's charaters were that they were totally believable. Curley's wife for instance its 100% true. Girls still marry just to get away from their family or to have more money instead of love. She seems like the perfect person to be married to a guy like Curley. The dialect also helped push the books factually. I mean the only reading material was an old magazine that an old worker had left. They only kept it because it had a letter to the editor that someone they knew had written. This book is important for young adults to read because of it's lesson. It's also important to read because it shows that racism is still alive, but has gone down a lot. Some of the things they do to Crooks is definitely acceptable today. What I took as the lesson of the book was that you need to stop things happily, but sooner. Such as in the end of the book when George painted the picture of the farm and the rabbits for Lennie before killing him. It's better that way because Lennie would have been scared and not died peacfully if the other guys killed him.
Rating: Summary: Quite a book Review: Overall, John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men is really a good book. Even though it's rather short, it delivers its message quite well. The book opens with George and Lennie near the Salinas River south of Soledad, California. Lennie is a big, loveable guy who isn't very smart, but is easily pleased. Lennie loves to stroke soft things, and has a mouse in his hands that he accidentally killed by petting it too hard. Lennie's portrayal is extremely sympathetic and sentimental, but I couldn't help but like him, regardless of his flaws. George is the little man behind Lennie; he acts as the big man's brain in guiding him and keeping him out of trouble. The two travel and work together and have a friendship unlike anything most other characters in the novel have ever experienced. The book really got me to feel like I knew the characters, especially Lennie, and to pity them. The underlying theme of man's innate loneliness and his need for companionship is a bit dark and pessimistic for my taste, but is delivered tactfully with the repeated story of George and Lennie's farm where Lennie will be able to tend rabbits while the two live off the fatta the lan' offers hope so the book can be easily stomached by someone with a more optimistic worldview. All things considered, I would definitely recommend this book for everyone to read; the ideas behind it should be considered by all.
Rating: Summary: Great book Review: Reading the book Of Men and Mice was a very interesting. The novel catches the reader once they open the book. Personally I have nothing in common with the characters from the story. While reading this story I became very interested in the Great depression and the migrant workers having a hard time trying to live. To anyone who wants to read a fictional story based on the Great Depression they should go and read Of Mice and Men. This novel isn't just about the depression its about two people who are total opposites and stick together to find jobs because they don't have any one else to be with. The book has a lot of events that happen all because one of the two men is very slow, so neither of them could keep a job long enough to save money. Even though you might not interested in reading stories on the Depression you should still read this novel because the events in the story will make you want to read this book. This book shows a lot of feelings that the two men show to each other. They show love and friendship. This story will be very interesting whether your young or old, this book is for everyone.
Rating: Summary: Great Book Review: Sig S. Of Mice and Men was the first novel that I have ever read. I think that Steinbeck did a great job with the setting of the book. I could tell that the novel took place in the 1930's and that it was during the Great Depression. I think that the characters were developed very well. Steinbeck really did a great job with the descriptions of the characters and their dialect. He did an awesome job with the conversations between the characters as well. They seemed to describe themselves without him having to go into great detail. I think that this book is a good book for young adults to read because it teaches a lot of lessons. It teaches the reader that it is always good to have a friend with you, it is important to be careful with whatever your doing, and it teaches you to never give up on your dreams. This book has a lot of racism, discrimination, and has a lot of words that would not be suitable for younger kids.
Rating: Summary: Of Mice and Men Sean Review: Steinback did a great job of giving you a feel of the 1930's but with the migrant workers, but he could of made it more noticable that Lennie and George were migrant workers. He made it seem that they kind of werent that they were just running away from a long time job. He explained the caracters really well they were all different and unique. The best caracter is Lennie, Stienback made him stupid but loyal to his friends but also a little crazy. This plugged into the book very well "it was like the heart of the book." This is a ok, book for young teenagers to read it gives them an understanding of this time period and how people lived in that time. And it explains racism really good with his characters and it show how bad it makes people feel. This was a good book but it wasn't my style.
Rating: Summary: Michael Review: Steinback showed the way of life for many Americnas at that time. To find work at all was hard. The work was harder. He gave me a feel for what they were going through. Steinbeck's charters are easy to believe and had you wanting them to accoplish their dream. Charaters use wouds from back then like sulleny and snooker and shows how some people were treated different. Rasism was much worse back then. One of the African American characters is treated much worse than he would be today. This novel isn't action filled. Instead it has great ideas and for certain readers this could easily become one of their favorite books. I enjoyed it and it had a strong ending. The main character has to make a desision whether his best freind should live or die. I think 8th grade and up could enjoy this book. It shows how bad racim was back them.
Rating: Summary: Steinbeck is a national treasure--treasure this book Review: Steinbeck was known for writing thick books, however, Of Mice and Men was one of the thinnest of his great works and one of the best. An unlikely friendship between two men, a small, intelligent man and a powerfully built mentally handicapped man sets the scene for a drama that includes several conflicts: man against man, especially as the two friends find themselves unaccepted by the society they live in from day to day & man against himself. The story is fast paced and filled with physical and emotional details that allow you to see why the story ended so dramatically. I think the ending is one of the most poignant parts of the book. Rating: Summary: Of Mice and Men a review by Maia Review: Steinbeck's recreation of the state of migrant workers of the nineteen thirtys and the social issues surrounding such men, is a must read for young adults. Is this book to harsh for young adult readers? It's racism may be offensive to many and the extreemly beleivable caracters may be repulsive, but as people in the world today are we not going to run into racism and repulsive attitudes? The lessons this book teaches about human nature and characters such as Lennie, are much like people and situations we may someday have to deal with. This book may give us some insite for how to deal with these things it is truely worth the time and energy to read this powerful book!
Rating: Summary: Caite Review: Stienbeck did a very good job in recreating the 1930's. He especially did a good job with the migrant workers. When Lennie and George had only two cans of beans, they carried bindles and work tickets, and how they were traveling to get to a new job really gave the reader a good example of how poor the migrant workers in this time really were, and how their lives were. Steinbeck had very good characters in the book, and they were characters that the readers could relate to. When Candy let Carlson kill his dog because it was old, he was giving up something he loved very much. That is something that readers can easily relate too. This is a very good book for younger adults to read because it addresses many different social issues. Discrimination is one of the very big issues in this book, and it is addressed extremely well by the author.
