Rating: Summary: Very good. Review: This was a very good book. Well written and insightful. It seemed to drag on a bit too much at some points but on the whole, it kept me interested. I definitely recommend it.
Rating: Summary: Review of the book City of Ember Review: This was an excellent book. It shows you what could happen to the world someday. We all may have to live in a city that is lit by lightbulbs because we may have destroyed our true world. In this book Lina is a 12 year old girl who happens to come uppon an very old piece of paper which seemed to have instructions on it. But to bad for her her little sister Poppy found the paper first and chewed big chuks out of it. Lina and her friend Doon must find out what the instructions say so they can save there city. Or maybe even find a way out.
Rating: Summary: The City of Ember Review: This was definitely one of those books you just can't put down because you can't wait to see what happens next! The characters are fabulously developed, as the story is, too. I enjoyed this book so much, that immediately after reading it, I read the book out loud to my fourth grade class. The students LOVED it and have been begging me all year to read the sequel to them. We eagerly anticipate its' release.
The students found themselves trying desperately to piece the clues of the story together. As a class we would mull over the clues and foreshadowing and make predictions about what was to come. Each student had a copy of the Instructions for Egress that we filled in together as we read. I have never seen students more eager to finish recess so we could sit down and find out what happens next!
As an adult, I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this juvenile fiction. I found myself telling my friends all about it! As for my fourth grade class and myself, we give this book 22 thumbs up!!
Rating: Summary: Reader Be Aware Review: When I first noticed this book, I figured it would be similar to Inkheart, Harry Potter, and similar books. Boy was I mistaken. This book is for small children. Besides the fact that the font is extremely large, the sentences are short, choppy, and down to the point. Example: "The book was on the top shelf. He reached for the book but it was too high. He got a ladder." I felt like I had been knocked back about 6 years of school. Setting aside the writing style, the book's storyline was actually pretty good. It is sure to entertain those who enjoy fantasy and adventure type books.
Rating: Summary: WOW! Review: WOW! I came across this book while browsing and thought it looked interesting. Now I'm surprised I hadn't heard more about it, because it's unbelieveable. I actually broke plans with family to finish it because I could not put it down. I was intrigued by the book's mysteries, such as: Why are these people in an unusual dark city, and where is it located (since they know nothing of an outside world)? Why are they running out of supplies and who were the "builders" who put them there? Will the clever children who find a damaged note from the builders decipher its cryptic message? Not only was this story mysterious, suspenseful and well-written, but it contained powerful messages about striving for truth in a land of ignorance and not just following the status quo. The sequel, "People of Sparks," is also excellent.
