Review: Saul's latest creation is one more strand in the web of his talent that always leaves his readers begging for more. THE RIGHT HAND OF EVIL is perhaps his best yet. His characters and environments are so real you feel as if you are a fly on the wall. The atmosphere he can create can send a chiver down your spine that lasts for days. THE RIGHT HAND OF EVIL is a sure-fire hit that I would recommend to anyone who is not having trouble sleeping.

Review: It's like the Omen, Rosemary's Baby and Amityville Horror all in one book. This book should be made into a movie! It sent shivers up my spine and kept me turning the pages way, way into the night. John Saul's best book so far!

Review: I thoroughly enjoyed this tale. It kept me on the edge of my seat as I tried to determine what twists the plot would take. Who is crazy? Who's possessed? What happened and why now? The atmosphere of this book was delicious. Curl up with it on a dark and stormy night!

Summary: A fun haunted house story
Review: This is the first John Saul novel I have read and I am certainly curious to read more. While the plot is certainly cliche, John Saul brought lots of unique elements to the story. I really enjoyed the characters and John did a fantastic job sucking me into their world. Plenty of elements about the book surprised me, including the graphic violent images, and I was certainly engrossed, dying to find out how it all ends. That said, I was slightly disappointed with the ending, but overall, the book is a quick, fun read, but definitely forgotten the next day. I'm not sure how well other John Saul books fare, but I am very curious to find out.

Summary: A Quick and Dirty Thrill
Review: For me, horror novels fall into three categories: the ones whose authors are able to broaden their appeal outside of the genre, those that have more limited appeal, but are fun reads anyhow, and those that are pure schlock. The Right Hand of Evil, like most books by John Saul, fits into the second category. It's not all that memorable, but it's not trash, either. The author sticks with what works for him, the theme of a family of outcasts in a weird small town, but this family, struggling to hold it together with the "evil" of alcoholism hanging over their heads, made a stronger impression on me than those in any of his other novels. The fear Ted Conway's wife and children have of him is very true to life, unlike the fear of the townspeople, who are little more than cariacatures. I didn't care for for the priests, for Jake, the trapper who has a long-standing grudge against the Conways, or the teenage twins' friends. They exist in the story more as plot devices than as real people. But I did like the dynamic between the twins. And in terms of gross-out thrills, Saul delivers, at least up until the final chapters, where too many loose ends are left to dangle. I just wish he didn't have to torture the pets so much.

Summary: Exciting and Suspenseful
Review: Ted Conaway's aunt dies leaving him a mansion in St. Albans and a trust fund with some rather strange provisions. A financially strapped alcoholic, he and his wife Janet and three children Jared, Kim and Molly have no choice but to move in. Ted plans to turn it into an inn; but the town's people try to block his plans. The house and the Conway family ancestors are shrouded by mysterious occult events disappearances, sacrifices, rituals etc. stemming from a failed exorcism that seduced a priest away from the Catholic Church. The townspeople fear a resurgence of the evildoings with Conways once again occupying the old homestead. The story pacing is exciting and pulls the reader right along with it. The suspense kept me reading until I'd finished the book in one sitting. This is an excellent read!

Summary: Quick ending...
Review: I enjoyed this book for the most part. I could not put it down, and read the last half of the book in one sitting. I felt the end came abruptly, but I find that a lot in the horror genre. I thought there was good character development, and Mr. Saul had me liking and hating characters at his whim. Not much for thrills, but rarely do I find them in books as much as I do movies, others may disagree. Overall, I enjoyed it, and would definitely recommend Creature and the Blackstone Chronicles as well.
