Rating: Summary: A refreshing urban fiction Review: Well well well...finally a teacher pick/chick book that can be related to by the people the book is written about! This book is an excellent choice for high school reading classes. It's only a few pages shy of 200 and it's broken down into sections that are interlinked but are yet still diverse enough to keep the readers' attention. It has a few wickedly traumatizing shake ups to satisfy the Stephen King fan and enough social and economic problems to give the inner city kids something to relate to. The people aren't perfect either. This fact even gives the analyzing logic nerd a hard time finding things to complain about. So who wouldn't like this book? Well, quite a few people won't really like it but they will at least either appreciate it or refrain from publicly putting it down. The only problem audience I notice with this book is the "I hate the world!" people who wouldn't want to waste their precious complaining time reading a good novel. I recommend this book for everyone who is mature enough to handle a little violence, sex, and the occasional deranged... lady that sleeps with preachers or kills janitors.
Rating: Summary: Why are there only 7 reviews? Review: Why are there more reviews for "If this world were mine" than the "Women of Brewster Place"? this was a wonderful novel and I recommend it to anyone. Please, if you want to read something that really "keeps it real", then read Gloria Naylor's books. She tells the real problems of the African American community.
Rating: Summary: Yeah, it's depressing, but it's also wonderful Review: Why do books like this one get such sour reviews? Authors like Gloria Naylor, who isn't afraid of writing about the evil of the world, are rare. This book offers a glimpse at the reality of the urban destitute. Naylor is extremely insightful. The stories in this book are touching and very well-written. Naylor's talent for description is amazing. Her characters are realistic and full of emotions. I love absolutely everything about this book. This book is incredible.
