Rating: Summary: Sabriel Review: Sabriel is set in a world created by Garth Nix that captures your attention, and never lets you go. From the mysterious beginning to the riveting ending, your eyes never want to leave the book, and putting it down is the hardest thing you'll ever do.
Rating: Summary: Calling for an Abhorsen, the Dead are here! Review: This is an awesome book. Sabriel battles the Dead from all levels of the Nine Gates. It is incredibly cool, as the rules of Necromancy and Charter Magic are amazing. This book absolutely transformed me, as few books do. A must read for all fantasy-lovers.
Rating: Summary: A Wonderful Read Review: I had picked up SABRIEL in the library before, and it sat in my room for three weeks gatehring dust. I looked at it often, of course, but I could never bring myself to get into it. The first 5 pages were somewhat boring, not eye-catching at all. And the book seemed to be so long! Read so many pages of boring-ness? Uh, forget about it! It was n't until a friend threatened to...[off]...me(har-har) that I read it. And after those 5 paes it DID indeed get muuuch better! In fact, I could barely bring myself to put it down. Why would I want to? There was constant action. Death, anticipation, romance (only a little you party poopers), hope and adventure. WHy wouldn't you want to read this book? And if you have no money to buy it, have no fear! I bet your library carries it! Hope I could help...
Rating: Summary: Dark Teen Fantasy At Its Best Review: Garth nix really knows how to write dark and engrossing novels that are very hard to put down. Sabriel may live in a seemingly ordinary school but she is really from another land. This place, sealed off from the rest of the world, was once a great and proud country where magic flowed through the air for the benefit of everyone. However it has now been reduced to a wasteland swarming with undead while the remaining inhabitants fear for their lives. Their only hope lies in Abhorsen, a man able to enter the world of the dead and seal the wondering souls. He also happens to be Sabriel's father. There's only one problem, he has vanished leaving Sabriel to embark on a desperate journey to find him. Joining her are the strange cat like being named Mogget and a young man named Touchstone who's past is shrouded in mystery. Together they must fight undead, find the secrets of The Charter, and save Abhorsen before it's too late. Be warned, this book is very dark and is full of necromancy and the undead but if you don't mind that then Sabriel is one fantasy novel that you will not easily forget.
Rating: Summary: If you love a great fantasy this is a perfect pick! Review: I enjoyed every page of this book! Sabriel by Garth Nix is a fantasy with a perfect blend of magic, action, and the slightest, tiny, minuscule touch of romance. Sabriel is a great female hero. The idea behind this book is spectacular and the vivid descriptions pull the reader into the novel. The characters are all developed amazingly well and I praise this work of Garth Nix, being a very novice writer myself. I have recently finished Lirael Sequel to Sabriel and am anxious for the release of Abhorsen. I hope that I will be able to wait until January before I explode with anticipation!
Rating: Summary: One of the Best Books Ever! Review: Sabriel is one of the best books of all time. It is a hypnotic and dazzling book that to me destroys the competition in the amazing fantasy catagory. This is a book that will stay with me and I will get the sequel as soon as possible.
Rating: Summary: Fiction that isn't formulaic or trite Review: This has to be one of the best fantasy stories ever written. Garth Nix weaves a world that is unique and believable (unlike 90%+ of other "fantasy" literature)that entraps the reader and makes you fall in love with the characters. The story moves a little slow to begin with, but soon picks up the pace and has you asking for more. With an ending that is both bitter and sweet, it will keep you turning till the last.I myself, am a bit of an purist and a snob when it comes to the genre of fantasy, and tend not to read any unless it us up to par with the classics. Sabriel definately falls under that umbrella and it will continue to be so. Sabriel is listed as a "Young Adult/Intermediate Reader" title in most, if not all stores, but it is an all ages book. I highly, higly reccomend this for fans of "fantasy" of all ages. Also read "Lirael" the sequel to Sabriel, as well as "Abhorsen" (when it is released in January). Lets give Garth Nix the recognition he deserves!
