Rating: Summary: Fascinating inspiration Review: This book is truly awesome. It's a genuine look into the life of a well established writer, who suffers and struggles just as much as the next guy/gal. Anne has a hillarious sense of humor and discusses her trials and triumphs in a amazingly wonderful fashion. This book is just as marvelous as Stephen King's book about writing, A MEMOIR ON WRITING. Read them both, you won't regret it!
Rating: Summary: The Power of Profanity Review: A couple of the reviewers are right: if you find yourself so disturbed by a smattering of apt and appropriate profanity that you give it veto over all other considerations, then leave this book alone, please. If, however, you care about trivialities like inspiration, humor, manifest humanity, a tour through painful experience, and genuine information, you might want to take a look. What would Jesus do?
Rating: Summary: Expert writing advice with a funny and easy style. Review: This author is a new find for me, but I will surely read much more of her. She is fabulously funny, incredibly informative, and absolutely generous with her thoughts and feelings and expertise on writing. The book warmed me, and made me feel that I could continue my writing with a stronger and better perspective. For aspiring writer's everywhere, and for writers published and not, this book will take you on a journey and offer invaluable advice for your hard work. It will help you revive that natural urge to write and keep you plugging away at the keyboard during the very worst of slumps. You will also laugh with Anne Lamott, the author, who is hilarious and honest and very witty. The practical and real life advice will stay with you as you struggle to become the writer you already are.
Rating: Summary: A thrilling start on a cure for the all-pervasive BLOCK Review: I was given this wonderful little bit of insight by a friend, for Christmas. She knew I'd been suffering from the Block, and thought she'd help me out, with a journal and Lamott's book. I devoured every word the author had to offer - she did not advise me, did not look down on me from her high authorly pedestal, did not instruct me. She simply shared her experiences, her thoughts on writing, and this is what writers love best. I was comforted by her willingness to express her anxiety as a writer, and identified with every problem to which she posed a solution. She offered a path that is best travelled in little steps, and did not give any general, cliche advice that is of no use. I strongly recommend this book to any writer, advanced or beginning, or in between, and to anyone whose soul has ever ached for frustration with their art
Rating: Summary: Brilliant, Superb, Engaging! Review: This is Annie Lamott's finest book so far - and worthwhile for ALL readers, regardless of whether they ever intend to write! Her poignant stories, heartfelt examples and hard-won experience shine through with compassion, encouragement and love. Reading this book is like being held in a warm embrace! Where else can you get love for ten bucks?
Rating: Summary: This book is perfect for the writer's frame of mind Review: Annie Lamott seems to have the knack for making the difficult seem easy. Her voice is clear and her ideas clearer. I have read this book over and over while trying to be a great writer before I leave high school. Any prospective writer should go through this book once, twice and again.
Rating: Summary: Hilarious and so true! Review: Anne Lamott is a master story teller. She pulls you into her struggle as a writer and her stories of teaching ethusiastic young writers by encouraging, "shitty first drafts." Her wit and humor put you at ease while telling it straight about writing and life. I would recommend this book even if you aren't interested in writing. Thank you Anne!
Rating: Summary: Funny and Informative Review: In three words: Really, delightful, work. Anne Lamott is a worker. I once imagined that I could sit down and just write a book in six months or less. HA! Oh well, stranger things have happened! Anne Lamott describes how to make a book happen, and she makes it fun. Her prose is whimsical. She's unique and inspiring. I can't say that the work is so inspiring as is her personal story. She reminds the writer that if we lose our muse, it's time to make a commitment and sit down and write anway. In case you read this, Anne---"retail therapy" is something I can relate to.
Rating: Summary: Why the vulgarity? Review: Anne Lamott captures all the truths of a writer's life with personal examples and good advice. I have only one question: why the vulgarity? For a writer who has succeeded at her craft and is confident enough to tell others how to accomplish what she has achieved, she ought to be able to use less repulsive words. She may have the "take me as I am" mentality, but she lost my respect when she described her own first drafts (and others) as "s......y." Use a thesaurus next time.
Rating: Summary: Necessary for any writing career... Review: I first heard about this book from members of my writers group, and I now agree that this is an essential book for any writer. Lamott is funny, irreverent and reassuring for any writer -- beginning or experienced, amateur or professional. During a particularly dark time in my own writing, I found myself laughing and crying at the same time with recognition. It helps to know your problems are universal to all writers. It helps that someone can see the humor when you can't. I go back to this book again and again whenever I need a reminder, and I buy copies for all of my writing friends.
