Summary: Never read the books but purchasing TODAY!
Review: Last night I had the opportunity to view a play entitled "The Boxcar Children" at the Seattle Children's Theatre. What a masterpiece--"flawless" expressed my husband who accompanied me along with our 4 year old daughter and 6 year old son. It captured the attention of old and young alike; not to mention, a tear jerker. I'm so anxious to purchase the books! I've read the reviews from others and can't wait to dive into them to read to my little ones! I have to say, the best part of the evening was actually meeting Gertrude Chandler Warner at the reception--what a wonderful treat!!!!! I placed 5 stars on the rating even though I have not read them yet...as they say, the book is always better!!!

Summary: This is the book that started my love of reading
Review: I can still remember the day in the 4th grade I checked out this book from the Crescent School library. Up until that time I had never read any book of substance, just those 5 minute "See Jane run" titles that are so forgettable. This book had me rivited. I was so proud that I had read such an "adult" book. There was such a sense of accomplishment, and the story was so interesting that I blew through it in just a few days. A year earlier I was held back in the 3rd grade and was not a very successful student. This book changed all of that for me. For the first time reading was something fun, and not just homework. After I read it I wanted to read more of these kinds of books but the school year was ending. That summer I enrolled in the Public Library Reading Club and read 75 more books. Today I look back on THE BOXCAR CHILDREN with fond memories. I went looking for it as a Christmas Present for my brother's son who is now in the 3rd grade. I was suprised to find that it was published during the heart of World War II in 1942. Great things endure and obviously I was not the only one to have discovered this book. I want to thank Mrs. Evelyn Wilkerson, that wonderful librarian who suggested the book for me. She gave me such a wonderful Christmas gift, the gift of reading for the enjoyment and pleasure of it. I totally recommend this title for any young person!!!! I always seem to be in need of Presents, I think I will go back and buy a few extra copies just in case :-) Ed Henderson Associate Editor of Scouter's Journal Magazine Past Chairman of the Spalding County Library Board

Summary: Fond memories of this postwar classic
Review: Warner's first book, in what was to become a series, was a standard in 1960's US elementary school reading. It combines the elements of adventure, a bit of fairy-tale, and children's budding self-reliance and resourcefulness to make an engaging story. Our 7-yo found it delightful, if a bit below her reading and vocabulary level.

The artwork inside the book is first-class; less so the stilted, "modernized" cover art of this and sundry other editions.

Summary: I LOVE this book!
Review: I am a 32 year old stay-at-home-mom and former teacher. I am so excited to find this hardcover with the ORIGINAL cover illustration. This is THE MOST memorable book from my childhood. I remember Mrs. Jordan reading it to us in 3rd grade I believe. It was SO suspenseful! I remember we would be disappointed when story time was over! I read it aloud to my first graders when I taught and they loved it too. (2nd grade may be the perfect read aloud age, but I think even young kids would enjoy it.) The word phrasing is very simple, which is nice. It's remniscent of the Dick and Jane books but much more realistic. I still remember as a child checking out this book from the library and running to the kitchen for milk and cheese so I could eat the same thing the children in the story were. I have bought the Boxcar Children Cookbook and plan on doing some of the "recipes" from the book with my preschool aged daughter and niece. BOY or GIRL, your kids will love this book, as a read aloud or read alone book, especially if you share your excitement of it first. Happy reading!

Summary: My son loves this series!
Review: This book was part of my five year olds reading curriculum this year, and he adored it. I think these stories should be a must-read for today's youth. The children are pleasant, helpful and kind to one another, which is so refreshing compared to some of the more modern stories written today.

Summary: Gertrude Warner Museum
Review: I also read this book as a child. I did not put it aside till I was finished. The copy I read was signed by Miss Warner as she had been my mother's teacher. I live in Putnam, CT where Miss Warner lived. The Gertrude Chandler Warner Museum has recently opened in an old boxcar. It has been renovated and sits very near the railroad station she lived near as a child. A google search will bring up some items on the museum. I never met Miss Warner but, by all accounts, she was a wonderful woman.

Summary: Fun to read for grown up kids!
Review: When I was nine years old and in fourth grade (never mind how long ago that was) I found THE BOXCAR CHILDREN when the Bookmobile came to our school. I checked it out and started reading it, and couldn't put it down.

About two weeks ago I decided to read it again. I was still taken in and charmed by its ease of reading and its very well-written plot.

It's about four orphaned children who have to fend for themselves and they find and old boxcar in the woods and they use it for shelter and manage to survive -- surprisingly well. The ending is happy, but for the young reader, the plot can keep them on edge until the story is over.

Some might criticize this book as being "dated," but I have found that a good story will come through in spite of the chronological time in which it happenned. For myself, I found it fun and refreshing to read. Things STILL can turn out well.

I'll make a guess that parents who read this story to their children will enjoy it as much as the kids do!

Summary: Second Best Book I've Ever Read
Review: Four young orphans run away from a grandfather they have never even met. They make their home in an abandoned boxcar and are able to rely on onky themselves. This is a wonderful series of books that is often overlooked these days with the onslaught of many new series. I recommend every child giving this series a try. I always read book one to my students early in the school year. I am glad to be able to introduce this series to about twenty children in one sitting. I have many of the books in the series on my classroom shelf; these are copies I brought in from home after my youngest son outgrew the series.

Summary: Perfect for The Young Readers
Review: I so much enjoyed this book because it brought back memories. This piece of history should be apart of any elementary school reading curriculum. Its basic wording makes it easier for the beginner reader.

I read it with my family, and we cheered for the kids when they got away from the baker's wife, when Henry found work with Dr. Moore, when Henry won the race, and most of all when the kids were united with their grandfather. Each night for the past week, it was a treat to sit and read about the adventures of The Boxcar Children. I send my many thanks to Gertrude Chandler Warner for creating such a wonderful story for my entire family to read.

Also, as an added plus, there is a photo album of Gertrude Chandler Warner near the end. It gives little bit of information about her family and other things. It also has a letter she wrote to her fans.

I highly recommend if you have young children. Enjoy.

Joy.
