Rating: Summary: Stone Fox shows a great friendship between a boy and his dog Review: I've recently had the chance to pick up and read a great book called Stone Fox. Although it's really small, the book is written extremely well. HARPER TROPHY® published Stone Fox in 1980. What a wonderful book this is, the book was written by John Reynolds Gardiner and illustrated by (not cover) Marcia Sewall. The story in Stone Fox begins with a huge problem, what made me interested in reading it. Little Willy's grandpa is sick. What will Willy do? The old man won't get out of bed. After trying and trying, the boy,Willy, finds out why. The tax collector told Willy grandpa hasn't been paying the taxes for approximately 10 years. Grandpa is giving up on life. Little Willy asks all the people he knew what to do. Some of those people are Doc smith, Hank, Lester, and Mess Williams. They all decided it was best to sell the farm, but Little Willy and his dog Searchlight wouldn't give up. There has to be another way! A little later, miraculously, they found 'The Way'. He happened to be at Lester's General store and saw a poster. The poster said that there was to be a dogsled race at Jackson, Wyoming. Any number of dogs were allowed to enter the race. What a miraculous happening! The prize just happened to be $500! Little Willy and Searchlight took the chance. The two had been through a lot together. They would win even if they had to defeat their adversary, Stone Fox. Stone Fox was a tribe member of the Shoshone Indians. He wanted to win the money so he could buy back land for his tribe. It was said that he never lost a single race. When the day of the race came, Willy was in the lead. Stone Fox was dead last. Who would win? The tragic ending at the end of the race stunned everybody. Searchlight was dead. To everyone's amazement, Stone Fox let Willy carry Searchlight across the finish line. Although this book has many superior parts in this book, my favorite part is in Chapter 10. It was a thrilling part where Searchlight's heart burst. The part where Searchlight died was a miserable section of the book. What I liked about it was that the part was so shocking and unexpected. This section made me think, why did Stone Fox let victory slip away from him and let Willy win. It was out of the ordinary.
Though there were countless fine, and excellent parts, there was a really boring part. Chapter 8 so boring that you would fall asleep reading the chapter. It was monotonous. Basically nothing happened in it. It was all showing and telling as if everything was still, unmoving. The chapter told how many people, how toll they were, who was watching, and how the race started. It described very well, but as I mentioned before absolutely nothing happens. Anyone who likes amazingly interesting dog stories, would like this book. I would recommend it to them. Stone Fox would amuse them because It's a book always with something happening, except in Ch.8, and never-ending excitement. The dog is amazing and so is the boy, Willy. What will probably catch your attention are the character descriptions, for example the white star on Searchlight's forehead. Since I say it's so interesting, why don't you find out yourself!
Rating: Summary: STONE FOX Review: I thought the book was the best book I read but It had a sad ending thats the part I didnt like.
Rating: Summary: You Must Read Stone Fox Review: This book was called Stone Fox and it was by John Reynolds Gardiner. My favorite character was the dog named Searchlight. She was an old dog from Indiana. I also liked the character named Willy. Willy was a boy who was ten years old. He wanted to try to help his grandpa because he was sick. Willy's grandpa also had to pay lots of taxes. So Willy and his dog Searchlight were going to try to go in a dog sledding contest and win $500 dollars. Willy entered by using all his college money. Will Willy and Searchlight win? Will they get $500 dollars to pay off the taxes and not lose there home? I recommend this book to everyone. It is a great book and is a nice thing to read. So go to your local library and check it out!!

Rating: Summary: Outstanding Review: Stone Fox by John Gardener is an outstanding book. This is the story of a young boy who lives with his grandfather. Willy decides to enter a dog sled race in order to win a money prize. Grandpa is in jeopardy of losing his potato farm. Read to find out how Willy does. This book is a must read . It kept me on the edge of my seat. Willy must race againt the champion, stone fox who is legenday. The entire town backs Willy in his quest to win. John Reynolds Gardiner was not destined to be a writer. He had a difficult time in school and was told that his grammar and spelling were so poor that he would never do good in college English. His brother convinced him to write because of his great imagination. Many students like me can relate to John Reynolds Gardiner. Read his book!
Rating: Summary: Special Education Students Review: My 5th grade learning support class just finished reading Stone Fox. From start to finish, they were involved in this story. What was interesting to me was the reaction of my "tough guy" to Chapter 10. My students were able to understand the problem, empathize with little Willy, and discuss the actions of Stone Fox. My hesitant readers looked forward to class, and many took the book home to read ahead!
Rating: Summary: Stone fox, short but great Review: I read this for a school assignment. Stone Fox is a book about a 10 year old named little Willy. He lives with his grandfather on a farm. Then, one day, his grandfather became ill. Little Willy joins a race in hopes to make his grandfather better. He is racing against an Indian named Stone Fox. The ending of the book is very sad. It is a very good book and is great for small children because it is short and easy to read. This book has taught me many things. Four stars is about how good this book is.
