Rating: Summary: I couldn't put it down, one of the best books I've ever read Review: I enjoyed the book because it grabed my attention fairly quickly. The characters are extremely well developed, especially villian John Hobart, and is an exciting thriller.
Rating: Summary: Hey this is a good book Review: Mills is a really good writer (unlike myself). He really makes you think about the drug problem and how, if properly equipped, a single lunitic could end it all so abruptly. All drug users, should read the book, it'd make think twice. But they'd probably just go on about their habbit.
Rating: Summary: An interesting concept, but plot is lost in the details..... Review: The very concept of destroying the drug trade by contaminating the drug supply with poisons is interesting, but the book is a bit confused on the details. One of the problems I had was that its hard to care about any of these characters; they're all jerks. Secondly, if you are going to sympathize with anyone in the story, it would be the "bad guy" who's actually trying to do something about the drug trade. Dialogue is quite stilted and action is somewhat slow, but, still, the author gets credit for a new idea. Also, a few depictions, such as a President who can't make a public statement on the crisis til he checks the polls, does seem very true to life.
Rating: Summary: Kyle Mills is a great author Review: I just loved reading Rising Phoenix. For his first novel, this is a great one. I found the story very interesting, with a lot of twists. Haven't read Storming Heaven yet, but I'm looking forward to it.
Rating: Summary: this is the best book ever Review: I've never touched a paperback book before I heard about this book. I was brought in to the book. the suspence made me keep on reading. I usually fall asleep reading fiction, but this book ranks as high as one of Richard Prestons. the plot is great. I highly recommend it.
Rating: Summary: A sophomoric writer comes up with a great plot idea. Review: Now I aint no pretentious book reviewer, but even an idiot like me can recognize poor character development and lazily researched settings. Take for example that scene where the characters go out in the "desert" around Houston, Tx. I used to live in Houston. Did that area turn into a desert since I left in 1990? I realize that when one is reading fiction, one does a certain amount of reality suspension, but when I came to that Houston desert scene, I was nearly disgusted enough to throw the book against the wall. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the plot. I know this may seem like a trivial complaint, especially to someone not familiar with the topography of Texas, but hey you Phoenicians, how would you like it if you were reading a novel and the author wrote: "Kirby climbed to the top of Camelback Mountain and squinted into the glint coming off the Pacific Ocean."
Rating: Summary: I could not put it down Review: this book really makes you sit up and face the dirty truths behind America's "war on drugs" We don't have the stomach for a war against our own citizens, and never have
Rating: Summary: Excellent - I highly recommend it. Review: An excellent first novel from Mr. Mills. If you like Grisham you'll love this book. It is thought provoking and well written. Being a republican I don't see how some conservatives see it as being "left-wing dribble". I look forward to reading Mr. Mills future works.
Rating: Summary: ONE OF THE WORST Review: I've never reviewed a book before however this one made me so upset I had to warn all fellow readers--If you are about to buy this book, STOP! First, Rising Phoenix is an oxymoron, isn't it? Kyle Mills is possibly one of the worst storytellers that I've ever read and Rising Phoenix possibly one of the worst stories. This book is so bad that it's difficult to even know where to begin. The plot is non-existent, there is no tension in the book, no sense of an emerging evil and absolutely nothing to keep the readers attention. The characters. Not only are they not two dimensional, they're not even one dimensional. Beamon (who I guess is supposed to be the main character) is an idiot. He's tries to be funny, he's not, he tries to be smart, he stupid and you get the sense that Kyle Mills and Mark Beamon may have been switched at birth. Like I said, I've never reviewed a book before but this one got me so upset. I thought The Winner by David Baldacci was bad! but this one takes the cake. Mills daddy was the director for the FBI and that's the ONLY reason this trash got published. Kyle Mills, please don't kill anymore trees and spare us all! PS--if you're questioning how bad this book is, read the back cover beneath Mr. Mills picture. Even THAT is screwed up! Maybe the editor did it as a joke.
Rating: Summary: Consuming Review: Fun book to read...a great warm-up as I await the arrival of Clancy's new book. A fascinating moral dilemma, despite some sloppiness in realistic representation. The most glaring factual error was a reference to some thugs enthralled in a football game--in mid-February??? (as the chapter headline denoted). Gimme a break! The bowls are finished the first week in January. And the Superbowl is played the end of January. You'll NEVER convince me a bunch of bodyguards would be interested in the PRO BOWL??? Nobody's THAT stupid!!! Even so, I found myself spending every spare moment turning pages of this book--a sure-fire way of indicating how much I enjoyed the story. Now, what can I find on my bookshelves to read the next few days before Clancy arrives??? If you like Clancy, you'll love this one!
