You don't know, the American Government neither. So take a glimpse into the secret world of nuclear submarines and their games of war. learn about their tactics and be thrilled. At the place were the movie ends, the tension in this books reaches another, unrevealed climax.

Review: THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER is still one of the best books ever rated. The amount of detail is astounding, and although the plot is a bit linear and it practically telegraphs what's going to happen (a flaw with all his books) very few authors can hold your attention like Clancy can

Review: This was my first ever Tom Clancy book. This is certainly a good way to start with a new aythor. The decision by the Russian commander to take the Red October to the Unites States leads to a wild seaworthy adventure. You wonder until the end of the book,"will the Red October" make it. After many close calls the good guys finally win. The Russians give a worthy chase. The Jack Ryan character makes a great debut. Buy this book,it will keep you in suspense.

Review: This is definatedly tom clancy at his best. The plot is this: A russian sub driver named marko ramius who wants to defect to the united states. The sub is named Red October that has a new silent drive system. The Russians catch on and send their fleet after him and the Americans send theirs after him. This book is a classic!

Review: "The Hunt for Red October" Tom Clancy's first book, is about a Russian submarine lead by sub master Marko Ramius. Ramius and the other leaders of the ship have plans to use the submarine to escape to the United States. To rid the ship of the original crew, Ramius orders them to evacuate because the submarine is going to explode. To complete the plan, Ramius volunteers to stay with the ship to see that the United States does not get a hold of their new submarine technology. This way Marko is seen as a true Russian while in fact he plans to become a US citizen. Clancy's use of setting is what sets this book apart from other military novels. Even without knowing anything about submarines or the military, readers can still pick up on what is happening. The book takes place not only in the Russian sub, but in American subs and ships as well. Clancy's nautical terms compliment the setting by putting the reader in the setting as part of the crew. The book is slow to start due to the nautical and military terms, but once familiar with it the book reads quite well. Most of the setting is on the Russian sub, so some Russian words and phrases are used, but they are explained. The thing I enjoyed most about the book was the realism. Clancy did a great deal of research on the subject before writing this book and it is definitely seen throughout the writing.

Summary: Probably Clancy's best!
Review: This has got to be one of, if not the, most complex book I've ever read. The movie left out a couple of sub-plots, so you can't really watch the movie and get the complete story. When you're reading, Clancy feeds you bits of information whose significance in the story you are not quite sure of. For this reason, your curiosity take over and it forces you to read more until you can figure out the missing pieces. This story is definitely great for anyone who wants a complex, riveting, suspenseful story that is as close as real as you can get without actually being inside the submarine itself. T.A.R.

Review: This book was a real thriller. It kept you turning the pages. As the first Tom Clancy novel it is very well written. It is about a defecting Soviet submarine and the race of the Soviets and Americans to get to it. Really recommend you read it. I couldn't put it down, and got it done in 3 days!
