Rating: Summary: a true joy to read! Review: The Christmas Shoes was a wonderful Christmas story that shows how precious life is, and how time and love are the greatest gifts we can give. This is the story of people focusing on what they think is important and that those whose focus is on family and friends are those who truley live a rich life, a life of no regrets. Those who focus on riches like career and finances to the detriment of family are never really fulfilled but continue to work endlessly to fill the unknown void in their lives. In The Christmas Shoes, peoples lives are changed by small acts of kindness that come back to them in unknown ways. This is a lovely tale, and yes it is a tear jerker, and this is meant in the most positive of ways. Truth is conveyed in a wonderful story and the beauty and honesty leads to a rush of emotion. This is a little book (129 fast pages!!) that is big on heart and soul, and a true joy to read!!
Rating: Summary: Couldn't put it down Review: The Christmas Shoes was the best Christmas book I have ever read. The characters were so life like that I felt like I knew them. I thought I would cry at the end of the book, but I started crying half way through and never stopped. It was a great story of hope and of Christ's love. I have recommended the book to everyone I know and I'm ordering several for Christmas gifts. You must read it!!!
Rating: Summary: Touching and Beautiful Review: This book follows the lives of two families. First we have Robert Layton. A lawyer who has completely lost sight of his family, his wife (Kate) and his two daughters (Hannah and Lily). His wife announces to him that they need a divorce right before Christmas because it "just isn't working."Next we have Nathan Andrews. A boy who's mother is dying of ovarian cancer. She very likely will die by Christmas. He wants to buy her something nice (a pair of Christmas shoes) so she looks pretty when she meets God. These two characters lives cross when Robert is standing behind Nathan in line and Nathan asks him for some money to pay for the shoes. That moment changes Robert's life and Nathan's life for the better. This is a wonderful touching book that everyone should read during the holidays. Or even in the middle of summer. It's an enjoyable read, that everyone will love.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful Christmas Story - MUST READ!! Review: This book is a great way to start the holiday season. Ms.VanLiere reminds us that the entire Christmas season is about the most amazing gift ever, not just piles of gifts under a tree. She eloquently challenges us to cherish the people around us more than things. I am giving this book as gifts to friends that I cherish this holiday season. Be sure to catch the TV movie on CBS - December 1st. I hear that it is slightly different from the book, so read the book first. Rob Lowe is starring. Don't miss this opportunity to support quality faith-based entertainment!
Rating: Summary: Jesus is the Reason for the Season Review: This book is very touching and demonstrates the true meaning of Christmas. It tells you the story of two different families and how they somewhat become connected in a very special way. It is brilliantly written and is a short and easy read. If you like the book you will also like Newsong's song called The Christmas Shoes. I would recomend this book for someone who would like a very good book that will leave you with a new feeling about the wonderful Christmas season.
Rating: Summary: The Cristmas Shoes Review: This book makes you think about what Christmas really means. Does it mean that you should ask for the most expensive things and only use them once or twice, things that really don't mean anything to you. Or is it about showing your family how much you love them, and that love is not bought its made. It shows two different point of views, one of an eight year old and one of a 36 year old lawyer. It allows you to see that the eight year old is actually richer than the laywer because of his family; loving, caring, and doing everything together. The laywer is only rich because he only cares about his work. Find out how these two people overcome the problems in their lives and help one another as well.
Rating: Summary: tear :'( Review: this book was absolutely amazing! i saw the movie last year on cbs and that had me crying the whole time...as did this book. the author did a wonderful job of portraying the characters, and their feelings. it almost felt as if u were goin through it yourself. and like u actually knew the people that it was happening to. i would DEFINITLY recommend this book to anyone and everyone.
Rating: Summary: A sweet, sappy tear-jerker Review: This quick read is touching, tear-jerking, and a little overly sweet. It stereotyped characters and preachy passages will keep it off the list of the all-time greats in literature, but chances are good that you won't regret reading it anyway.
The story line is fairly straightforward: the loving, but poor, family is having its life turned inside out as the mother dies; the boy makes brief, but life-changing, contact with a worldly-minded, money-driven attorney whose wealthy family is crumbling from neglect.
The story is told primarily from the point of view of Robert Layton, the lawyer.
This is a three-hanky book; don't read it in places where crying will be embarrassing.
It is particularly recommended for people who have lost loved ones, especially around significant holidays, and healthcare professionals who care more about people than about the (admittedly important) scientific details.
Rating: Summary: A Christmas Miracle To Touch Your Heart Review: What a wonderful, inspiring story to read for the holidays or any day. This story of two people whose lives intersect briefly one Christmas Eve shows how a small, insignificant event can alter your life forever. Robert Layton is a high-powered bankruptcy attorney whose hard work and long hours at the office have given his family all the material things of life but very little family unity. Nathan is an eight-year-old boy whose mother is dying of ovarian cancer. One Christmas Eve, after his father has told him that his mother will soon be going to heaven, Nathan frantically searches the stores for something to make his mother feel beautiful when she meets Jesus. He finds a pair of glittery silver shoes with red, blue, and green rhinestones and shimmering sequins. When he attempts to pay for them but doesn't have enough money he turns to the man behind him in line and asks for help. That man, Robert, has his life changed forever in this poignant moment. The book details the family life of these two characters that brings them to the pivotal moment in the store and takes the reader into the future when Nathan is a grown man who once again has a chance encounter with Robert. This is a story of how one man attempts to regain the family he has neglected while another family comes to terms with losing their wife and mother. It is a story to remind us all to be appreciative of the life we have, the small joys, and shared memories. It is a story of hope and faith and, most of all, the love that transcends the deepest heartaches.
Rating: Summary: Make this a must read this season! Review: What IS important in life? What IS the true meaning of Christmas? 80 hour work weeks? Money, fancy cars, expensive jewelry, STUFF? Or, is it the love of family? This book really hit home. By no means do I ever attempt to "keep up with the Jones'", but sometimes I find myself wishing for things - material items that aren't really NEEDED. This charming story reminds us of what really matters. It's not so much how the story was written, but the message in the story. A Christmas story every family needs to share. Merry Christmas.
