Summary: I am enchanted with Neil Gaimans Neverwhere
Review: I had never heard of Neil Gaiman, took a chance on the title and cheap price(bargin table) of the book. I just love it when I pick a good one! He had me by the 22nd page. His characters are endearing, frightening and funny. What an imagination the man has. He was able to pull me into his world with such ease. Can't wait for his next book, he is now on my favorite list.

Summary: Sorely disappointing to this Sandman fan
Review: Gaiman's "Neverwhere" spends most of it's 385 (in paperback) pages trudging the reader through a drab and dreary world of rats and sewage, which would be fine if there was a captivating storyline or alluring characters. There isn't. Richard and his main travelling companion Door are likeable enough, however this tale is almost completely devoid of the mystery, majesty, and sublime wonder which suffuses Gaiman's 75-issue Sandman epic. If I didn't know otherwise I would probably think this was written by an unpublished hack. In truth, the two stars is kind; if I could have given 1 1/2, I would have done so.

Summary: Inventive and filled with violence and evil
Review: Neverwhere is a well-crafted novel. Gaiman takes some risks and makes the characters compelling.I'd like to focus on some of the characteristics that others haven't mentioned. The book is dark. The primary evil-doers are invincible callous killers who enjoy doing evil acts. They have loyalty to each other as their only redeeming quality. They inflict a lot of pain on others. In addition, the setting itself is quite dark. Slavery and wanton cruelty seem to be common, and only wealth and power save one from a miserable and short existence. In addition, the book is a little limited in its female characters. Both of the major ones are stunningly beautiful. One is hypercompetent and dies for it. The other is young and fragile and constantly needs the help of the average bloke protagonist. The girlfriend is predatory and obviously too far above her station - she's trying to do well and thus must be avoided. It's a problem.

Summary: Gaiman's Magical Touch Creates Another Modern Classic
Review: After the widly popular comic book "Sandman", I didn't think Mr. Gaiman could top himself. I was so wrong! Neverwhere is an absolutely captivating novel, full of suspense and drama, with just a touch of un-reality to make it fascinating. I visited London (the setting for some of the book) shortly after reading Neverwhere, and while in tube stations and on train platforms, I began to imagine Gaiman's "London Below" as not too far fetched.... Even for those who are not familiar with Mr. Gaiman's previous work, this book will delight anyone with an imagination; I hated to finish it.

Summary: My Favorite Book
Review: I had never read anything by Neil Gaiman, in fact I had never even heard of him. Then I stumbled upon Neverwhere in the grocery store and he became my favorite author. When I was done with this book I gave it to everyone in my family, then to my friends. Then I read it again. It is my favorite book. Gaiman is an incredible story teller and I cannot wait for his next novel.

Review: "Neverwhere" is everything you would want in a novel: it's funny, intelligent, exciting, suspenseful, romantic and sexy. The book is dark, strange, witty and wonderful, while the prose is beautiful. The story will stay with me a long time...I loved it.

Summary: Odinary people living ordinarylives are so critical
Review: I'm writing this review not just to join the 197 previous people who reviewed this book, but to review some of the reviewers. I read Neverwhere last week while in Europe. This book entertained and enthralled me. No it's not a perfect book, and even if the ending is predictable---you knew he would hate his reclaimed life, and you knew he would want to go back---how can a few of you be so viscious in your reviews. Richard was ordinary. Richard was not captivating. Richard was boring. Richard did not fit in. Well guess what. Most of us ARE that way. We may each be unique, but we are all very much alike. As a college professor told me years ago---people want to be different, but not too different. As for the ending: If you have ever had your life shattered or merely turned upside down, then you know how badly you want your old life back, how much you wish things could be the ways things were. And it is human nature to WANT more than to HAVE. To sum up: Neverwhere is a really good book. Who cares if it doesn't change your life! If you're looking for a fantasy book to change your life then you need professional help. If you didn't like this book, then you are probably both very ordinary and very unhappy. If you're thinking about buying the book---just buy it. I mean, look at all the reviews! How many books inspire 200 reviews? Now I'll get off my soapbox. Thank you.

Summary: Neverwhere
Review: Neverwhere was awsome! I was bored and my friend told me to read this book. It was awsome! It was a darker version of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Richard has to Arthur Dent's brother, they're basically the same person. The Marquis was great. He dies and then comes back to life like dying happens everyday, and Mr. Croup and Mr. Vandemar are the defintion of evil and gross (they eat dead animals). Door is just there. She's kind of boring. The end is predictable but awsome just the same. Long live Neil Gaimen

Summary: Down the rabbit hole into London Underground
Review: Alice meets the Wizard of Oz - and you'll never want to leave the underground. This was an amazing book! Living in NYC it made me really think about those random "dead ends" and the gap between the subway and the platform. (an idea that I am sure JK Rowling got from Neil...) I really wanted to visit the London Underground (and I don't mean the subway) after reading this delightful and absorbing novel. The characters were well written and memorable. This was one of the best books I have read in ages. I could not put it down and began to re-read it the moment I finished! Neil Gaiman not only has a fantastic imagination, he also has a great sense of humor and we are just so lucky that he has decided to share them and his amazing talent with us. I can't wait to read Stardust! If you read one book this year - read this one. A magical, mysterious romp in a world you can only hope really exists. My next vacation is going to be to London Underground. Pick this book up and I promise you will not want to put it down.
