Rating: Summary: A disgrace to Rowans everywhere Review: An enjoyable tale through most of the story. Im sorry but if you write a story about a strong woman do not marry her off and breed her. The story was wonderful up untill the point where the character lost all power to become a wife and mother. Please why do people want to read that. Women do that everyday, we dont need to read about it from an author, who usually makes her female characters amazing. I lost all respect for the character when she only cared about her husband and child, and not her career. As I said before the first 3/4 of the book was enjoyable but the last bit ruined it for me.
Rating: Summary: loved it the first time i read it! Review: Anne McCaffrey is by far a very talented writer. And the Rowan is one of her best. It explores a lonely childhood with heart. It makes you cry in spots and makes you cheer in others. I have read and reread this book . I can find someting I missed in reading it the time before every time i've read it.I also have Damia, Damia's Children and Lyon's Pride and have enjoyed them all. It ranks up there with Roddenberry in exploring space and our REACTION to it and the beings in it.
Rating: Summary: Great start of the series! Read them all and enjoy! Review: Anne McCaffrey's Talent series are my favorite of all her books. The beginning, when the Rowan is found, really got me to feel for her and empathize with her. After that, the story of her growing up kept me riveted to the book,it was so real. Then the book gently slid into her grown-up life, and it made me both laugh and feel sad with her as she searched for a Talent to work with and a Talent to love. The way it all worked out - Afra,Jeff,Reidinger - is really interesting and exciting.A good book to begin the series and a great series!Enjoy!
Rating: Summary: An Interesting Future has Been Invented!! Review: Anne McCaffrey's world of the Talents is very interesting and well-written. She has put together a simple story that flows very nicely, has a magnificent pace, and interesting characters that are worth caring about. The Rowan tells the story of an orphan girl- called the Rowan - who has an immense amount of Talent (which can be used to read minds, teleport, and many others). She is found in a horrific mudslide after she blasts her earsplitting mental cries and is taken up and placed in a high seat of power. This is a fascinating story that I do recommend. Anne McCaffrey does have a good deal of talent for storytelling and she puts it to good use. I look forward to the rest of the series! Enjoy! -Taylor

Rating: Summary: This book encourages a reader to use their imagination. Review: Even though some say understanding comes with age, all fifteen years of me say this book was beyond excellent. I am most attracted to books that encourage me to think, creating the images in my mind. Anne McCaffrey has just become one of my favorite authors. Very few people can give the gift of an adventure that you will remember for years to come. Anne McCaffrey pulled it off quite nicely, and for that, she has my respect, and thanks.

Rating: Summary: for the most part, very good Review: For the most part, I liked this book. This book first follows the life of the child known only as the Rowan as she grows into adulthood. The Rowan is a powerful telepath and telekinetic and she is trained accordingly. Unfortunately, her abilities tend to set her apart from others, and she's often lonely. I enjoyed the book, at least until the point where the Rowan is telepathically contacted by Jeff. It's a love at first sight situation, only the Rowan doesn't even have to see Jeff before she falls in love with him. The suddeness of her attatchment to him bothered me, especially since I didn't always like Jeff. Also, Anne McCaffrey dealt with the threat of alien invasion almost too quickly and neatly. For those reasons, I'm giving this book a four instead of a five. However, in spite of the fact that I didn't always like the second half of the book, I thought the first half was wonderful. Anne McCaffrey handles mental abilites and the impact they would have on society very well, and I enjoy reading about her telepaths more than I do anyone else's. This is definitely a worthwhile read and reread.
Rating: Summary: More of a romance in sci-fi clothing...Predictable Review: I am a big fan of McCaffrey's Pern series, but was dissapointed with The Rowan. I found the story shallow and predictable with very little in the way of science fiction or fantasy--it's really just a poorly disguised romance between two telepaths/telekinetics: The Rowan and Jeff Raven. But I suppose if you like that sort of thing, then this would be up your alley. I just like a little more substance in my reading, and it wasn't here.
Rating: Summary: one of the best except.... Review: i have to say that i am an avid fan of all McCaffrey's books - i'm waiting with baited breath for the publication of the next book on the talent series "Pegasus in Space". how many actually know there was another one on the way? but reading through the other reviews for The Rowan, i'm feeling quite releived that i'm not the only one who saw some terrible inconsistencies! what happened, Anne?!? but it was great, and i can recomend it and all of her other books to anyone willing to delve into the realm of sci-fi and fantasy
