Summary: Response to feminist complaints
Review: I just wanted to respond to all of those outraged women who say that the Rowan is a "woman hater" (to quote one reviewer). They complain because the Rowan decides to marry and have children thereby "losing all her power". The Rowan does not lose any power, she does not quit her job, and when you read later books you see that she remains one of the most powerful people (male or female) around. Every one still respects her and her husband does not control her. She merely gets the added joy that children can bring. Don't worry that this is a story about a woman who has power and career and then gives it up for a domestic life because this is not that kind of story. She has power, freedom, a career, a loving supportive husband and wonderful children. I believe the Rowan is a wonderful example of a woman who has a demanding job but still is able to experience the joys that being a mother can bring.
This is a wonderful story with engaging well devoloped characters. I reccomend it whole heartedly

Summary: THE ROWAN - A LOOK AT A FACINATING POSSIBLE FUTURE
Review: I like to read fantasy fiction but had never thought of sci-fi fantasy until the day I went wandering through the public library looking for something different instead of the usual romantic mystery novel I usually read. The first thing that caught my eye was the cover of the book which showed a remarkable looking women and after reading the synopsis I thought it sounded different. When I got home I decided to take a quick glance before cooking dinner. Once into the book I couldn't put it down and I was hooked. The Rowan is a facinating girl and later woman with amazing powers and a strong will of her own which she exibit as a baby when she lets the whole universe know she is alive, trapped and hungry. From this point on the universe is not the same. It tells of her growing up and her loneliness. I especially loved the way Anne McCaffrey introduced the love of her life and our first encounter with the unusual deadly enemy the universe encounters. The Rowan has everything we love; a great heroine and her love, suspence and the feeling that this type of future could be waiting for us. This was the first Anne McCaffrey book I had ever read. I couldn't wait to read the sequals and because this book had been out for a while I was able to go right into the future books of the series. When I caught up to the latest it just drove me nuts waiting to see what was going to happen. I WAS HOOKED AND YOU WILL BE TOO. The ROWAN is an amazing woman and she is there through the whole series with her amazing future. If you have never been interested in science fiction or fantasy I guarantee you will be hooked by this book and of course, just like me hooked into all Anne McCaffrey's books and I was amazed to discover how real these books seem. I have read the Rowan 3 times and am now ordering it and all the series in hardcover so my daughter can enjoy them the way I have and will continue to in the future. I only buy hardcover books when it's a series I feel strongly about and The Rowan is one of these books!!!!

Summary: The best sci-fi from McCaffrey in years....!
Review: I love McCaffrey's works. She has enchanted me with the Dragonrider series and caught my heart with such books as the Coelura and The Girl Who Heard Dragons. But with the Rowan, Ms. McCaffrey has gone above and beyond her own ability. I LOVED the Rowan so much! It tells a story of courage, love and life. It makes you long for more and wishe that YOU were Jeff Raven or Afra Lyon or the Rowan herself. It is possibly the best book that McCaffrey has written in many years. It's not about the struggle between human and hive creatures, it's about the struggle of one girl, alone and scared, who triumphs above those that would keep her down. I cried. A lot. And I needed to. I could relate to the Rowan in so many ways. I wanted to know her and hold her. I loved her.

Those things may sound weird, but that's just the way I feel. I also love the other books in the series. Especially Damia and Lyon's Pride. Great Books! Marvelous Work! I've said it once, I'll say it agian: Anne McCaffrey is the Queen of Science Fiction! NO ONE SURPASSES HER!!!! NO ONE!!! She rules!

Thanx, Storyweaver

Summary: I must admit though, I'm partial to Damia
Review: I love the Rowan, it was the first Anne McCaffrey book I ever read. I thought she did a splendid job of the Rowan's aging, it wasn't too dragged out and long. And then, when the book slowed down and she was grown up, the transition was very graceful and fit well. The only part I didn't like, was that some of the Hiver information was confusing, and I extremly dislike how whiny she gets toward the end. Also, the way she treats her children is very odd. Maybe in the future parenting will be distant, but it seemed to me like she favored several children over others. Anne's writing just got a little confused and unbalanced in character portrayel towards the end, but who knows. Maybe she was doing that on purpose to prepare us for the next book. Overall, I thought the book was excellent and very imaganitive, while still realistic.

Summary: What A Wonderful Love Story!
Review: I loved the whole book. There wasn't a part I didn't enjoy! I've read and reread The Rowan so many times I've lost count! My favorite part is when Rowan falls in love with Jeff Raven. For us regular folk, falling in love is a long and often painful experience. We learn who they are and what they stand for, over a very long time period. And more often than not, we are fooled. But with the Rowans and Jeffs mind merge, they know every thought and feeling each has ever had. They know instantly what kind of person each is and what they stand for. There are no secrets. It takes time for us to fall in love because it takes time to learn what kind of person each is. But to know in an instant...Wouldn't that make falling in love a whole lot safer? I think Anne did a wonderful job with the romance part of the book. (she did great on the other too, but Ijust loved this part the best) She took all the months and sometimes years it takes to really know someone and showed us what it would be like if we knew everything in an instant.

Summary: The Tower Grows Stronger
Review: I picked up the book, unknowing what it was about, my friend told me she enjoyed it so I figured I would give it a try. Within the first hour of reading I was unable to put the book down, even when I was tired. . . I read until 6:00 AM, starting at 12:00 AM, and had finished half of this book, one of the best ones that I have ever read. If you like Sci-fi/Fantasy and are at least remotely interested in ESP. . . then this book "The Rowan" is definately for you.

Summary: It was good but what about the ones before it?
Review: I really liked this bok but no one is talking about Pegasus in Flight and To Ride Pegasus! Those were my favorites! The Rowan was good but near the end I got bored. I was thinking, "Just a few more pages then its over." Of course it ended explosively and I liked the rest of the series. I did like the book and would reccommend it to everyone.

Summary: Sreaming Sci-Fi
Review: I Reread this book over and over again! Each time I get something new out of it because the characters are so invigorating! It is a must read for everyone, the story of a child whose screams deafened a planet and the way she grew up. I found it fasinating, the way Rowan deals with having a high talent. Her personality and characters not only in this book, but also in the other three books that came after. This book really hooked me onto Ann McCaffrey, and I think it will hook anyone who is a sci-fi fan of great writers!

Summary: This is the best book I've ever read!
Review: I thought this book was great. The Rowan is an interesting and well developed character, as is Jeff Raven. I think it is very cleverly written and provokes a lot of thought. I also think it's neat because the settings really stars and moons). As my friend said, "I like space. Space is good." I totally agree. If you want to read a spectacular novel, pick up The Rowan. -JG
