Summary: One of my favorites
Review: "Dave Barry turns 50" and "Getting Old Sucks" are my favorite books about getting older. Read them while you still have the visual acuity and functioning synapses!

Rating: 2 stars
Summary: Seemed to drag on, unlike his column
Review: A big fan of Dave Barry (I have most of his books), this book went in a different direction. Mr. Barry did not enlighten us with his normal wit, instead what we got was a year by year, until 1974,summary of what happened, along with some commentary. That's why we have history books. Dave's views of boogers and exploding toilets are hillarious and will continue to so as long as he sticks to his column.

Summary: A short disappointment
Review: Another in the line of Dave Barry MUST publish or fade away! This book is mainly developed along the lines of a Rand-McNally atlas history of three decades. Short, compressed statements of very little of interest or humour.

This book fails dismally as a work of humour, as a work of originality, or as a work of fun. Barry goes so far as to admit in the work he has largely borrowed the chronology from another's book.

A thorough waste of time!

Perhaps, he should take the hint from the cover photograph, and really retire.

Summary: Funny as Usual, Barry
Review: Barry is my ideal man. Funny and intelligent and never losing his sense of humor the older he gets. I have kept up with his career since day 1 and am glad to add this latest edition of laughs to my library. He can make you "want" to turn 50!

Summary: Dave Barry strikes again
Review: Classic Barry iconoclastic humor. A real hoot for any baby-boomer. Chock full of nostalgic remembrances mixed in with a little 60's philosophy. I chuckled through nearly every page. Would also make a great birthday gift.

Summary: Both the humorous and the serious parts struck a chord.
Review: Dave Barry doesn't mention his actual birthday, but from some of the clues in the text, he is just about exactly one year younger than I am. Thus, I can relate to most of what he is talking about throughout. There was more serious commentary than I am used to seeing in his books, but it was very appropriate and enjoyable. Even though I did serve in the U.S. Army from 1967-1970, though not in Vietnam, I was not offended by the section when he talks about his avoiding military service. I know there will be some people who will think of him as a draft dodger, but that wasn't a problem for me. Instead, it was interesting to see a little bit of the person behind the ever-present wisecracks. I don't know if many other folks would compare Dave Barry to the late Lewis Grizzard, but I am a big fan of both. Dave doesn't show us quite as much of his serious side as Lewis did, but since Lewis was also a boomer, I think they both have some things in common. I don't know if they ever met or if they were friends, but for some reason there were aspects of this book that made me think of Lewis Grizzard. Dave Barry may or may not take that as a compliment, but it is intended to be one. I thought this was a very good book, the only mild criticisms I have are mentioned in previous reviews, that is the short length and the ending of the year-by-year review in 1974. I can hardly wait till 2007 or 2008 when we will see "Dave Barry Turns 60."

Summary: His best book in years!
Review: Don't get me wrong, I love Dave. I've met the man, and he's as funny in person as he is in print. But sometimes, Dave can misfire, as he has in the past...but this book is his best by far of the last few. It's so good, it's laugh-out-loud funny is many parts. Made me want to read it aloud to anyone who would listen!

Rating: 1 stars
Summary: Not one of his better books; for Boomers only
Review: I don't mind when Dave Barry writes serious material, but unless you're a Boomer, you're probably going to find this book just plain dull.