Rating: Summary: This book is great!! Review: I picked up this book at a book fair two years ago. I didn't know what it was about, but it looked interesting, so I decided to buy it. It only took me about a week to read, and I was blown away. Garth Nix has a wonderful way with language and imagery; you can picture the landscapes and the monsters alike. Likewise, I was thrilled to learn of the existence of not one but two sequals. This is a book that you don't want to be over, you get to the end and find yourself wanting more. It is an amazing read and one of my favorite books.
Rating: Summary: Simply Amazing Review: Sabriel is my favorite book I have ever read. Garth Nix is a genius in writing this amazing book about a young girl named Sabriel. I cannot wait until the third book in the series.
Rating: Summary: Sabriel: A Great Book! Review: The book "Sabriel", written by Garth Nix, is an excellent book. It is filled with adventure and mystery. Although the beginning is a bit slow to begin with, you must not give up on it, because after the beginning, the book slowly gets more exciting. If you are a reader with a short attention span, I suggest you not read this book. This book requires all of your attention in order to understand it; otherwise, I guarantee you that you will be lost and have absolutely no idea what the story is about. This book has an exciting plot, has good description of characters, and has great style. In addition to being a great book, the plot is also really good, but it is complicated. If you are a person that enjoys fantasy books, the Harry Potter books, or books by Phillip Pullman, you will probably like this book. It starts out introducing Sabriel's father, the Abhorsen. Everyone in the Old Kingdom and in Ancelstierre knows the Abhorsen, he or she is a necromancer (a person that raises the Dead), but the Abhorsen is not a "normal" necromancer. The Abhorsen, instead of raising the Dead, puts the Dead to rest. When one Abhorsen dies, the Abhorsen-in-waiting must take over. The Abhorsen is a very respectable figure in the towns and villages in the book. Anyway, the book starts out with Sabriel being born, but she was upposed to be dead. The Abhorsen pulls her spirit back to her body, so she can live and be the next Abhorsen when he dies. That's the prologue. Then, 18 years after Sabriel is born, she graduates form her boarding school, Wyverly College. In those 18 years, the Abhorsen has taught her all about necromancy, so that she can prepare to be the next Abhorsen. Sabriel now knows a great deal of necromancy, (she's practically memorized the Book of the Dead), and is also good at Charter Magic. One night, when Sabriel is waiting for a visit from her father, (he only come twice a year, on Mid Summer and Mid Winter) she realizes that something must be wrong, because the Abhorsen does not come. So she sets off to find out what has happened to her father. Before she sets off on her journey, her father's spirit mysteriously comes to her and quickly shoves a sack into Sabriel's hands, then is immediately sucked into a nearby river. Inside the sack, there are 7 bells and the Abhorsen's sword. The 7 bells are necessary for a necromancer. They each have different purposes and they help the Abhorsen rest the Dead. The Abhorsen's sword is necessary as well, she can fight off any spirit that is weak and doesn't need any bells to deal with. Naturally, Sabriel wonders why her father handed this sack to her. That's the beginning of the first part of the plot. If you want to know what happens next, you'll just have to read the book yourself! Another thing that I enjoyed about this book was the way the author described the characters. I think that is one of the greatest things about this book; the author gives very vivid descriptions on each and every one of the characters. He does it so well that you can practically picture the characters in your mind. For example, here are some of his descriptions..."The Abhorsen revealed his face that looked like he had taken paths far from sunlight, for his skin was a deathly white. His paper white face drew back from his equally white teeth. Sabriel was as deathly white as her father, with her night black hair, fashionably bobbed, hanging slightly over her face".... Isn't that described with great detail? That's one of the things that I really like about this book. Not only does the book have an awesome plot and good character description, it also has excellent writing style. The author seems to combine both mystery and adventure into this book. A good combination, if you ask me. He writes it almost like a mystery book, but weaves action and adventure into it as well. This is another reason why you should definitely read this book. In conclusion, a good plot, excellent character description, and nice writing style mainly make up this book. At first when I picked up this book it looked a little overwhelming to me, but once I got into the story, my opinion changed. I highly recommend that you read this book. If you do read this book and finish it, I suggest the sequel to it, "Lirael". It is just as exciting as "Sabriel". I hope that you will have fun reading "Sabriel", as I did.
