Summary: A Pure Delight!
Review: The year was 1959 and I was a 4th grader at Buckeye Elememtary, in Buckeye Arizona. It had been my most difficult school year yet, as Mrs. Goodwin was a task master of the highest order and didn't seem to appreciate my wandering imagination, or lack of attention. In short...I was bored. I was sure nothing less than a miracle could make me like her, or my 4th grade class. Well, thankfully miracles do happen. Mrs. Goodwin decided that we were all going to get library cards and trotted us down to the school library. After getting over the initial shock of being around that many books, I got excited by the idea of being able to choose one to read. I don't remember what made me choose the Boxcar Children from all the other books, but it was my first independent reading experience...and it literally changed my life. The story of 3 young orphaned children who survive on their own in an abandoned boxcar was mesmerizing. I sat on the couch in our living room, unmoved by either hunger...or even the call of nature...because I was so involved in the lives and adventures of these children. It was the first time I found myself transported via the written word to a different time and place...and it was magic! I reread this book again just recently...and to my delight, I still find it wonderful. I defy any child not to find magic in these pages. And because the Boxcar Children is appropriate for either boys, or girls (a rarity these days) it's the perfect book for a parent to read to their children. This is truly a classic...right up there with "Doctor Dolittle", "The Wizard of OZ", or the "Enchanted Garden" and a "must have" for any family's book collection. Don't be surprised if your child can't put it down either and be prepared to read all the other books in the series. They are all wonderful as well. By the way, after reading this book back in 1959, I looked at 4th grade and Mrs. Goodwin in an altogether different light. Anyone, I thought, who appreciated great books like the Boxcar Children had to be okay...and she really was. This book was the key that opened a door to communication between us. Maybe it wasn't a miracle, but it came pretty darn close. Buy Boxcar Children...or, at the least...go to you local library and check it out. You won't regret it.

Summary: An Absolutely Enduring Treasure
Review: I remember picking this book from the shelf of my grade school library. I will never forget the reddish brown hard back, nor the number of times I wrote my name on the library card as I checked it out time and time again. Why? Well, my life paralleled that of The Boxcar Children. My parents died when I was little and my brothers and I became orphans, living in an orphanage, without a chance for adoption. I related wholeheartedly to this book and yearned for the children throughout, yet cried for the happy ending. This book is an enduring treasure to read and own. For those who did not experience being orphaned, it's a great testiment to making the best out of a sad and lonely situation. What a wonderful read that will always be near and dear to my heart.

Summary: Give your child a love for reading
Review: I read these books in 3rd grade. I'm 25 now. I still think fondly about the times when I read the Boxcar Children series. I still remember the vivid explaination by Gertrude Chandler Warner of the treasures the children find including a cup with a chip in it that they use to survive while living in the boxcar.

This is one of the many books that helped me develop a great love for reading. As an educator, I can now say that this is one of the literary gems out there that is timeless for students (and adults) of all ages to enjoy.

Summary: Excellent Chapter Book Series
Review: Four young orphans run away from a grandfather they have never even met. They make their home in an abandoned boxcar and are able to rely on onky themselves. This is a wonderful series of books that is often overlooked these days with the onslaught of many new series. I recommend every child giving this series a try. I always read book one to my students early in the school year. I am glad to be able to introduce this series to about twenty children in one sitting. I have many of the books in the series on my classroom shelf; these are copies I brought in from home after my youngest son outgrew the series.

Summary: Love the Series
Review: I loved them and my kids now love them. The only problem is that some of them are a bit dated in the storyline.

I recently found a new series that is a bit more up to date that my kids like even better. (...)

Summary: Perfect for The Young Readers
Review: I so much enjoyed this book because it brought back memories. This piece of history should be apart of any elementary school reading curriculum. Its basic wording makes it easier for the beginner reader.

I read it with my family, and we cheered for the kids when they got away from the baker's wife, when Henry found work with Dr. Moore, when Henry won the race, and most of all when the kids were united with their grandfather. Each night for the past week, it was a treat to sit and read about the adventures of The Boxcar Children. I send my many thanks to Gertrude Chandler Warner for creating such a wonderful story for my entire family to read.

Also, as an added plus, there is a photo album of Gertrude Chandler Warner near the end. It gives little bit of information about her family and other things. It also has a letter she wrote to her fans.

I highly recommend if you have young children. Enjoy.

Joy.
