Rating: Summary: Sounder: a great book for teaching about metaphor Review: As a fourth grade teacher who's used Sounder in my reading class for the past four years, I can attest to the astonishing beauty of the writing in this book. It is full of the most carefully crafted metaphors, which are fairly easily understood by children in the 9 - 10 year old range. It is a perfect choice for Black History Month, or for integration with Language Arts. I have read the book many, many times; yet the last page always makes me cry. That is among the most brutally beautiful endings I've ever encountered
Rating: Summary: Sounder Review: I think Sounder is a fairly boring book, and i should know i'm a book worm. i read about half the book then i started skimming, becaus it was so boring. i mean almost no one but the dog had a name. i believe you have to have a name not just a description to make an interesting person. also i belive that it is based on a true story, and i find most of those to be boring. i recommend this for adults, but not for kids. they'd probally get tired of it in the first two chapters.
Rating: Summary: Sounder Review: In my opinion, "Sounder" is an excellent book. It's a book about a black boy growing up with no father and an injured dog in a time of segregation. I liked this book because it is a very emotional book. To me, I felt like I was there with the boy and I could feel his pain. Every move he made, I made with him. If he cried, I cried, if he laughed, I laughed. And though it was a sad book, I enjoy reading about people's lives, whether the book is fiction or non fiction. Therefore, I recommend this book to people who enjoy fiction or non ficton books about people's lives. I also recommend this book to people who like reading about black people and white people who were prejudice. And for me, a person who doesn't like to read, a book has to be pretty good if I like it. And this book I like.
Rating: Summary: Ruff,Ruff Review: In the book Sounder from William H. Armstrong there is a boy who has a loving family it doesn't say there names in the book so i can't tell you that. Well his dad and him always goes hunting so they can eat. So one day they found a dog they named Sounder because it is always howling. It was a black and white dog it was a great dig ut always loved to play so one day the dog's master taught the dog named Sounder how to hunt. After that the dog named Sounder was great at hunting it seemed it already knew how to hunt for squirls and other creatures.
In the middle of the book their was some cops who came by the house and said that the father of the house stole some food because they had so much food and they couln't believe that black people would have so much food. So they took him to jail for no reason at all just because they think he stole something so then the mother and son didn't know how they were going to make it with out the man of the house being there. S while the cops had the father in the back of the truck Sounder ran after it and the cop shot the dog, and the boy thought that his dog was dead. So about a month later in the book the boy found his dog and it had healed itself.
Later in the book the boy went to go visit his father at the jail cell. When he got their he seen the man who put his father in jail he hated his guts. When he seen his dad his dad looked so beat up because the cops always beat him. Later in the book the boy had to get a job because if he didn't they wouldn't have nothing to eat. The boy did pretty good at that job, a made a good amount of money. So at the end of the book the father came back home and they lived a great life.
Rating: Summary: My Review of Sounder Review: My book is called Sounder the author for the book is William Armstrong. It's a Newberry awards book, and its genre is Historical Fiction meaning that the story took place in the past. It was explained very well, it is great, and was done beautifully.
In the story Sounder a young boy loved his dog Sounder for a very long time. He lived with his family in a cabin, and was very happy. One day while the boy, and his family was enjoying a delicious feast something terrible happened. The sheriff of the town came, and arrested the boy's father for an unknown reason. Things then start to go difficult and bad for him.
My opinion of one of the story elements is I didn't like it when the author didn't used the character's real names. Instead he used words like "the boy", or "the boy's father". It makes guessing the characters real names very hard. For example one piece of dialogue in the book is "With the flavor of ham, and biscuits still in his mouth the boy felt good."
I liked the way the author described things that make it look like you were there by using taste, smelling, touch, hearing, and sight. A piece of dialogue in the book said "He pulled in deep breaths from above the stove to catch the steam escaping from under the kettle's lid as it bounced up, and down, breaking the rhythm of the bubbles that went lob, lob, lob on the surface of the pot."
The thing I would say about the book Sounder is it is really great, and it teaches kids about life, and its hardships. I recommend it for those who are new in sixth grade.
Rating: Summary: Very Boring and Dumb! Review: I read this book and saw the film version of it in school, but I have never forgotten the emotion with which it was written. It shows the true capacity for human strength and determination in the face of injustice.
