Rating: Summary: A bunch of losers Review: This book was about people who are losers. People who remain friend or lovers with people they went to grade school with because they don't have enough self-esteem to get a real life. The main characters in this book live in a microscopic world of limited emotions, selfish neurosis and fear of life. It was pathetic.
Rating: Summary: Not sure what all the hype is about Review: I'm not sure why I finished this book as fast as I did. I think I was looking for something that would make me care about Carrie more than I did. But I just never felt connected to her. I kept feeling there was so much more that should have been told, and wasn't. Unsatisfied with the ending, too. Overall, it had its moments, but mostly I found myself wishing there was more "meat" to it. I think all the media hype has oversold its promise.
Rating: Summary: Almost Review: The premise of this novel -- how a life altering accident forces a young woman to make difficult choices is compelling and the book draws you in -- at first. But although Carrie' boyfriend comes out of his coma, the book never does. The NYC sections are especially weak. The boyfriend Kilroy is a pretentious bore and the sex scenes are silly. I thought the relationship of the heroine with her childhood friend was the most convincing in the book. But otherwise it fell short.
Rating: Summary: Good, quick read Review: I heard of this book via GMA's new book club. It was a good, quick read. I enjoyed the character's although at times, I found some of them a bit unbelievable. The author did write wonderfully. One of the things I enjoyed about this novel was it made you look inside and see what you would do if confronted with the same issue - Do I do what is expected of me or do I do what's best for me? ... I would recommend this book although I found the ending a bit predictable.
Rating: Summary: The push pull of being human Review: This is a book for all age groups...not just the young. It is the struggle of a young woman coming of age and hard choices are thrust at her. Does she do what others want, what is considered by others the right thing to do, or does she chance it and strike out on her own life leaving behind all that had been familiar and all the family and people of her life before. Tough choices. It answers her question: who do we become. What other people want us to be or true to ourselves....there is a surprising answer in this book. How much loyalty is destructive. How much carefree abandon is cruelty....a fine line this book explores. I loved it and couldn't put it down until the very end. Jacque Jacque
Rating: Summary: reader from Illinois Review: I would just like to say thanks a million to "dissapointed from Chicago" for ruining the ending of the book before I even read it! When reviewing a book, it's not a good idea to give away the ending. I bet you do that with movies too.
Rating: Summary: Disappointed..... Review: Overall, I was disappointed. The idea was good and the plot and characters could have been much more developed without the cheap sex scenes. Ann Packer has talent, but needs to "clean up" her story lines. It's sad to me to see the lack of Christian standards in her characters.
Rating: Summary: Great book! Review: This is more a comment, than a review: I loved this book! If you want to get lost in a novel's world and its characters, sit down, relax and enjoy this fantastic read.
Rating: Summary: Irritating but Good Review: This is not an easy book to review for me. I absolutely did not like the main character and narrator of the book, Carrie. She was so self absorbed and cold, cold, cold. Carrie is already feeling she wants out of her life long relationship with her boyfriend, Mike, when the accident happens that makes him a quadrapalegic. The long and the short of it is that she bails, totally. She just up and moves away from her entire family and friends without telling them anything. She goes to New York where she proceeds into aa relationship with a much older man with his own skeletens "in his closet" They have a very sexual relationship. It troubles me that she is able to so easily turn her back on somebody she has loved her entire life. It is also irritating to me that she gets 2 men to love her and she treats them both so shabbily basically. Alway saying "I'm sorry" like that makes everything OK. In spite of the fact that Carrie is not a likable character to me, many of the other characters are likable and made the book worth finishing for me. The writing is very good and it really deals with some real life issues. I personally just can't imagine not standing by my man no matter what.
Rating: Summary: story keeps you reading and turning the pages! Review: This was a wonderfuly crafted story. While the story was sad at the core, the characters were brought to life and the essence of the human spirit came through as it was hit with a life-altering event. The book makes you think "what would you do if" and it was quite a serious and deep plot. I thoroughly enjoyed it and look forward to other books in the future by this author.
