Rating: Summary: Another wonderful trip to the world of Father Tim. Review: As the wife of a pastor myself (for over 35 years) I have thoroughly enjoyed the Mitford books. The characters and situations are very realistic and I find myself identifying with so many of the situations that happen to Father Tim and Cynthia, good and bad. A wonderful series to enjoy over and over.
Rating: Summary: This book is incredible!!! Review: I loved this book just as much as the first 4. I was scared at first ebcause I didn't know how I would like Father Tim and Cynthia moving (if only for a little while) away from Mitford. I grew to enjoy Whitecap Island almost as much as I enjoyed Mitford! Those who haven't read it, never fear there is constsnt contact between Father Tim and his old parishoners. I don't really want Father Tim to stay in Whitecap, but if he did I'm sure I would love and enjoy the Mitford or Whitecap books. Jan Karon is a gifted author who can be sweet without being sappy and inspirational with out being preachy! BRAVO!!
Rating: Summary: The Tradition Continues Review: Truth be told, I don't like fiction, especially Southern, homespun fiction. But, against my better judgement I have developed quite an affection for Karon's books. They're warm and comforatble. No doubt she's hit on a formula with her followers and it continues in A New Song. I had a little trouble keeping up with the new array of characters on Whitecap but that was soon overcome as I got into the story. If you've read the other "Mitford" books you are already a Karon fan, if you have not give this one a try (if you like it, you'll want to read the others). If you use the Amazon.com reviews as a measurement of popularity, you'll see she either gets five stars or one--not much in between--and although most of the ratings are five stars, I think she deserves six!
Rating: Summary: Do yourself a favor and read any book that Jan Karon writes! Review: I just finished reading "A New Song", the fifth book in the Mitford Series. If you're not familiar with the Mitford series be sure to read the first four books beginning with "At Home in Mitford". Jan Karon's books are a pure delight! She writes the characters in a way that you feel you would like to meet these people. They are ordinary people with the same problems we all have. My friends who have read Jan Karon's books feel as I do. We start each book with great delight and anticipation and we are sorry when it ends. Since the main character "Father Tim" is in his sixties now, I don't suppose the "Mitford Series" can last forever. I trust Jan Karon to write other equally wonderful books and I look forward to them. I just hope she doesn't make me wait to long!
Rating: Summary: Another wonderful trip to North Carolina! Review: When I realized there were only a few days to go before I received my pre-ordered copy of A New Song, I re-read Jan Karon's first four installments in anticipation. I was not disappointed by this, her fifth, book. Whitecap is as quirky and unpredictable as Mitford, filled with as many wonderful and fascinating characters. The spirituality is uplifting without being saccarin sweet. Father Tim, Cynthia, Dooley and all the others feel like family, real people with everyday problems that the reader can't wait to see worked out and resolved. I dreaded reaching the last page, knowing it would be quite a while before there would be another trip to Mitford. I only hope that Ms. Karon lives forever to continue this marvelous and lovely saga of small town life.
Rating: Summary: Only disappointment-do not have another "Karon" to read! Review: This story of Fr. Tim & Cynthia's life in "retirement" contains all the feeling and wonderful characters of the original "Mitfords", with the added bonus of introducing them (and us) to another location and a host of new people. Jan Karon again got me wishing that her book would not end, yet I couldn't put it down and had to finish it quickly as I wanted to find out what happened. Her writing flows, her characters develop fully, her books are spiritual without being religious, good without being saccharin sweet and leave me wanting more. Please write another soon, as I can not wait to find out what happens w/ Dooley's family, his teenage "love life" and all the new and old characters we've met.
Rating: Summary: I loved it! Can't wait for number six! Review: I eagerly awaited for A New Song and wasn't dissappointed. I read it every chance I got until it was done and then wished I had more. Ms. Karon has a special way of making these down to earth and realistic characters so interesting and I would love to visit Mitford. I live in a small community in the north GA mountains and can relate to Mitford and it's characters. It's the best place in the world. I am eagerly awaiting Ms. Karon's next book!
Rating: Summary: A trip to Mitford soothes me Review: And this is my fifth, without even leaving home. A reaffirmation of faith, loving one another and hope for gentler times. This series was something I started by picking up a Library books on tape version, and I must admit to being a bit apprehensive about reading one for a change (though I'm a reader!). It's a wonderful trip, and I may have to enjoy it on tape as well. Can't recommend the tapes enough -- John McDonough might be "Captain Kangaroo" but he is also the perfect rector. A side trip to Mitford during my morning commute gives me a different perspective. A lovely gift to anyone, of any age.
Rating: Summary: Jan Karon is a gifted, inspirational author! Review: One of the best chapters that I have ever read in any book is found in A New Song. I loved the entire book, but the chapter entitled Mighty Waters, brought me such joy. Father Tim and company, are very real to me. Of course I've read all of the Mitford Saga books, but the latest one is the best. I do have a question....A line on page 102 refers to "crocodiles" sunning themselves. Could this be an error? Doesn't Ms. Karon mean alligators? I don't believe that we have crocodiles in North America. If anyone can answer this question, please do.
Rating: Summary: I loved this book Review: The fifth book in the series has Father Tim moving from Mitford, however, he is still in close contact with all of the characters. The new locale brings a whole new cast of characters who are just as endearing and quirky as the old. I can't wait for the next book.
