Rating: Summary: A book that pulls you into it as you read. Review: This book Starts out very confusing, but as you begin to read you begin to understand what the sub captain is planning on doing. The front of the book is confusing and makes you want to give up, but keep on reading no matter what for a thrilling last hundred pages packed with action. COOL BOOK!
Rating: Summary: Wonderful, but falls short of the movie Review: Clancy's wonderful story is captivating and brilliantly told, and is a good bet for all Clancy fans. However, the characters lack the substance provided by Connery and Baldwin in the wonderful movie. A word to readers: Don't be discouraged by the middle fourth of the book. The last half is excellent and will make this book a good use of your time. If you see the movie first, you will be slightly disappointed. But if this is your first Clancy book, you will go straight out and buy the rest.
Rating: Summary: A great book, but don't see the movie first! Review: Clancy's first book is a winner, although the movie detracts from the military stigma this book provides. Read the book and then see the movie. It will make the movie all that more pleasureable! A winner for a first try!
Rating: Summary: On a scale of 1-10, I give it an 11 Review: On a scale of 1-10, I give it an 11. Disregard the bad reviews of this book. One must be an aging hippie without a war to protest and the other's probably just venting. I'm setting the record straight. One, this was Tom Clancy's FIRST novel. It's only natural that he should suffer growing pains. Two, to the man from Tallinn, Estonia, I say it's not ludicrous. Back in 1975, there was an attempted defection of a Soviet nuclear mine sweeper to Sweden. It was led by the political officer. Furthermore, Captain Second Rank Ivan Putin WAS NOT the Red October's co-captain. He was the Red October's POLITICAL OFFICER. His murder was NECESSARY because Marko Ramius had a grudge against the Soviet Union because incompetent state doctors MURDERED his wife. Third, Tom Clancy treated both sides EQUALLY. If you'd read the book, you would have KNOWN THAT. Fourth, back to the aging hippie. If you don't like it, don't why did you waste your money on it? Write your own book set in a world where there's peace, love, and perpetual LSD trips.
Rating: Summary: A must read book! Review: The Hunt for Red October is a great book. It has a wonderful plot and storyline. The book allows you to see the story from the Red October and the Dallas, or the White House and from a whole bunch of places. It puts you right in the middle of all the military action. Once you pick up the book, you can't put it down, especially during the last pages where the pace picks up a lot. There is non stop action and adventure throughout the whole book. Tom Clancy did a great job on this book. For any of you who like action and suspence, read The Hunt for Red October.
Rating: Summary: Good Book, although a little monotonous at parts. Review: This is a good book, entertaining, and extremely captivating at the END. It gets a little dull at several parts, but it still has a good plot line. I don't give five stars unless they are really classics.
Rating: Summary: Highly overated; Clancy is better than this Review: I have read many of, and am a fan of, Tom Clancy's books, and have seen him mature as a writer. I say this because after reading this "novel," it was clear that he had a lot of maturing to do! 'The Hunt for Red October' was, I thought, nothing more than an excuse for putting a virtual glossary of submarine warfare terms onto the printed page. It really appeals only to people with an interest in naval affairs. That said, I have an interest in naval affairs too, and I still found it boring. However, it does function well in describing to the audience what the world of warfare under the sea is like. In some ways, the movie was better than the book, which is a rare occurence indeed. By the time he wrote 'Debt of Honor,' Clancy had learned quite a bit more about how to actually produce a good read, and it showed. Historically, of course, the book is quite important as it ushered in the age of the "technothriller" novel that is still very much with us.
Rating: Summary: A Great Book. Review: I initially read this book after I read Red Storm Rising, which I thought was (slightly) superior to its predecessor. This book was very good, very plot oriented, and very exciting, but there was not much in the way of character development. This was a great debut novel for Mr. Clancy. The only reason this wasn't as good as Red Storm Rising was because as this was his debut novel, he had to keep it kind of short, so he couldn't fit as much into it.
Rating: Summary: A MUST READ FOR ALL CLANCY FANS! ! ! ! ! Review: After reading PATRIOT GAMES, I really got interested in Mr. Clancy's novels. I then decided to read "Red OCtober." This book is superior to all other books tht I've read. The detail of the plot and the explanation of the technology is remarkable. I am 14 years of age and the author explains things ( I belive) extremely well. A great ending, to a great novel. Navy buffs would enjoy the book a lot. A must read. Also the movie is great. A great screenplay for a movie based on the book. It doesn't leave any key parts out. SEE THE MOVIE, TOO!!!!
Rating: Summary: Sheer Magneto-Hydrodynamic Drive in Motion! Review: The reason for me writing this review is two-fold. One, to 'bump-up' the average review rating, from four and a half stars, and Two, to tell you that this is THE best book I have ever read. I have no personal knowledge of the situations sub-mariners would encounter but it sounds pretty good to me, the tension he conveys in the pages allows you to imagine what it would be like if you were there in person. If you are even slightly interested in military fiction this would be my first recommendation.
