Summary: Sounder
Review: This childrens book by William Howard Armstrong digs into the life of a young black boy, his father and their dog, Sounder. It is set in the old south and details the struggles of an African American family of this time. The usual struggles for this family are getting food and staying warm until one terriable night that changes the family forever. The father is taken to jail and Sounder is wounded in the struggle. From that night on the boys life is faced with even more struggles to survive, as he is hoisted to the head of the house. He worries about his fathers well being, which sends him onn many adventures looking for him. Through all of the bad the boy does manage to find the good in all occasions.
This would be a great read for fourth to eighth grade students. It is a truthful and detailed insight into the history of the African-American race.

Summary: The wonderful dog
Review: I like the book becasue the dog gets shot; the boy thinks he is dead because of what his mom told him. The boys father comes home and sounder comes out from under the house and he is alive, but then the boys father dies and sounder dies a while afer his master dies. The boy learned how to read at the end of the book. He tells his brother and sisters the stories that his mother used to tell him over and over again. When the boy started to read the book that he got from the trash he might teach his brother and sisters and the boy was the first one to read a book in his family.

Summary: A Must Read
Review: This moving coming of age story will make you laugh and will make you cry. My 11 year old daughter loved it & still talks about it. My daughter said it ranked up there w/ her all time favorite dog story "The Wreck of the Ethie". Terrific book for the entire family to share.

Summary: A Powerful Novel for All Ages
Review: In the nearly 35 years since it was published, SOUNDER has lost none of its original power or impact. That's not only the mark of great children's literature, it's the mark of great writing at any level.

SOUNDER is the story of a poor African American family in the late 19th century south. Sounder, the family's hunting dog, is responsible for much of the family income: he finds and tracks game that the father can eat and sell. Problems arise when the local white sheriff and his men think the family has become a little too prosperous. An event then happens which becomes a turning point in the oldest boy's life. (The story is told with painful honesty from his point of view.)

Author Armstrong masterfully drops the reader into a different era, an era we would like to forget. It's not a comfortable time and it's not a comfortable story, but it is a powerful one. The story is a simple one, but Armstrong paints on a large canvas, full of description so vivid and true that we feel we're there, walking on the cold ground, smelling the countryside, and even feeling the wetness of the tears and blood.

I believe it's significant that Sounder is the only character named in the book. This is the boy's story, but it could be any boy. He represents a sort of "every man," or "every child," if you will. The boy learns several important lessons along the way, some of them coming from unlikely sources.

SOUNDER is one of those stories that not only entertain children, but teach them valuable lessons in human nature, relationships, and learning. A very, very important book for us all.

Summary: Like a roller coaster - some parts are good - some parts suc
Review: I had to read Sounder for a novel class. Judging by the cover I knew it will be a boring story and I was right. Some chapters didnt even make sense and it was confusing cuz the characters didnt have names except the dog Sounder. It was pretty boring. Only the end was good.

Summary: Sounder's Voice Is Heard
Review: This book tells the story of a sharecropper's family and their dog, Sounder. The story happens in the 19th century American South.

More importantly, I feel this story tells about courage and determination during hard times.

The focus is on Sounder because he is a hunting dog and a major contributor to the families' food supply. however, I think Sounder is the only character named in this story for deeper reasons.

When the father is taken to jail on some trumped-up charge, Sounder is seriously wounded trying to protect him. Despite his crippling injury, Sounder returns home. Sounder's recovery and persistance is a symbol of what the family members want to do. When the father returns, also crippled, the old dog, previously silent, lets out one last resounding, triumphant bark.

This is a compassionate and compelling book, one I couldn't put down. Even though it was sad, it was full of love.

Summary: Sounder
Review: I think this book is part good and part bad. It is a very touching story but it has too much inappropriate words in it like s)ex if you take off the sign and there is not enough romance and love!

Summary: O ya Sounder read it
Review: I liked Sounder by William H. Henshaw. It is about a boy in the 1900's whose father is a sharecropper and he gets taken to jail because he steals meat from the big house. Sounder the boy's dog get's shot because he tries to save the father and the boy goes out to look for Sounder. His dad has to go on probation and the boy meets a teacher at school who helps him read. The boy goes out to look for his father and then reads with the teacher that has three lights in his room and the boy looks for his father and sounder and.... I would reccomend this book because it teaches you alot about the Depression and I wouldn't recommend this book because the boy has no name.

Summary: classic children's book
Review: Sound won a Newberry. And because it is a pretty good book. It's a coming of age story for a young black male. It's about family, death, love, and god. Sounder is at the core--not physically there, but in the boy's mind (and I don't know that Armstrong ever named any of the characters except the dog). He isn't there except at the beginning and the end. But hey, this is a great book. Get it for your kids and enjoy.

Summary: Sounder the Lab
Review: The book sounder was a very good book for me to read. This book was a realistic fiction book to me. I liked it because it was exciting and you don't know what is going to happen next. I mean, this book could be real! It sounds like it is real to me. The book was going to be based on a ture story. When I bought the book it had a .com in the back that talked about the author and it was suppose to be based on his life. After he read the book over, he made a few changes and it still didn't sound right, and it is suppose to be a childrens book, and it's 362 pages long! So finally he made the story not based on his life, but the life of a fictional boy. Now the bookis only 116 pages long.

This book is like the book Shiloh because the stories are based on dogs and how they live and how they are treated. The two books are also based on two boys. This book tells how the boy lives( he doesn't have a name in the book.) The boy lived in a very poor family and his father was sent away. The boy took care of his family. He had many difficult situations. The boy and Sounder (his dog) missed their father terribly.

I recommednd this book because it makes me appreciate my life and how lucky I am.
