Rating: Summary: Memoirs of a Goodfella Review: I am ashamed to admit I actually found myself sorry for Sammy when he's arrested! I read this book in one evening as I couldn't put it down.Fagaddaboutit, there's no better non-fiction mafia story out there.
Rating: Summary: The Underboss Review: I have not been able to put this book down since I bought it! Sammy the Bull has been pretty popular these days with his recent drug arrest, which is what prompted me to purchase the book. He is definitely an interesting character! It is sad that in exchange for his testimony the murders he committed were swept under the carpet. It is even sadder that the tragic course of his life continued even after he came out of prison. Apparently, he still feels like he is above the law. I really enjoyed this book and the insight it furnished into the crime families.
Rating: Summary: The underboss Review: This book gives plenty of real good detail on the life and times of being in the streets. Reading this book gives you an interesting understanding of the day to day lives of gangsters. Its very intriguing and you can't wait to get to the next page. I strongly recommend this book even though it is just one persons side of the story.
Rating: Summary: Fantastic biography....a must-read. Review: Maas did an exquisite job of presenting Gravano's story without all the hokey, Hollywoody glamour that is often given to mob stories. It is laid out on the table, as was....no fluff, just the facts. While the book was long, it was far easier to understand the information than it was to read it in the papers and hear it on television during Gotti's trial. The book exudes Gravano's bravery in stepping forward to finally do what is right.
Rating: Summary: The same old story Review: I felt this book offered nothing new to the Mafia story that hasn't been published in better books like "Wiseguy" by Pilleggi. Maas strains to make Gravano "sympathetic," but really he's just pathetic, as are Gotti and, for that matter, Peter Mass, for pedaling the same old song thirty years after he first published "Valachi Papers."
Rating: Summary: I could not put it down! Review: I thouroughly enjoyed reading this book. I have never really been interested in mob books, but this book made me feel like I was right there experiencing these things right along with Sammy Gravano. The book was very well written, and the pictures were chilling. I had difficulty putting the book away until I was finished with it.
Rating: Summary: THE TRUTH Review: Coming from an insiders point of view I beleive this may be one of the best books ever written. I'm a close relative of this man and admire him, don't get me wrong I'm not glorifing him or anything but he is a great man in my eyes. Yes alot of the things he did were horrible and most of the things he did were against the law but to know him,is wonderful. In the book it tells how he struggled in school and didn't get past the eighth grade and yet he is the smartest man I know. If you know anything about the mob and what it did I'd think you'd say he's a very smart man as well, and not only him. The mob as a whole ran for some time one of the biggest cities in the world they ran everything from crap games to multi-million dollar construction jods they had there noses in everything, except drugs. This all changed with John his partner Angelo was heavy into to drugs which was not supposed to be in aloud in the Cosa Nostra, that,John's obsession with glamour, and the FBI being as smart as they are I think brought down the mob,Sammy was only the icing on the cake. Either he told me once or it's in the book or in an interview somewhere which I don't recall, but I'm remeber it clearly he said "This life is full of double-cross moves,John double-crossed me and I Tripled-crossed him." To know this man is to love him,he is always joking around being a cool person, always straight up about things. I don't know him as the gangster tough guy type but the family man, hanging out at BBQ's throwing people in the pool. Alot of people who read this book or other write ups about him think he's this cold blooded killer which he is but he is a real down to earth normal NEW YORKER!!!! I deffinately recomend this book it should be in every household in the U.S. and the world..
Rating: Summary: a great true story. Review: Plausable reading it its best
Rating: Summary: A real eye-opener into Cosa Nostra! Review: Even though Sammy "the Bull" Gravano is the ultimate "rat" of them all by giving up John Gotti, his biography is a stunning eye-opener into the everyday life of being a gangster in Cosa Nostra and the Gambino family. When you read the book, it makes you feel like you're right there in the middle of the action with all the killings, betrayal, "omerta", etc. that's associated with the Mafia. Regardless of whether you think Gravano was a snitch or hero, this IS the book to read!
Rating: Summary: Ay, fuggedaboudit! Review: Cool book, but the guy's obviously lying through his teeth. Every mobster, once they feel free to tell their story, tries to make themselves look like friggin' Robin Hood. In the HBO movie "Gotti," they make Sammy the Bull look like a greedy oppotunistic backstabber, and in "Underboss," Sammy makes John Gotti out like a degenerate gambler megalomaniac glory hound paranoid. I bet both of those are true of them, despite the fact that they both left the bad parts about themselves out of their accounts. Truth is, I wonder whether or not Sammy the Bull didn't try to help Chin Gigante whack Gotti, maybe under promises that he would be made boss.
