Rating: Summary: Keeps you on edge till the very end. Review: Two nations, the United States and the Soviet Union, compete to find a rogue missle submarine. In 1988, Captain Ramius, a Soviet captain in command of the most technologically advanced Russian missle sub, disappears into the Atlantic. The United States President hires Jack Ryan to claim it for the United States, while the Russians try to blow it up. All this counts down to the final conflict. The book is overall a fairly good book, but some parts are unrealistic strategically; for example, the Russians pile all their military boats into one sea, leaving Russia one big target. The United States does the same thing. This ,however, is the only complaint. Otherwise, the author, Tom Clancy, does a great job translating the nautical terms fot those who haven't heard them. Overall, the book is very, very good and fun to read. It raises a lot of questions that are fun to think about and makes you wonder how the military works. This book is excellant.
Rating: Summary: The Hunt for my pillow... Review: My friend (anonymous) recommended that I read this. BORING! She liked all the technical stuff. YEAH! That's ALL THERE IS! I also saw the movie version and it wasn't much better. When the sub is sailing into a harbor at night, the background looks SO FAKE! Read Gorky Park instead -- wicked good russian book.
Rating: Summary: Sets THE standard for Sub books... Review: I was never really interested in submarines, nor was I ever into thriller/type novels before picking up this incredible debut. To this day, I'm still not sure if I have ever read a more impressive 1st novel by anyone. I have since become almost obsessed with subs and can't seem to get enough of them. There are any number of 'good' submarine adventure thrillers out there, however 'Red October' is still the bar by which all others are measured, and for good reason. While other novels are written by experienced former submariners, what they make up for in personal knowledge, Tom Clancy far outweighs in sheer writing talent. Setting the stage, and making you feel as though you are a part of what is going on is one of Clancy's trademarks and he has a great start in this one. There is also something to be said about someone who actually INVENTS a totally unique writing style (techno-thriller). Again, the author by which ALL other techno-thrillers are judged, Tom Clancy has written easily one of his best works first, but that isn't to say his succeeding novels are not as good, in fact I still consider 'The Sum of All Fears' to be his best book. But you gotta hand it to someone with no previous professional writing experience who hits not only a homerun on his first time at bat, he's managed to hit it half-way 'round the globe! GREAT book, and most of all, fun to read.
Rating: Summary: Jake Bergmann-The Hunt for Red October-Tom Clancy Review: The conflict involves defecting Russian submarine, which climaxes when attacked by another Russian submarine... Marko Ramius is a wise, experienced Russian submarine commander, who holds a hidden contempt for the Russian government and the Communist Party. He is recognized by high party officials as a strong and influencial party member, as well as their best submarinecommander. The theme is to fight for what you believe in. I absolutely loved this book. There is nothing I would change or add; it is the best book I have ever read.
Rating: Summary: exciting but in depth Review: This is yet another great book by Tom Clancy. This time Jack Ryan is involved in an underwater adventure that is sure to have you anxious to read on. A soviet submarine travels to the waters of the US and finds itself in a position to effectively attack. Jack Ryans guess at the scenario gets himself involved in a top secret mission dealing with a soviet commander which he had met in person. The only downfall to this book is that it is so involved with talking about submarines that unless you are interested or familiar with them, you may find it of less interest than others. Overall this is an excellent read that far surpasses the quality of the movie.
Rating: Summary: Clancy's First is Still His Best. Review: As an Avid Clancy Fan, I have read, and reread, all of his books. The Hunt For Red October is still the one that gives the most thrills and chills. The research is great, with a gripping realism that grabs, and will not let go. The Plot is tight, with enough side trips to keep it interesting, but not obscure the main action. Marko Ramius is a well fleshed character, and Jack Ryan is a man to look up to in the modern era. The book is an astounding exercise in What if?, providing such realism, that you can certainly say, it could have happend. The presentation of life aboard a submarine is also first rate, givin a glimpse into a world that most of us will never have a chance to visit. Over all, with its unencumbered plot, absolute realism, suspensful finale, and wonderful characters, The Hunt for Red October is Clancy's greatest, a great read from start to finish. A fully earned 5/5 stars.
Rating: Summary: Got me into reading Review: I never read novels until a long time ago when a friend told me to read this book. I've been reading ever since, and am at the bookstore the moment a new Clancy title is released. Wonderful descriptions and fantastic writing.
Rating: Summary: Great, Great Story Review: I picked up the Hunt for Red October shortly after the Kursk disaster, realizing that I had not read a submarine novel in almost a year. I had only seen the movie, which was good, and so had put off reading the book. I should have read it sooner. The book, as is usually the case, had greater depth, more action and more interesting and diverse character development. althought the first hundred pages are similar to the movie, the book expands and develops in an entirely different direction after that and is well worth the money spent, I read the book in a day flying from the west to east coast, and was grateful that I didn't have any interuptions. It really is a great read.
Rating: Summary: Wanting to be Free Review: I enjoyed The Hunt for Red October. It had a plot that caught my attention and made me want to read. The novel had the main plot and then other secondary things that happened because of the plot. Tom Clancy makes you want to read his books. Someof his plot twists are unexpected. Thes makes it more interesting that when you know what is going to happen. Clancy's characters jump out at you from the begining to make the novel that much more fun to read. Clancy's book is very technical but still fun to read. Some parts get to be confusing: Clancy sometimes uses special terms or abbreviations that apply to the Nfavy. Most times Clancy will explain or thr to explain so someone with no military background can still understand it. Most of the novel is a jot to read. Even the confusing sections are fun to try to figure out. Now that I have read the book, I would like to see the movie. I would like to compare them to see which one the bok or movie, is better. I think that most people who enfoy mysteries would like to read this book. Even though I read this book is probably more of a guy book. The navy and submarines are more likely something thar a guy would be more interseted in. I liked it and there are some girls who would also like this book.
Rating: Summary: Dreams of Freedom Review: Reader's Response to Novel The harsh prospect of a nuclear holocaust keeps readers of Tom Clancy's The Hunt for the Red October, glued to the pages. This novel has been well written and the sheer suspense involved coerces the reader to continue reading. The action begins as Soviet submarine Captain Marko Ramius decides that he wants to defect from Russia to America. When the American CIA ascertains this, Ramius is already halfway across the Atlantic in his stolen sub, and analyst Jack Ryan is called to the case. Can a rogue submarine captain escape from the entire Soviet Navy to gain his freedom? Unforgettable characters such as Captain Ramius and Jack Ryan force you to think about what they discuss in the book. Ramius wants his freedom and is willing to do anything to get it. Ryan has many personal boundaries that are dying to be broken so he can experience life to the fullest. After reading this book, we Americans will finally grasp the colossal freedoms that we enjoy with democracy. Also, the reader begins to cogitate what individual boundaries limit them and how best to supersede them. Stirring text and insights into the characters' own heads give the reader a need to continue reading onward. When Clancy takes the reader on a journey inside Ramius' head, the sad reality that permeates throughout the Soviet Union becomes reality. Clancy explains the hardships and the utter lack of dignity that an everyday citizen is supposed to bear. The amazing thing about the authorship of this book is that it makes the readers want to know more about the situations occurring. Somehow, the reader begins to feel emotion for the characters as they experience good times and bad. All in all, The Hunt for the Red October is a fascinating, gripping book that keeps the reader on his toes. This novel manages to examine various ideas and situations that all readers are able to apply in some way to their own lives. I highly recommend The Hunt for the Red October for anyone wishing to learn more about themselves and a little bit about nuclear submarines.
