Rating: Summary: Book to Read and Reread Review: Author's writing style is engaging. I enjoyed connecting, in a variety of ways, with each of the heroes. The book provides a sense of the history, the struggle, and the twists and turns to finding your true path. It is too easy to assume that it is a straight line. I know I will refer to the stories and lifelines for wisdom and encouragement throughout my life. Well done.
Rating: Summary: Inspiring stories but little guidance Review: Quite disappointing; while a few of the biographical anecdotes are inspiring, the author offers little guidance or "how to." Additionally, the narrative thread is constantly being broken with quotations. After a few pages, I found this practice very annoying. I think the author had a good magazine article or motivational speech here but tried to turn it into a "bestseller" instead.
Rating: Summary: Making money on people's life stories & collection of quotes Review: Mark Albion is a great speaker. I heard him live. Being in a business school, his book was high on students' list. But I regret buying it. So what's the big deal in writing and editing other people's life stories. The chapters in the book are based on few people's stories, where author wrote their life's turing point events step by step. Author did not even do in depth anaylsis of these stories. Additionally, each page is full with quotes from different people/books, some being absolutely irrelevant to the topic.
Rating: Summary: Exactly What You Need If You Are Not TRUELY Happy At Your Jo Review: This book speaks right to me. I have a Marketing Degree and an MBA but have not enjoyed the positions with meaningless, overly bureaucratic, profit-only companies these degrees tend to get you into. If you want to start living your life or find what you actually might enjoy doing, this is a great resource for inspiration. Show me a man who enjoys, has a passion for, and believes in what he does, and I'll show you a man who doesn't work for a living. Great book, good to know I am not alone in this search for a soul-fulfilling life, not slow death in a soul-less job.
Rating: Summary: If you believe life will present all the opportunities Review: If you believe in taking things as they come, that opportunities will present themselves, then this book may provide inspiration. If you have looked for opportunities and still haven't found the right work, this book will be a major disappointment as no insights are offered for this scenario. Yes, sometimes life does provide one with opportunities, but more often on needs to dig up those opportunities on one's own. This book will not guide you down this path.
Rating: Summary: Good book for well-to-do's Review: I struggle with how to word my review of this book. It has a number of quotes and a number of inspiring ideas - and at the same time I don't think it is written for the masses. For the most part it is written for those who have the credentials like a Stanford degree or worked or were affiliated with Harvard, etc. To be able to have those types of opportunities one most likely had influential contacts/relatives or be exceptionally brilliant. I don't want to fault any of those things, but passing this book off as if it will help any who read it is a little much in my opinion. I think it is great that the people in this book are making a difference, but (in my mind) they did it because they had the credentials and support that many in the world do not have. Many people are fighting to keep their heads above water financially, and just quitting their jobs to "make a life" is not a tenable situation. As another reviewer stated, I too am glad I got this out of the library, cause it isn't a book that I would pass on to friends/family.
Rating: Summary: An Inspiring Contribution to Many People's Lives Review: I found this book MAKING A LIFE by Mark Albion inspired me because I was reading about real people who were making meaningful changes in their lives and were not just waiting around for opportunities to find them. His story about his loving relationship with his mother and his pride in her success in her business despite the ravages of her bout with cancer portrayed his humanness. I was touched and so admired both of them. For many people who are at a crossroads in their lives., Mark opens doors of opportunity to examine their careers and inspires them to expand into new territories. As a result, they, by the examples he writes about, are able to further make a new contribution to a society which is in need of human contact and attention. I kept reading and kept marveling at the way each story he told unfolded to show the reader how it has been done by others who achieved success, financially and spiritually. I respect the people about whom he wrote and respect the people whose quotations he so frequently used to reinforce his stories. I have reread the book because it was so interesting to me. Most of all the author confirmed for me that the changes that I have made in my own life have all been worthwhile. I have made a life and a living and have made a contribution to society. I have recommended the book to many of my friends. Thank you, Mark Albion, for bringing truly meaningful life stories to me and to thousands of readers all over the world. Good Luck in all your present and future endeavors. Your book is your contribution to my life and I will always remember it.
Rating: Summary: Making a Life, Making a Living: Reclaiming Your Passion Review: I found this book spoke to what had been in my heart for the past 10 years...Mainly, what am I doing and what do I REALLY want to do? It validated the odessy I had just taken on, which was not to consider yet one more job until I really got back to who I am and how I am going to do what I love and therefore make a meaningful contribution. This author has done that, quite successfully and found others who did the same thing. It is one of the most inspiring books I have read in a long time! I have recommended it to at least a dozen of my baby boomer friends who know they've gotten off the track and are determined to make a better life by finding their passion and pursuing it. Thanks Mark Albion!
Rating: Summary: A Throught Provoking Read Review: Mark Albion's book provides very useful, down-to-earth stories on how people can simultaneously follow their inner compass and accomplish good deeds, and live comfortably financially. Nothing was guaranteed for those who finally broke through and reached their goals. They only had their vision and sense of values to guide them, and of course high levels of commitment and tenaciousness. Albion is really telling the story in today's terms that has been common to all successful people, but he tells it compellingly, and in vivid terms that modern, busy people can relate to. It's a must read.
Rating: Summary: When Money (or Even Book Sales!) is Not Enough Review: Unexpectedly, "Making a Life" made the New York TimesBusiness Best Seller List its first month out. Many e-mails haveensued. Through them you have taught me more about the fundamental message of "Making a Life" than I ever learned writing the book and living its story. I hear your message that money is not enough, that life is not about things, but about relationships, and that those of you who have found true inner peace have not focused on "book sales" but on personal intimacy and impact. I am still learning and, with your help, look forward to the voyage ahead together. END
