Summary: it was a well plotted, and surprisingly good book.
Review: and I say surprising because I never buy books in a supermarket, in my opinion they simply cannot be good. I don't know why I picked Neverwhere up, but I'm glad I did. Gaiman's terrific cast of characters was a sprawling map of human emotions. In this book no one was the sole hero, and there were more than one enemy. It seemed every character had a role panning out on a different level; Vandemar and Croup are vicously evil and revel in it comically, ("We collect [payment]in full" "With interest!" "And meat hooks!")Richard's stuggle between being the hook or the bait , and Door with her slightly yielding determination. I loved nearly every page of this, and once I get it back from whomever I loaned it too. I'll read it again. Like all good books, there's always a tid-bit I might've missed that'll turn up like a jewel the second time to make this picture even clearer.

Summary: A surreal and powerful fairtale!
Review: Neil Gaiman possesses an amazing skill, an enviable skill. The ability to tell a great story. As I write this I as I am 17 years old and have hopes to someday become a film maker. I sincerely hope that If I ever make it that far, I'll be able to someday weave tales half as wonderful and share them with others as he his shared his with us. Thank you Mr. Gaiman! For reminding us what a wonderful thing fiction can be.

Review: Picked this up and couldn't put it down. A thoroughly enjoyable ride. Can't wait for STARDUST.

Summary: I didn't want to like this book, but...
Review: this turned out to be one of the better suprises I have recently read . I used to be a reader of the"Sandman" series but fell out of touch with the series years ago. Never the less, I did read a few Gaiman short stories and the wonderful "Good Omens". So when "Neverwhere" came out I eventually bought it and just finished it last night, staying up til the early hours to read the last few chapters. I really did not care for the beginning of the book, mainly because it felt like it had been "done before". But somewhere after the fifth or sixth chapter, I became immersed in the world of London Below. The marquis de Carabas, Old Bailey, and even Croup and Vandermar. What wonderful characters! I now honestly look forward to the next book, and realized all over again why I fell in love with Gaiman's style of writing.

Summary: An utterly dissapointing fantasy from a favorite author
Review: Boring. Tedious. Predictable. Dull. Words I never would have associated with Neil Gaiman. Until now.

I cannot believe this book was written by the author of "Sandman" (for DC Comics) and "Good Omens" (with Terry Pratchett) both of which I enjoyed immensely. To put it simply, this book reads like what somebody attempting to write like Neil Gaiman would turn out, and not at all the sort of thing I would expect from Mr. Gaiman himself.

I read "Good Omens" twice (and will probably read it again. I re-read all of the "Sandman" periodically). Not only will I never read the garbage that is "Neverwhere" again, I regret having wasted a portion of my life reading it in the first place.

Summary: An engaging page turner. Perfect for a long plane ride.
Review: I also saw the BBC movie first. It was very good but frankly I like a good book better than watching the tube. I was not disappointed. It was intriquing how so much of the relationships between the magic London Below and the known London Above could be left unexplored and incomprehensible without compromising the storyline. A satisfied reader is a forgiving reader.

The historical references to how London's sewer and underground evolved was a nice touch and most appreciated.

Summary: Neverwhere...Everywhere
Review: The day before leaving for London Richard Mayhew was not enjoying himself. Thats what Sandman/ DreamLord Neil Gaiman says in the prologue to this book. A complete masterpiece, a magical journey through the imagination of a man who lives in the bridge between sleep and the wake. Gaiman is a genious, a sensible genious.

Summary: Unexpectedly charming underworld
Review: I've read this book three times now, and it has grown on me more every time. Things that seemed simple on first reading are much less so in hindsight. 'Neverwhere' is a wonder. It makes me think of what would would have happened if Vonnegut had collaborated on an adventure novel with Charles Dickens.

I think on rereading the overall theme of the story is charity, charity as a virtue, as part of the human heart. What we are with it, what we are without it.

It's not Gaiman's masterpiece, that's probably Mr. Punch, or the new short story collection 'Smoke and Mirrors'. But it is a charming book, with many fine moments and some thrilling and beautiful ideas and characters. I recommend it wholeheartedly.

Summary: Lame
Review: I made it half way through. But come on, aside from the character mentally noting several times that his life was gone, the author made no attempt to make him appear at all concerned that he had lost everything and was now in a completely alien environment. Even worse: Could anyone possibly protect door from the killers? No...only Hunter could stand a chance. And GEE, guess who shows up as the bodyguard a few pages later. Oh Hunter! There you are! Glad they worked you in so well. And the lame image of the "knockout amazon" was too much. Anytime a strong female character appears in these shallow books, she has to be stacked. Please. Also, the characters of Mr. Croup and Mr. Vandawhatever were shamelessly stolen from the Bond movie "Diamonds are Forever." So I guess what I'm saying is skip this one.

Summary: Comic book superstar Gaiman writes a super dark fantasy
Review: Three years ago, Richard Mayhew left Scotland for London, expecting to take the securities world by storm. Instead, Richard is just become an average bloke, bored with his life. While escorting his girl friend Jessica to a fancy restaurant, Richard finds a girl bleeding from a switchblade wound. Jessica wants Richard to stay pout of it, but for once ignores her and takes the girl to the safety of his pad.

Richard may have reconsidered his gallant act if he knew what he just got involved in due to the injured woman. For he now knows that underneath the London streets, deep in the abandoned stations that dot the tubes and in the most obscure sewer tunnels lies an underground culture that insists on anonymity from the surface world. Knowledge could mean death.

NEVERWHERE is a wonderful magic carpet ride into a nightmarish world that will be a fantasy reader's dream. The story line is humorous, crisp, but utterly frightening. The characters on both sides of the street are intriguing, especially those who literally live in the underbelly of the city. Comic book superstar (see the Sandman for an incredible experience), Neil Gaiman has scribed a thriller that is bound to make him a household name among fans of dark fantasies.
