Summary: The Hunt For Red October
Review: This book is one that just to me says classic I mean it is so great. I love the way that the book is presented to the reader placing the reader in the room with the characters as if he or she was one of them. This book is so great it isn't like other books of this type. I mean most other military books are boring but this book keeps you on the edge of your seat it grabs you and never lets go. The Russia captian Ramius is one of the most developed charaters in the enrire story. Ryan is just to suprising no matter what happens he's always ready to say something smartelick. Truly action packed.

Summary: THE MOST COMPLEX BOOK I'VE EVER READ!
Review: This book has got to be one of Tom Clancy's best novels. There are so many factors of this story, you wonder how anybody could wrap up the story, and have it still make sense. It's not hard to see that he did some SERIOUS research for this story, yet he can still explain the military information meaningfully enough that almost anyone could understand it.

The main plot is, of course, the defection of the Red October. Now, I don't want to give away any secrets about the ending of the story, so I'll just tell you what I can without giving away the surprise; The Red October is defecting to the United States in search for freedom. Captain Marko Ramius pulls a nuclear reactor scare, in hope of frightening the lieutenants and other lower rank Comrades off of the submarine. The captain said that he and some other officers would stay behind with the submarine, to set charges and explode it, so that the Americans "Will not get their dirty hands on it", while the other seamen were rescued by the Americans and taken back to Russia. If it worked out perfectly, and nobody found out, the younger Comrades would go back to Russia and say, "Yes, Marko Ramius, being the courageous man he is, stayed after with the submarine, and detonated charges, whereupon it exploded. Well, Comrade Political Officer, you don't need to worry about the Americans getting their hands on it." But of course Marko Ramius did not actually stay after on the submarine, and infact the Red October never even exploded. How can this be?, you may ask. Well, I guess you'll just have to read the book and find out...

Summary: To Be Or Not To Be
Review: This was an average book at best. At parts it was the best book I have ever read at at other parts it was very boring. It is also confusing at parts. I agree with the guy that said that it was like trying to install a VCR - very confusing!(Very technical) Overall it is a pretty good read and worth your time on the most part.

Summary: One of the Best of its Genre
Review: This remains one of my favorite suspense/action books. It literally had me turning pages at 5:00AM! The storyline, the technical research (which the author has made very easy for non-military types to follow), the characters are all top-notch. This is also one of the few books which translated exceptionally well to the screen. The movie which followed the book is equally outstanding. I highly recommend both!

Summary: Clancy's best?
Review: Clancy's first book is, in many respects, his best. I read it in the spring of 1991 and within the space of three months quickly devoured all six of the novels he had published. Over time as my tastes evolved, I found Clancy's characters to be one-dimensional and repetitious, and his right wing politicizing (which has gotten worse since "Sum Of All Fears") to be downright insulting. But still, "Red October" is an enjoyable book.

The plot hinges around the defection of a senior Soviet submarine captain (Ramius) commanding the newest and most advanced sub ever build by the USSR, the Red October. While Ramius' crew maneuver their way to freedom, their former comrades hunt them and the American fleet maneuvers in an attempt to facilitate the Red October's defection. Key is a CIA operative who is heading up the effort to help Ramius to freedom, Jack Ryan.

Clancy's skills as a writer become apparent here- the action is thrilling, the characters aren't. The difference between Good Guy A and Good Guy B are their names. In terms of personalities or thoughts or motives, each Good Guy character and each Bad Guy character blends into one another. Still, the plot is exciting and Clancy obviously gave a lot of thought to this story.

Enjoy.

Summary: Tom Clancy's first impressive novel
Review: Wow! This is one great start to a career! Tom Clancy is well known for this book, and also Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger. These three were made into movies, and 2 of them were very good. The Hunt for Red October is most likely the best movie of them all.

This book is about a captain who wishes to defect to the U.S.A. along with his state of the art sub, with a system that allows other subs not to hear it. When the Russians find out he wishes to defect, they send the whole fleet after him. Towards the end, the suspense climbs and climbs, and the ending is pure thrills. You'll probably love it. I have read one other book by Clancy, and that was Red Storm Rising. This book had tons of thrills and lots of suspense, but I don't know if it was as good as Red Storm. I sort of get sick of Clancy's in depth descriptions and details, but he is still a great writer. This book would be enjoyed immensely by teens and adults. If you haven't seen the movie, you'll love it even more!

Summary: Strange format, but amazing detail and story.
Review: This is my first Tom Clancy novel that I have ever read. I saw the movie of it a few times before, and loved it. When I read the book, it was strange how he formatted the switching of scenes to different places and times, but I got used to it quickly. By the middle of the book the "strange" format made sense to me and I could not think of another way of writting the book.

Although I am not "nautically-inclined", the book was filled with many acronyms that kept the book moving. The acronyms were difficult to figure out at first, but once I did, I just flew through the book.

As I read through the book, I wished that I had not seen the movie yet. I thought that because, while I was reading the book one night I began to picture what was happening and could follow along in my mind. Tom Clancy has an excellent balance of details in this novel.

Summary: TAKE THAT, YOU DIRTY COMMIES! USA! USA! USA!
Review: The Hunt For Red October is one of Clancy's most exciting novels centering on a Russian nuclear submarine captain who wants to defect to the good old USA and turn over the prototype advanced technology sub he's given to pilot for a test drive. It's all about the technical intricacies of submarine warfare, the weapons involved, the countermeasures against them, and the highly complex tactics developed on both sides of the Cold War to counter the other's. Jack Ryan, fresh off his vacation playing PATRIOT GAMES, finds himself slammed into a situation where its up to him to save the world yet again. Intense, crackling with energy, the whole thing is mad with intrigue and suspense.
