Rating: Summary: GIRL POWER!!!!!!!!!! Review: I originly read this story, because I lost a bet with a friend, and she got to chose a book for me to read -- with out complaining.I thought that it would be hard and that the book was terrible, but I was REALLY REALLY wrong. The story was really good. A little confusing at some parts, like when Sabrail travels into the realm of the Dead, and uses bells (I think!) to bring the dead back to life. But it's a really good adventure and fantasy book. The main character, Sabrial is really interesting, and goes through a lot in the book, from saving people, to going into the realm of the dead to do so. Her cat, Mogget, that helps her around abit if really funny and cool. And her friend Touchstone (weird name, I know!) is kind of wimpy, but, hey, the more girl power, the better. All together, this is a really good book, and if your looking for a good read, this is definatly it.
Rating: Summary: Sabriel Review: This is probably one of the best books i have ever read. My daughter bought it and told me i HAD to read it, grudgingly i obliged, fantasy is not one of my favorite things to read. I would highly reccomend this book to anyone over 12, or someone with a higher reading level, it is deffinatly hard to follow, but well worth the struggle!
Rating: Summary: Interesting world, so so characters Review: Sabriel is the daughter of Abhorsen, a famous necromancer, but her father goes missing and the only place she can find him is in the Old Kingdom. The Old Kingdom is not a friendly place however, the dead roam free and magic is the only way to survive. But how is a girl who just finished school suppose to track down her father in such a place? Even with the help of Mogget, a cat who is more then he appears, and Touchstone, a freshly revived swordsman and mage, the rescue mission still won't be smooth sailing. Something dead and powerful is after Sabriel and she must become an even greater necromancer than her father if she hopes to survive. I adored the setting and magic system. The necromancy aspect in this book is the most interesting I've ever read about. The engrossing, fast paced plot makes this book a real page turner. This could have easily been a five star book if the characters had been more interesting. There was very little character development and what little there was came across as cold. Still, I probably will read some other books in this series, if only for the rich world that Garth Nix has created.
Rating: Summary: this is the only one worth buying out of them all Review: and i havent even read the third one yet! this book kept me reading and i loved it.. i was so excited when i saw the second one...till i started read that one! i hated the new charactar. Sabriel was much better. i kept hoping he would go back to her, but i never found that part in the second book(of course i didnt finish it so) but dont miss out on reading sabriel. its really good.
Rating: Summary: Great book! Review: Sabriel was a great book about a young girl who happens to be a necromancer. Necromancers are people that use magic involved with the dead, and they are usually evil. However, Sabriel is a good necromancer, who instead of bringing people out of the dead to follow her commands, puts them back into the dead, so that they can't do any more evil. Sabriel goes through an exciting adventure, after a certain undead creature in the book, and grows during the book as well. The book was very well written, and kept me turning pages well into the night.
Rating: Summary: Beautiful Imagery Review: I first read Sabriel when I was 12 and I remember loving it enough to read it again. When Lireal (the sequel) came out, I read Sabriel again (age 17 now). The novel was still the fresh, exciting, and enthralling book I first read five years ago! Garth Nix is simply masterful in creating the world Sabriel lives in - a seemingly modern, timeless country complete with cars and ordinary people right next to an old-world, magic-filled country filled with monsters, undead, and villages. You actually believe that these places can exist! Nix's many details and background information don't overwhelm the main story of Sabriel's hero's journey, either. I wish this book could be made into a movie, a la Lord of the Rings. Although Nix is not on the same scale as Tolkien, the details and story are still perfect for the silver screen. The whole time I was reading this novel, I imagined the beautiful imagery in the style of Japanese fantasy video game images (leaning towards Square's style) and the stark realism of movies. Did that make sense...? Just read it! If you don't, you're really missing out.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful read for fantasy lovers Review: This book brought back all of the joy of reading a good fantasy novel. The heroine of the book, Sabriel, is a strong character that gives this book a good base. Magic and mystery abound along with a love plot that is subtle enought that it does not cover up the strong fantasy roots. This book was truly enjoyable and should be read by all fantasy lovers.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful! Review: This book is wonderful. It is capturing...a true page turner. If you buy this one you will be caught in the series, so be prepared to buy Lireal (probably spelled wrong), and Abhorson (probably spelled wrong too). The book is creative and interesting, unlike some books in which the writers become too interested in the details and forget to create a capturing storyline. Descriptions are good, but stay simple, telling you just enough to give you a visual, and the storyline is very exciting. I think that any fantasy reader will enjoy this book.
Rating: Summary: A Most Intriguing Book Review: Sabriel is one of the most different books I have read in terms of concept. Sabriel is the main character, and she becomes the Abhorsen (a special kind of necromancer) after her father is killed in Death (a fast flowing river with nine gates in which dead spirits travel to die) by one of the Greater Dead (a type of dead who can withstand and even come out of Death), Kerrigor. She meets characters like Mogget and Touchstone, who aid her on her quest to once and for all kill Kerrigor. The most interesting aspect of the book, and what set it apart from other fantasy, was the necromancy. Sabriel is a necromancer who "kills" the dead using seven magic bells with different powers. She literally goes into Death, and walks through the different gates to lay the dead to rest. At the end of Death is the Ninth gate, and once a spirit passes through it they are permenantly dead. I gave this book a rating of 4 stars because, though I really liked it, I found that the plot was kind of predictable. Also, the author just leaps into the plot without giving an explanation of some things, like Charter Magic. However, I found that after I read the book I had a very thorough understanding of all of it, so for me long explanations weren't necessary. A last problem I had with it, though it isn't a very serious problem, was that I wish the author had taken the reader all the way to the ninth gate. We only get to see the fourth or fifth. All in all, I would definately recommend this book to a fantasy lover, and I would also recommend the sequal, Lirael.
Rating: Summary: Better Than The Good Book Review: The world created by Garth Nix is both creative and captivating. From the beginning with a mysterious stranger, to the end with a heroic final missive from Sabriel, tearing your eyes away from the page is the hardest thing you'll ever do!
