Summary: It's Not all Tea and Crumpets!!!
Review: Life for the slightly neurotic, modern thirty something single girl in London is not easy. This novel, recommended by my son, is funny, and had me in tears (laughter and some kind of common female bonding thing). Bridget worries about her weight, her health and her love life. Her mother (who is going through a mid-life crisis, leaving her husband for a man named Julio) tries to fix her up with a man who wears a patterned sweater, but Bridget and her boss are in the midst of a torrid e-mail flirtation. Hope they make a movie of it! Good for fun reading. I bought this book while on a holiday in London, stayed up all night when I should have been sleeping my way through jet lag! I also bought the sequel, in case we didn't have it over here - imagine my surprise to find out this is a top seller in the US!

Summary: hysterically funny
Review: there's not much else to say. i was un-attracted by the cover of this book and its title, which led me to expect something cloyingly romantic or otherwise girl-seeks-boy. within one page i was completely captivated. i laughed so hard my husband was annoyed, wanting to know what was so funny. i had to tell him he wouldn't understand. i have not laughed so hard in years.

Summary: Modern woman, not all briefcases and power suits
Review: Bridget Jones is a real woman, thank God! She is not the perfect woman, and she is not struggling with her perfect life, she is struggling in the real world, just like everbody else. Bridget Jones is a character to identify with and love for all her faults. Helen Fielding has created a book, that does not worry about: 'the message it sends out', but understands a book of fiction is about entertainment, and with Fieldings pithy, witty way of writing it is guaranteed to entertain. A book for all interested in real life, and real women.

Summary: Shallow quick read
Review: Bridget Jones's Diary fluxuates between being a critique of the superficiality of women's obsessions and a clever depiction of the growing pains of our late-twenties/early-thirties. Funny discussions with her flighty mother, overbearing friends, horrid boss, and stereotypical lovers do not make up for the disturbing simplification of intelligent women who seem introspective until they think about food, fat, self image, or clothing. Disappointing as clever read, disappointing as expose of late-twentieth century women. Not worth buying, but worth reading a couple of chapters if you find it abandoned by someone tired with the repetition.

Summary: How could I not love it?
Review: This story of a neurotic 20-something is based on my favorite story, Jane Austen's Pride & Prejudice, so I was an immediate fan. If you're not familiar with the original, this one stands firmly on its own with great humor and an honest depiction of a woman struggling with her insecurities and dysfunctional family. I loved every page and couldn't wait to read the sequel as soon as I set this one down.

Summary: Bridget Jones's Diary
Review: This has to be one of the most entertaining books on the market today! The diary format could have been difficult to carry off, but the author uses it to excellent advantage. Bridget Jones takes the reader where so many 30-something females have gone before, to the insecurities and anxieties of the single friend/daughter/lover. She fights the battles of weight gain, smoking, and a penchant for lottery tickets, along with well-meaning friends and relatives who just cannot accept her single status. Readers from all age groups will find this one of the most hysterically funny reads of the year.

Summary: Literary value = nil - Window to women's anxieties = five
Review: Thre are two ways in which an eventual reader could enjoy this book: either if s/he wants to spend time with an easy-read piece of trash or if s/he (especially a "he") wants to understand what the typical anxieties of today's woman are. Undoubtly, these anxieties are exaggerated in Bridget, but by and large, the stress of social interaction, the pressures of family and friends to have a partner with whom to form a committed relationship, and above all, the anxiety of the clock ticking and Bridget losing her fertile years are a reflection of what females experience. Obsession with self-help, yet a life with constant self-deception and self-justification (e.g., "it doesn't matter if I break a New Year's resolution on 1st January because everyone knows that the new year starts on 2nd January" is a classic) and the focus on weight loss are further examples of today's women. Also, the mirror into the way women relate to each other is fascinating. A girls' night out is the framework and excuse to indulge themselves into endless glutony and booze. In my opinion, this trashy book has incredibly been a real success with women because, as soap operas, female readers relate to it. As a man, this makes me quite disappointed.

Review: What? Huh? Tell me this doesn't speak of how women are today? If so, I'm in a sad state. If not, yippee. The book wasn't incredibly horrible, just not incredibly great like I was lead to believe through editorial and personal reviews . It was a quick read, although not earth-shattering in content and rather just blah. Also, it could be viewed as a little demeaning....

Summary: V. Hilarious.
Review: Ms. Fielding has created a wonderful world in this funny book; Bridget's dilemmas are every girls' dilemmas, and I loved Bridget Jones and her crazy singleton friends. What a fun, silly, great, entertaining read. If you are looking for a deep, life changing book with a depressing theme, don't read Bridget Jones's Diary, because it will make you laugh too hard.
