Rating: Summary: Death on the Nile Review: ....READ THIS BOOK! I've read it about ten times so far, and I never get tired of it. I truely believe that it is Christie's best - some of her novels tend to swagger off a little, and lose interest. Not this one. The main characters Jackie, Simon, and Linnet are extremely well developed, and the seemingly impossible situation of the murder kept me guessing until the end (god that sounds cliched...:)) My only minor qualm is that it seems like Christie tried to cram too many criminals on one boat - a jewelry thief, a mob hitman, a kleptomaniac, a murderer, etc. But, that's too minor to dock off a star. Incidentally, it has also been made into a very good movie with with Peter Ustinov (?) as Poirot and Mia Farrow as Jackie.READ THIS BOOK! YOU WON'T BE SORRY!
Rating: Summary: Sail the Nile with Poirot Review: A local bookstore recently had a huge sale of budget Agatha Christie novels, so, being the mystery lover that I am(how many people do you know have read all the Sherlock Holmes stories?) , I promptly purchased a number of them By far my favorite(so far-she wrote over sixty books and I have only read fourteen) one has been Death On The Nile. Differently from most death investigation books, the victim is alive and well through a good half of the book, which mades its reading a bit dull at first. All of a sudden, someone is murdered and Hercule Poirot, who is fortunately on vacation in Egypt at the time, takes the helm and then the bodies start piling up. The novel was one of Agatha Christie's early ones, written around 1934(barely six years after Mysterious Affair at Styles, her first effort and first appearance of the detective). In reading the book, one feels that the author had finally found her style by then - before that, Poirot seemed to be merely a parody of Doyle's creation - which had become a tradition at the time. Colonel Hastings is not present, and this time the story is told in a third-person point of view, which in my opinion enriches the plot and gives the author more independence into the characters' minds. After I finished it, I found myself reading another Christie book, "Lord Edgeware Dies", which as the book written immediately before "Death on The Nile". It is obvious that Mrs Christie used the same technique there, and I wound up finding out the murderer before its ending, since "Death on The Nile" is so much cleverly written. A must read, especially for anyone who loves Agatha Christie
Rating: Summary: Classic Christie Review: A timeless Poirot mystery that delivers all of the elements which make Agatha Christie so enduringly popular. As always, the characters, the setting, the plot, and the grey cells combine for top notch storytelling. When it comes to this genre, very few authors are in the same league. I have read all of the Poirot books many times over, and this one ranks with the best.
Rating: Summary: Incredibly Addictive Reading Review: After reading for the first 100 pages and no murder having occurred, I was wondering if I was reading Agatha Christie or not. Alas, you can relax, a murder was to occur eventually. Having just read Murder on the Orient Express just prior to Death on the Nile, I found the two strikingly similar when juxtaposed together: both involve murders on a boxcar traveling with an eclectic, if not bizarre, group of travelers...and of course the intrepid Hercule Poirot to solve the mystery and make the world right. Good stuff.
"But thank God, there is happiness in the world."
- Mrs. Allerton at the finale
Rating: Summary: At her best Review: Agatha Christie at her best! Having read a lot of her books, this is truly one of her best, good plot, great locations, Hercule Poirot at his finest. A must read after all these years.
Rating: Summary: A Sinister Shipboard Slaying Review: Agatha Christie wrote "Death on the Nile" in 1937, one year after "Murder in Mesopotamia", and to all appearances "Death on the Nile" was intended as a prequel to "Murder in Mesopotamia", which itself was a prequel to the 1934 classic "Murder in the Orient Express". The three stories make up a satisfying trilogy of mysteries as Poirot tours the Near East finding murder everywhere he goes. All three of the stories follow Christie's tried-and-true formula: She introduces the cast of suspects, gives each of them a dark secret and a motive to lie, and piles up the circumstances in such a way that the flying fickle finger of suspicion points to every one of them at some time or another. She compounds the confusion by supplying false leads and deliberatly glossing over hot clues. In each case Poirot holds his cards close to his vest, tantalizes the reader/listener with cryptic comments, and finds the most inconsequential-appearing facts to be highly significant. Eventually Poirot airs everyone's dirty laundry, explains his chain of deductive reasoning, reconstructs the crime in all its improbable complexity, and gets a confession. Of the three stories, however, "Death on the Nile" presents the most feasible modus operandi for the murder, as well as the most likely motivation for murder. This is a roudabout way of saying that "Death on the Nile" is the most realistic of the three. I listened to the BBC production of "Death on the Nile" and found it the easiest of the three stories for the listener to follow. For "Orient Express" and "Mesopotamia" you need a flow chart to keep up with all the twists, turns, and complexities of the plot. All in all, "Death on the Nile" provides the listener with an entertaining, satisfying story of murder and mayhem.
Rating: Summary: Suchet the perfect narrator for this recording Review: Agatha Christie's <Death on the Nile> first appeared as a novel in 1937, later as a play by the author, and finally as a fairly successful film with Peter Ustinov as Poirot. Now it has reached its fourth incarnation, so to speak, as an audio book from Audio Partners in which the complete text is acted out (rather than simply read) by none other than David Suchet. This British actor (who once played Inspector Japp, by the way, in one of the updated Poirot films!) has become completely associated with the role through the PBS series, which is now available from Acorn Media, and is by far the most logical choice for reader. He quite nicely manages a new voice for each character and (no surprise) his Poirot voice is the most successful. The story is a variation of the English manor house murder novel. A manageably small group of people is on board a ship taking an Egyptian cruise and one of the party is murdered. While almost every character has excellent motive, the one with the strongest is the only one who definitely could not have done it. The rest, of course, could have--in true Christie fashion--and two other murders take place before Poirot gets his little gray cells to see the case from a completely novel but correct angle. One device I must admit annoys me is the device of having Poirot overhear a private conversation early in the story; but here it does little harm to credibility and is just part of the fun. So we have a thumping good mystery, interesting characters, a supersleuth, and Suchet's superb reading to make this Audio Partners offering a very good choice.
Rating: Summary: Death on the Nile Review: Are you are in the mood for a thrilling book that you won't want to put down? Then I strongly recommend Death on the Nile, written by Agatha Christie, the best-selling author for mysteries. It was one of the most suspenseful stories I have ever read. Linnet Ridgeway, the victim, is wealthy, young, and beautiful. She is used to having her way, so when she falls in love with her best friend Jackie's fiancé (named Simon), trouble is in the air. Simon soon realizes that he loves Linnet more than Jackie, and marries her instead. On their honeymoon, a cruise on the Nile, Jackie is on board, and ready for revenge. So when Linnet is found dead in her bed one morning, it is obvious who did it. But it was impossible for Jackie to have killed her, since she had people with her the entire night. Hercule Poirot, the detective, has to find the answers to several questions to solve this mystery. Did an attempted murder that occurred earlier have anything to do with this one? Why did the murderer throw something overboard? Why is Linnet's business guardian so secretive about the forms he wants her to sign? Do Linnet's missing pearls have anything to do with it? He must use his intelligence, intuition, and interviewing skills to solve the crime. Can he prove who did it? This book was a little slow-moving before the murder was committed, but I liked it because of its challenging reading level, the exciting storyline, and the surprise ending.
