Summary: One of the great fantasies
Review: A brilliant and totally involving tale of a young man whose comfortable life in modern London is turned upside down and inside out--funny, surprising, fascinating--the best fantasy I've read since "The Last Unicorn."

Summary: Awesome
Review: This book just flies off the pages. The charaters are so easy to like (or hate, or fear) and the world is so real I found myself up until 2 A.M. just to get to the finish and when I finally got there I was just sad that their wasn't more. I hope Neil Gaiman writes a sequel. Excellant book.

Summary: "Neverwhere" - all form, no substance
Review: Neil Gaiman's "Neverwhere" certainly has potential for greatness. The story line was intruiging, the characters (mostly) likeable, and the setting unique. Unfortunately, it was lacking the magic of Douglas Adams' (who Gaiman has been compared to) work in the "Hitchhiker's" Trilogy and the "Dirk Gently" series. I was waiting for something great to happen, and something finally did - it ended. I still enjoyed the story, but it would have been better if written by someone else.

Summary: A bit overated
Review: The characters were very unique and the setting straight out of a child's dream, but overall the book was slow. I felt it lacked that crucial element that makes a book into a "book you can't put down". Perhaps I just expected too much, reading all those great reviews. So judge for yourself - give it a try.

Summary: Dive into swirling darkness!
Review: Dark, mysterious, confusing. A great book that seems to get hold of you by its own magic spell, a spell that captures you and engulfes you if you want it or not.

Do you dare entering the dark realms of the underground? The paths are slippery and dangerous, but never fear - Neil Gayman will take you by the hand and lead you through it safely...

Summary: Magical and Wonderous!
Review: As a child I loved three authors - Lewis Carroll, J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis. As an adult I've found bits of the same magic in Stephen King and Robert McCammon and a smattering of other author's short stories (Clive Barker's Cabal for one).

I was completely captivated by "Neverwhere" the way I was captivated when I first read "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe". I could not put this book down, and I actually cried when I was done. I didn't want it to end!

I am so happy to finally find a writer who weaves the worlds I would love to be lost in as an adult. I've recently read "Stardust" and am stacking up everything else Mr. Gaiman has done.

Summary: Gaiman's at a loss without illustrators.
Review: I always assumed Sandman owed it's greatness to Gaiman's writing, and logically assumed his novel would be similarly compelling. Not so! His editor should find a new line of work...there are several cringingly awful sentences. I can ignore that sort of thing if the story is suspenseful, but Gaiman failed me there too. On the whole it reads like something a young boy might write in junior high. Every character was utterly two dimensional. In fact, the only two that were even remotely interesting were the villains, who were comfortably evil and somewhat amusing. The main characters were just abysmal...Richard was beyond foolish, and Door had no substance beyond a great name and predictably "pixie-ish" looks. That said, I'm sure Neverwhere would make a great graphic novel. It reads a bit like a hastily conceived storyboard, so perhaps Gaiman was unable to step outside of that mindset. (For an excellent graphic novel, try Cages by Dave McKean.)

Verdict: Gaiman is, like Richard, fully "out of his depth."

Summary: I couldn't put it down!
Review: This book was fantastic! It twisted reality and fantasy around and around each other, until, like the main character of the book - the reader begins to think "ah, that could happen." I would recommend this book to anyone who misses books that could raise goosebumps, without including so much sex or gore as to make one sick. This was a great read.

Summary: Just a thought..
Review: I read a review by a reader that basically stated, "I was just happy to find a fantasy/mythological novel placed in a non Dungeons & Dragons type environment. Dear, if you can't find good fantasy in contemporary settings, you need to find a new bookstore. 'Nuff said.
