Summary: What I always didn't wanted to know about Prairie Dogs.
Review: What happened? Have been devoted Hillerman fan since the very beginning. I didn't really want to take a course in mammal biology, I prefer the old Chee and Leaphorn. Also getting tired of Chee persuing Janet. This book goes on and on don't know if I'll ever finish it. Which is a shame. I usually indulge myself with a full day of reading.

Summary: HILLERMAN CORNERED ME AGAIN--YEAH!
Review: I must say in the very opening that I couldn't be objective abut this latest novel set in the Four Corners because my dream of ten years finally came true when I drove 2,000 miles to visit the places Hillerman talks about in his novels. While there I read FIRST EAGLE as I camped. The magic of the land, the power of the stars entered my dreams. I felt the other-worldly lift of his prose, the romance of his characters and, yes, the fear of those damn plague-carrying fleas. When I made this trek to the land of the Hopi and Navajo, I also followed the route of the Cherokee Trail of Tears from Georgia to Oklahoma as I read WALKING THE TRAIL/ONE MAN'S JOURNEY ALONG THE CHEROKEE TRAIL OF TEARS. A remarkable read--Hillerman's endorsement is on the book cover and that's why I bought it---gave me chillbumps. Anyway, if you ever get the chance of a life time--go to the places talked about in these books. A wild and beautiful ride.

Summary: I'm a big fan of these novels but this one was tedious.
Review: Probably like any Hillerman fan I was looking forward to this next novel. I bought it right after I got back from yet another trip to the Southwest. I was soon let down. I found the book kind of tedious . It just didn't seem to unfold as naturally as previous novels. Of course it's always wonderful to meet our old friends but if this had been my first meeting with these people I might not have been so eager to get reaquainted with them. Be that as it may I'll be right there in line to buy the next novel.

Summary: Average, and publisher's copy editing horrible
Review: This book appears to have gone to press way too quickly, as the ending was a letdown, and the copy editing was horrible--and I'm no copy editor! After I found the first error, I kept looking for additional problems (which I found) and took the focus away from involving myself in the story. Example: When Chee is questioning Jano later in the novel, one of Jano's quotes was attributed to Kinsman. How do I know that it wasn't Kinsman? He'd been dead since nearly the beginning of the book! Overall, The First Eagle didn't have the depth others had had, but I would still recommend it to any Hillerman fan.

Summary: Still another great book for me to loan to my friends.
Review: Everything a reader wants except for a soft chair and a tall glass of tea. Suspence, action, expanding plot, deep character development, and of course it's a page turner. I read about 3 or 4 books a week and I really don't understand any of the critics comments. The only thing I've read this summer that compares to it in excitement was the new book, Alien Rapture by Brad Steiger which is the most outstanding book I've read in years. Ufortunately Tom Clancy's new book was a 2 star repeat of his past plots. Watch out Clancy, Hillerman is writing circles around you. Yes! Buy it.

Summary: Good, but could have benn better
Review: Slow to start and I did not care for the ending.

Summary: At least it was better than Talking God
Review: I was entertained by Hillerman's latest installment in the Navajo Tribal Police saga, but not overjoyed. This book is not up to Hillerman's usual standards. I thought the subplot about the plague and microbial resistance was repetitive and in the end, rather numbing. If you want to be scared silly of bacteria and viruses, read Hot Zone instead.

Unfortunately, I figured out the identity of the killer about halfway through the book, which left me annoyed that it took Chee and Leaphorn so long to get it right. I thought I had also figured out the motive for the killings, but I was off by a bit.. My potential motive was much more interesting.

The only tribal police novel I have liked less was Talking God. I would advise a new reader to start with any of the other older titles. Coyote Waits was wonderful, as was Skinwalkers and Listening Woman.

I can only hope the next Chee/Leaphorn novel will be a better read, with Chee finally getting past this thing with the annoying Ms. Pete (why can't she just stay in Washington?) and Leaphorn resolving some of his grief for Emma. These guys just wallow in the past. Here's a toast to the next Hillerman novel!

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Tony Hillerman's lead characters are magnificant
Review: Leaphorn and Chee are people you would like to know. Hillerman seems to just get better and better.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Wonderful-couldn't put it down!
Review: Once again, Chee and Leaphorn are brilliant together! The suspense starts from page 1 and doesn't let up until the last page. This, mixed with fascinating Navajo traditions and the beautiful scenery makes for a great read!

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Well worth reading.
Review: This may not be his best but as part of the continuing saga of Jim Chee and Joe Leaphorn it shouldn't disappoint Hillerman fans. I felt it was a little rushed. I've enjoyed the insights into the Navajo and Hopi cultures in previous books but they were meager in this book.

The book makes a big deal of Chee's recording a phone conversation -- it is illegal to put a wire tap on a phone line and record conversations of other people but, so far as I know, it isn't illegal to tape record phone conversations as long as one of the persons talking knows the recording is being made. Law enforcement agencies (Ex: 911 calls) and some businesses do it all the time. Usually they warn you but that is out of courtesy; you are more nicer to their people if you know the call is recorded; and not a requirement.
