Rating: Summary: A fast, exciting read. Review: Wedge's Gamble is the second installment of the X-Wing Series. In this adventure, the Rebel Alliance has decided to capture the jewel of the galaxy: Coruscant. Heading up the mission is Rogue Squadron, who is infiltrated into the planet to take down the planetary shields. But while on Coruscant, things begin to unravel and the Rogues must take down the shields or risk capture or execution. While the Rogues go about their agenda, the Imperial High Command begins their deadly work... I think that this is one of the best SW books out. It has everything that one could ask for. Michael Stackpole filled it up with many things, ranging from romance to technical. I like Stackpole's method of Military writing, for it gives a nice feel to the book. Things don't always go well, and are sometimes harder for the characters than meets the eye. Stackpole also details the Imperial Coruscant well, and it fits nicly in George Lucas's Coruscant from the Phantom Menace. As always, the action is superb, although much of it is on the ground, for the Rogues are planet based, but there are the classic space dogfights in the beginning and in the end. The only thing that I found wrong is that there is a little too much in the book, and it might have worked well if the taking of Coruscant took place over two books, and that would allow for more detail and actions. A very good read indeed!
Rating: Summary: X-wing is a great series Review: i have read all but perhaps 2-4 of the star wars novel and x-wing is a solid series which is definitely worth reading
Rating: Summary: Better than the first Review: This book really expands and goes deeper in plot than the first did. While Corran is still the main focus, more of the Squad is explored, especially Gavin Darklighter. Since the Squad is sent to Coruscant undercover to help win it from the Empire, there's a lot of cloak and dagger action along with the flying. There's a few chases present, and more than once I was holding my breath in anticipation. With the involvement of a spy in Rogue Squadron I found myself just dying to know who it was, and Iceheart has a few surprises in store for the members of Rogue Squadron and the Rebellion. There's a cliff-hanger ending and I had to start on the next book right away. Stackpole does a great job, but like the first, I found some of the battle scenes a little hard to follow. Other than that there was no problems with the book. If you liked the first X-Wing book, you'll love this one even more! A much deeper plot, and it leaves you just begging for more. A defintate read for any Star Wars fan or of a great action book. Highly reccommended.
Rating: Summary: One of the Best Star Wars Books Around! Review: I really enjoyed this book. I have read other books in the series, and when you start one book, you can't put it down and you have to read the other books. This book keeps with the Star Wars tradition of fighting, but also adds suspicion, hanging you on the edge of wanting to just jump into the book and fix the problems you know the answer to. There is a slight touch of mystery that engulfs you in the book. I can't wait to read more books in the series!
Rating: Summary: neat Review: This book builds on the events of Rogue Squadron. All the great characters are back except for one who died between the two books. Wedge is as always calm, upright, noble and loyal. Corran is learning. More is done with Gavin in this book which is nice. Not many space battles. Most of the fighting takes place on the ground. This makes for a nice change of pace from the first book. The plot to free the criminals from Kessel sounded rather forced but then I guess it was intended that way. WEdge didn't like it either. Iella is introduced. I somehow knew whenI first read this book that she and Wedge were made for eachother. The ending is a shock and leads into the third book. So until Wedge breaks down and does something unethical, make mine Stackpole.
Rating: Summary: This book has problems. Review: Wedge's Gamble is quite possibly the worst in the series. It combines all of the failings of the other books with a boring and unbelievable story. I didn't enjoy Tycho Celchu's problems dealing with the squadron's newest droid (who in many ways is a clone of C-3P0). I also felt that the lack of realism was mostly due to the complete stupidity of the Imperials and the grossly imbalanced casualties that are handed out during battle. Has anyone else played TIE Fighter, or X-Wing Alliance? There is more to blowing up capital ships than flying in and lobbing proton torpedoes at maximum range. The dogfights seemed slow and detracted from the very real threats to the Republic by becoming so character driven. Corran (as usual) was rather annoying, particularly when he drew attention away from the main characters, and the major plot. This is one of the weaker ones of the series, buy The Courtship of Princess Leia, or The Bacta War instead.
Rating: Summary: A great book in a great series Review: X-Wings, tie fighters, evil Imperial plots, a traitor, and some really great characters(good and evil) all add up to another star wars thrillfest in this highly praised X Wing series. I have heard a lot of hype about this series and only recently started reading it. The first book was really good and this book is even better. The great Star Wars trademark action is here and the plot is very well thought out. The action is relentless but never gets on your nerves becasue it isn't just filler. Like I said, a very satisfying plot with action, mystery, solid dialogue, and even a little romance thrown in there. A great read that will leave you wanting more and there are no disappointments there because the series runs to 8 or 9 books so far.
Rating: Summary: WAHOO!YIPEE! YAHOO! Review: That was a well kinda TERRIFIC BOOK! They introuduce the much heard of Iella.(Why neither one ran into each other's name on the rosters is beyond me)That was a good thing to do. The depth and truth to Kirtan Loor comes out. He is a good character that was done quite well. I wonder if Stackpole planned the crazy connections between Loor, Isard, Wessari, and Horn. Probobly. The whole issue of the mysterious spy within the squad and Horn's reaction to it is so Star Wars. The characters keep within what we know about them. Somone who is afraid of snakes isn't a snake charmer in the next book if you know what I mean.I know that this is somthing that is one of Stackpole's strengths. I know that Iella wasn't an idiot from what Corran says but I didn't know she was a genius and a tough cookie as well. A welcome change from your typical damsel in distress. Even in Star Wars, I look for books that aren't filled with pitiful feminine wimps. How about a guy wimp? Seen one of those recently? I doubted it. Then how about all he undercover stuff. Think about it. Nobody dies every couple scentences. You always get a couple close misses , but death is no funny thing. You know it and I know it. Most importantly. You see that the "Bad Guys" are out to kill people and make trouble, but the "Good Guys" are trying to save lives and protect the galaxy from slime, you know the usual. Thing is, that is what seperates the Alliance and the Empire anyway. GO REBEL ALLIANCE. Or should I say GO NEW REPUBLIC! Amazing how republics build over night.
Rating: Summary: Not as good as the first book, but still a good read Review: This book wasn't as good as the first one, but is still worth a read. Michael A. Stackpole is a great writer, and this book is no exception - the writing is great. It's the story line that isn't so great. First off, a squadron of fighter pilots would never be given the mission that Rogue Squadron gets. These guys are pilots, yet for some reaon they are sent undercover on a reconnaissance mission to infiltrate the very heart of the empire - Imperial Center on Coruscant. This makes the entire story a little tough to swallow. Second problem is the way the Rogues keep bumping into one another. It would never happen on a world as huge as Coruscant. Third issue is the way Wedge reacts when Corran reports seeing one of the Rogues meeting with Imps. Corran is a realiable source, and he saw it with his own eyes. Yet Wedge totally blows it off, even though they're in the midst of such a sensitive mission. Totally unrealistic. Anway, it's still worth the read, and has a good ending. I hope book three is better.
Rating: Summary: Long live Wedge! Review: Oh, this rules! I haven't yet read the first one, so this one was a little confusing, but it rules! I was very pleased do find a book that didn't have Luke or Han in it, with minimal appearances of Leia. I love the original characters, but new ones are even better! My favourite pilot of the Rogues, besides Wedge, would definitely be Gavin. He's so awesome! I have this thing for insignificant characters, so I love Gavin! Please include more about him in the next book! This one gets six stars!
