Rating: Summary: monster Review: By: Walter Dean Myers **** I rate this book a **** star book because it gives you details but it lets you hanging until the end. This book is about a 22 year old boy named Steve Harmon. He was committed for robbing a gas station. He did this crime with two others. They were Richard Evans and James King. In this book you will find out what each person will do to complete this crime. You will also see what James King did and why he is not just a robber. Some strength in this book is when they tell you what he does during court and also in his cell. There are also some weaknesses in this book one I would say is when the judge talks to people in the stands. They would sit there and talk to each other about something that does have anything to do if the court. It is better when they ask questions. I would recommend this book to anybody that would like to hold off to the end to find out what happened. I would also recommend this book to people that are kind of into robbing and then getting caught for doing the crime. For the people that would like to no what court and jail id like.
Rating: Summary: Crying at night Review: My parents courted by playing the "first line" game. One person says the first line of a favorite book of theirs and the other person guesses the piece of literature quoted. "Monster"'s first line is a doozy, and I doubt anyone, once hearing it, could do anything but guess its title correctly. "The best time to cry is at night, when the lights are out and someone is screaming for help". So writes Steve Harmon, the sixteen year-old accused felon and hero of this story. Myers adeptly creates a new form of fiction in this Printz winner of a book. Finding jail too painful to endure, Steve recounts his life and court appearances by styling his journal in the form of a movie. The title of this movie "Monster" refers to a statement made by the leading prosecutor about Steve, the defendant. Falsely accused of aiding and abetting a robbery and consequent murder of a local drugstore and its manager, Steve recounts his current status, his past hopes and dreams, and the pain he must endure day to day. Kids reading this book might have some difficulty grasping exactly how this book's protagonist is connected to the murder. Certainly there isn't a detailed description of the extent to which Steve was connected to the killers in the neighborhood. But Myers gives his readers a lot of credit, believing they'll figure out what's going on, on their own. Steve's experiences in jail are a pared down version of the t.v. show "Oz". There are several references to sexual assault, in addition to violence and some mild language. I wouldn't be handing this book to your five-year-old but for any kid that's curious about jail or being "tough", this book can do you no wrong.
Rating: Summary: Choices Review: Monster is a book that shows you that if you make the wrong choices or hang out with the wrong people only bad things will come. In 16 year old Steven Harmon's case it means possibly spending the rest of his life behind bars for something that he might have not even have done. You really get into this book and you're actually hoping that Steven will get out of it somehow. The book Monster shows you not to make bad decisions.
Rating: Summary: The Truth Review: I think this book is a great book! It's the best I've read in a long time. It focuses on the struggles and hardships some people have to grow up with.Steve did nothing at all but walk out of a store and because he's a black man in Harlem got tried for murder. The prosecutors used his own neighborhood against him in his trial. They used the people who grew up with against him. Like it's his fault he was born in the hood. He was just another kid until one day the cops came to his door and arrested him for a felony charge of murder. He then at 16 YEARS OLD had to go to prison and see thing that no 16 year old needs to see. He learned about how bad it could really be if he chose the wrong path. He saw gang fights, fights with guards and even gang rapes while in prison. I think something like that would continue to affect you for the rest of your life. Even if he was found innocent and the charges were dropped, how could he ever forget some of the things he had seen? How would his family take it? Im sure people would look at you alot different after a thing like that.I think in a way it could help you though also. If he was messing up Im sure this scared him straight, or at least you would know that you always have it better than someone. Never take wht you got for granted, because you will notice it when it's gone.
Rating: Summary: Powerful Review: While difficult to read because it is written as a screenplay, Monster should be read in all classrooms to discuss the power of the system. It will prove to you how powerful words can be.
Rating: Summary: Another Good Book Review: Monster was a a very good book. The positives about this book are that you get a sense of how the character feels during his whole ordeal in prison and on trial. Because part of the book is written like a movie, we could imagine how it would play out on film. The slang or street language fits well into this book. The setting was good too, for the book takes place in New York which seems like a dangerous place. The only negatives we find with this book was it was slow paced with little action.Other than that ,this book was good and we would recommend it to a friend.
Rating: Summary: Monster Review Review: A horrifying story of a 16 year old boy, Steve Harmon, on trial for committing a crime. A crime involving murder. Was Steve really involved in this crime or was he just set up? Read the book and find out how someone can be changed from the affects of jail.
