Rating: Summary: GREAT AND GREAT!!!!!!!!!!! Review: I ordered two novels from Amazon. THE TESTAMENT AND THE FIST OFGOD, by A.T. Nicholas. Both books are super. I read them both on myvacation and was very pleased by the plots and writing styles of these two authors. This is the first novel I read by Grisham and it won't be the last.
Rating: Summary: Enjoyable but not one of his best Review: I liked this book. Very easy to read. Not alot of plot twistsor action. Doesn't keep you sitting on the edge of your seat. But alight summer read that you can finish in a few days. What I like about Grisham is that he writes interesting stories without alot of cursing by his characters. Very refreshing. More religion in this book which surprised me and pleased me to find an author not afraid to talk about Christian ideals.
Rating: Summary: insulting at the very least Review: not having read all of grishman's books, this one by far was cut and pasted together for really no apparent reason. ch. one was an excellent attention getter but the rest of the story was a mere extension, lacking depth, and real character analysis. One recommendation to grisham: please don't insult our intelligence by creating illusionary plots followed by insignificant description. Any intelligible author would have seen this coming. save your time and money.
Rating: Summary: Surprisingly pleased by a modern novelist Review: A daughter of one of my cousins repeated to me that John Grisham was her favorite writer, though she had not yet read THE TESTAMENT. I do not include many 20th century novels in my varied reading schedule, as the philosophy, the gratuitous sensualism, and the style often run counter to my beliefs and sensibilities. But I checked out reviews of the various Grisham books and was intrigued enough by reviews of the then newly published THE TESTAMENT, to purchase and read a copy. Here I found an interesting story with a moral, with a theme of Christian redemption woven within a tale that presented a variety of characters ranging from the calculating, the greedy materialist, the weak but well meaning, to the saintly. The ending was neither mushy nor despairing, but instructive.
Rating: Summary: Falls short of excellence Review: High average novel, good story line and generally well written although it was not nearly as fast paced or well written as "Whose Death in the Tunnel?" by Becker. Again a good novel, but it just falls short of excellence.
Rating: Summary: Another sermon from Rev. Grisham Review: If you thought his last book ("Street Lawyer") was just a long, boring sermon (and I did), you'll find "The Testament" more of the same. Poor Mr. Grisham has obviously gotten tired. His books are beginning to follow a pattern: opening drama, followed by several hundred pages in which nothing happens except for the sermon from Rev. Grisham. The plot in this one is so predictable that I was able to guess his surprise conclusion a hundred pages before the end of the book. And the sermon is pretty much the same as "Street Lawyer", except more heavy-handed. The man obviously wishes he were a missionary. My advice is: "go for it, John. You've ceased being a writer."
Rating: Summary: A disappointment Review: I am a John Grisham fan and this book was a great disappointment. It starts off quickly, however loses its momentum. I would not recommend wasting your time reading it.
Rating: Summary: A good summer read Review: This book was a good summer read, full of vivid descriptionsof the Pantanel and the people there, while addressing spiritualissues that often go ignored in fiction.
Rating: Summary: A little short Review: I am an absolute fan of John Grisham but this latest work of his falls short of his previous spell binding works. The TESTAMENT is only the second Grisham work (the other is A TIME TO KILL) that I was able to put down for more than a few hours and return to it with an attitude of "I guess I should finish this book up" rather than the typical "I have to finsish this!". The place setting is intresting, but the story falls short on excitement, which is what I always have attached to John Grisham novels. I am hoping the next Grisham work will return to the on-the-edge feeling of THE FIRM and THE PELICAN BRIEF. The cat-and-mouse plots which are more entertaining and exciting than anything.
Rating: Summary: I loved it. Review: I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It's amusing how different some of the reviews are toward this book. I can't understand how some people did not like it. Oh well, there's no accounting for taste!
