Rating: Summary: The Honk and Holler Review: In the tradition of Where the Heart is, Billie Letts does it again. A wonderful read. I bought this book before making the trip from North Carolina to Oklahoma. I finished it half way here. Can't wait for her next one.
Rating: Summary: Honk and Holler Review: Great Story. Makes you want to make a new connection and be kind to others.
Rating: Summary: It's A Keeper! Review: If you liked "Where the Heart Is", you will love Billie Letts' second novel "The Honk and Holler". Billie Letts writes with such a warmth about the characters she creates and that makes it very easy to get into the story. This book is a book that will be enjoyable more than once!
Rating: Summary: Wonderful Review: I wont get into the story line because that has been covered so much already. I will say that I just loved this book. It was interesting, funny, heartbreaking, and fun. I did not want it to end, and liked it more than Where the Heart Is.If you are looking for a pick me up with believable, interesting characters, this is a wonderful choice.
Rating: Summary: Heartwarming Novel Review: "The Honk and Holler Opening Soon" is Billie Letts second book. For all of you who read and loved "Where the Heart Is" (or even if you did not read it)----this book is even better. And it was even better the second time around......I loved it!!! The characters are memorable, and what a cast: Caney Paxton, the cafe owner and a Vietnam vet who is wheelchair-bound because he fell out of a helicopter in Vietnam; MollyO, a waitress and Caney's surrogate mother; Bui, a Vietnamese refugee who sneaks into the local AME church to sleep and finds employment at the Honk and Holler; and Vena Takes Horses, a wanderer who just sort of lands at the cafe. Letts brings all of these characters, and others, to life and makes the reader care about them. Set in a cafe in a small Oklahoma town, we are introduced to small-town life with all its foibles, its peculiar characters, and its conflicts. I did not want this book to end. It made me laugh and it made me cry. It is a book about family and its importance, even though the family at the Honk and Holler was not related by blood but connected by a different bond. By the way, "Honk and Holler" was published in August of 1999, long BEFORE Letts was anointed by Oprah in December of 1999. In fact, I remember being disappointed that this book was not the one Oprah chose. I would heartily recommend this book and look forward to Letts' next one.
Rating: Summary: Fabulous storytelling! Review: In my opinion, Billie Letts is an extremely gifted story teller. She has a knack for making even the simplist person seem like the most complex character ever known. Unfortunately, if you do not have an open mind to "storytelling" possibilities, this gem of a book may go right over your head. If you allow yourself to just be taken in with the story, the characters, etc., I guarantee you will not be able to put this book down, and it will then lead you to other books written by Billie Letts. It's fun, enjoyable reading with an element of truth behind it. Happy reading!
Rating: Summary: Amazing Story Review: I am a 16 yrs old, and i am not much of a reader. I read the bare minimum of what is assigned in school, and sometimes not even that. I enjoyed reading this book so much though. I honestly couldn't put it down. I felt like i knew ever character and loved hearing all about them. It is an amazing story about normal people that aren'e perfect, but have created amazing lives for themselves. After reading this book i had all my friends read it, and i didn't have one that didn't like it. I reccomend it to everyone. Especially all you teenagers who need to find a book to read for school. This is it!!!
Rating: Summary: One of my favorites Review: This book is so very good, it has a cast of "real" characters that you emotionally get close to. The hitch hiker that comes to town and starts working at the local hang out diner, Honk and Holler, brings new ideas and waitressing know-how to the establishment as well as a lot of business. Such a diversity of characters....town bullies, older men that don't miss their morning coffee in their favorite stools at the counter, vietnamese immigrant who feels the brunt of predjudice, some low income mobile home owners struggling to make it, and many more just plain real-to-life people. This book is excellent and is a pleasure to read. Do yourself a favor and pick this book up and read it, you'll discover a group of new friends that you'll truely enjoy "being with". Highly reccommend this book :-}
Rating: Summary: Easy entertaining read Review: This was such an enjoyable book to read, it just draws you right in and keeps you there till the end. The characters are so interesting and diverse; I would love to read a sequel with the same characters, since I really got to know them!
